Putting a Radio in the LS400!

I decided to install a radio into my 1994 Lexus LS400. I got tired of listening to the weakness of the factory pioneer system, and was able to get a dash kit and harness for a radio I already have. I have a Kenwood DPX54 from my S10 so I wanted to pop it in the Lexus. I used a Metra Dash kit, and a harness that can be found below, among them, there's a link to the guide I used to install the radio, which also has the links to a single din dash kit, and harness.
As usual, I got carried away, and decided to fix a bunch of stuff 'while I was in there.'
Thanks for watching!

That dash kit looks pretty clean.. I'm keeping the stock radio in.. and for now using a cassette adapter into the radio since there is no Bluetooth..A good cassette adapter still sounds way better than any product that plays through the FM radio.. (tried several) I saw a couple of Bluetooth mods on RU-vid & I'm figuring out if I'm capable of doing any of them myself.... yours Looks good though
@ClaytonBridges
@ClaytonBridges 4 года назад
Nice! yeah use that one in the link if you ever do. I have a cassette to auxiliary adapter, but I think it was broken. There was little to no audio on the left side of the vehicle.

@@ClaytonBridges I honestly never knew my car had 4mufflers.. this past weekend I did a rear muffler delete... They took out the back 2 mufflers & I had a pipe custom fabricated to go straight out the back..but they made it dip down a little bit so the dual exhaust will be under the bumpers and I won't have to cut the bottom of them... I just got some chrome exhaust tips and then putting it on this weekend.. so now the car has two and not for mufflers and I do hear it more. I should have posted it before and after.

Ooh, I have a 94 too, thanks for the info! Looks like yours has a couple extra features for traction control or something above the ashtray. Mine has, or rather had, a phone in it, but someone removed the phone and left the mount in place. CD changer is broken. Lovely. Jealous of the black paint, looks to be in a bit better condition than my car. Hope you are still enjoying it.

Just to clarify, I ordered a combination kit with the Metra dash kit, AND and included harness. Harness did not fit. The only issue with the dash kit was the lack of hardware, although the factory hardware worked fine for this particular radio. THE LINKS I HAVE IN THE DESCRIPTION, are exactly what ended up working for me, for the end result.

I think it should, the kit that I have linked might not be the proper one. But I cant imagine a 94 and 90 are all that different. Although there are definitely some differences with the earlier 90-92 and the 92-94 models. Its also important to know if you have the nakimichi I think. the wiring is different

Where did you get the wire diagram from
@ClaytonBridges
@ClaytonBridges Год назад
just to clarify, which wiring diagram? Its also possible I didnt use one simply because Ive done this a few times. Generally the harness that you buy matches the wire colors of the aftermarket radio, theyre pretty standard. So, on most aftermarket stereos they use the same colors, like blue for power antenna for example. Its possible to good those. as far as what the wires are on the car side.. I have no idea, thats why the harness exists, it just plugs into the plug and I trust the harness is correct.

I finally got around to doing this since I last commented but unfortunately the harness won't fit on my car because I have a 2000 ls400. I went to an audio installation place and they claim they can't do it because there's no harnesses available. They want to charge me $1,600 to replace all four speakers and the subwoofer amp as well as the head unit. I can't afford that. I only wanted to spend a few hundred for the head unit. I'll keep looking

I do not think you lexus had the Nakamichi premium sound system in it. Does anyone know if the stock sub will work with an aftermarket radio?
@ClaytonBridges
@ClaytonBridges Год назад
I dont think I did either. The stock sub will not work with an aftermarket radio, I believe it has to do with the wiring. I think theres a certain harness for it that does not fit aftermarket stuff. However I think there are ways to make it happen. I have another video of using an aftermarket sub, and as far as wiring goes, its way easier to do it that way. but the fitment is tricky and if you mount it in the rear deck you have to kind of modify stuff
@lhrdark17x92
@lhrdark17x92 Год назад
@@ClaytonBridges So essentially speaking, I will be required to buy a new radio, amp and sub, unless I want to keep everything OEM? My subwoofer went out in my currently OEM Nakamichi radio system for my 97 LS. But I am unsure if it is the sub or the amp as of yet. I wanted to put a newer entertainment unit in it though.

What cables , other than the harness did u use to connect to the speakers? I’ve connected my stereo w the harness and it powers on , I just don’t know how u would connect to the speakers from this point, because there aren’t rca cables coming from the car. There are 2 weird audio cords from the harness that are different sizes 1 standard and 1 slightly smaller. Do u connect speaker wires to the stereo some how? (Ucf 10 1993)
@lexgarcia7414

The 2 cables I mentioned come from a seperate bunch than the actual wire harness , their own bundle from the the main harness . I think they’re probably useless
@ClaytonBridges
@ClaytonBridges 3 года назад
sorry just saw this, I think I left two of the plugs undone. The speakers should be hooked up through the main harness in the radio. Id say if you hook your radio up, and turn the car on, and it works just fine, I wouldnt worry about those other two wires. I def left some things unplugged that were just part of the original sound system. Possibly the stock sub

well I don't really know what goes into getting apple carplay to work, but if the radio has it, I'm not really sure what would change... The only thing that could be diferent is the need to install extra wiring for some feature of apple carplay? But it shouldn't be a whole lot different

@@Codybaz On mine, I discovered an issue with the lumbar support on the driver's side sagging when I went to fix a bolt on the backrest hinge that had fallen out. I was able to shim behind the support that is moved by the motor with some 1/4" chipboard that I slotted in a few places to make it flexible. I also made the support wider by doing this. The max setting on the lumbar is now a little bit far for the motor (no bad noises, but you can tell the motor is working hard), so I don't move it all the way/it's uncomfortable anyway. Comfort is much better now.

I will also say, the answer to whether UCF20s and UCF10s have parts that interchange is almost always no. they share very few parts. Maybe filters. I know you can interchange coilovers, although I dont think its a great idea, they tend to be different sizes. but they are different cars for the most part
