Putting a machine away for winter - a couple of things to make life easier in the spring.

Better late than never - I meant to do this before now, but seem to have caught things in time. I can rest assured I will have no blocked jets in the carburettors or fuel contamination in the engine / oil while the machine stands idle over the rest of winter, and I will also be able to charge the battery from time to time, if required.

Hi Paul after draining the petrol I put a litre of synthetic fuel in the tank and carbs. Keeps petrol taps suple. And fires right up in the spring.

Yes, that salt is the bane of my existence. Over the past two years, we got more salt than snow. Thanks I always enjoy your videos

Yes once a griitter appears my bikes go off the road . I do tend to put the batteries back on and start them once a month. Always have done . I also blip the throttle but no tickling nowadays unfortunately 😂

I put my 1978 T140V away about 3 weeks ago, after a good long run to get everything up to temperature. My winterisation consists of filling the fuel tank to the brim with E5, coating all the bare metal with WD40 (apart from brake discs, although that probably wouldn't make much difference on one of these) and squirting some oil in the plugholes, then turning it over to coat the bores, which I repeat once a month until spring. Battery gets charged regularly as well. My all year round bike is a 1980 Suzuki GS550. I give that the WD40 treatment as well, then wash the salt off and reapply regularly. Chain gets lubed more often in the winter, too. So far this treatment seems to have worked, and a good clean in the spring is all it needs to bring it back to its best.

G'day Paul, I'm so sorry you have to winterise all your bikes, how long is the off-road period or is that based on the weather, excuse my ignorance but l had no idea that's what you have to do and also salt on the roads what that doing to your rivers and streams when it runs off, that a good looking triple, cheers mate, Neil 🤠.

We have calcium chloride here in the states in the rust belt they also use it in the summer on dirt roads to keep the dust down I live on a dirt road so I cut thru my yard in the summer to the black top to stay off that crap

Yes that's the stuff they're putting in the salt! Also some areas add molasses to help it stick to the road, unfortunately it also sticks under your vehicles.

Yeah the salt went down last night, they put some other chemical in it too, we had a run down to Pembrey today, the road from fairfach to crosshands hadn't been salted.

I have a 1967 BSA THUNDERBOLT 650CC with ELECTRONIC IGNITION. Which is the best battery type, 9AH or 12AH ?

I removed an electronic ignition from my 1970 A65 and went back to points - there are videos of this machine discussing why. With points, as long as you have the correct voltage, that is good enough, but I suppose the greater the AH, the better provided it will fit.

Will you keep any of your bikes available for use during winter? I keep riding mine but not very often and I'm very picky about when I'll take it out (only when the road is dry and we have had rain to wash the salt away). There are roads around my way which seem never to be salted but I can't avoid the other roads.

The Trials Cub and the RE Bullet greenlaner will probably still get a run from time to time.
