Putting Accessories on the New John Deere X570

I've wanted to beef up the new X570 a bit and add a couple accessories to it. It's the bare-bones model in the X500 series lineup so most of them do not come standard with accessories such as a brush guard, weight bracket, or rear HDAP tires, but since I'm going to be putting a lot of hours on this tractor in the future, I wanted to add a few things to make it a little bit tougher and more useful.
While I was away at school, I purchased a Deere OEM front weight bracket to replace the original bumper on the tractor, as well as the popular X series brush guard to protect the front of the tractor from damage since I weave in and out of a lot of tight spaces with it when mowing. I also wanted to get some taillights for the tractor...unfortunately they don't come factory. I ordered a set of LED taillights from a guy named Jeff Walters who I heard about on the forums. He makes these LED light kits on the side and puts a lot of time and effort into making each one. He makes a very high-quality kit, almost looks like something Deere would offer as an add-on to their tractors.
In this video I install each of those options. Took me a good part of the evening since I've never worked on an X series tractor before. The toughest part of the process was removing and then re-installing the long tensioning bolt for the lift assist spring under the frame. Also, Deere only likes to use self-tapping screws for their parts so it took a bit of effort to thread the mounting bolts in for the weight bracket. The LED taillight kit from Jeff came with thorough instructions and was pretty easy to install once I read through them. They simply wire into the existing headlight lead and you have to replace the reflectors with the taillights and hook all the wires up. If you're interested in buying the taillight kit, send Jeff an email at jefflhs@hotmail.com.

The new X590 model has electronic fuel injection and an electronic governor that eliminates the cold start issues. I bought one last year and absolutely love it.

I work for Deere some of the newer Deere's/Kawasaki are extremely cold blooded and smoke a tad on start up others love the cold and never smoke but by far the Kawasaki's are the best engines on the market!

Those T-connectors for the wiring tie in invite corrosion. Best to add some dielectric grease to them before you snap them on. Then use liquid tape over the outside.

Good idea. I haven't had any issues with corrosion or moisture on those connectors but I will definitely use dielectric grease next time I have them apart.

That's an awesome machine I've considered a newer x500 series tractor but I decided against it since I can get a nice 430/455 for cheaper and I'm fine with doing extra maintenance. Also I love the tailights and brush guard and the weights bracket they're really nice touches all it needs now are a set of HDAP's. Hope school is going well I can't wait for gardening/mowing season I'm tired of old man winter.

A little smoke on start up is quite common on engines that the pistons move horizontally, ie a vertical shaft mower engine. One thing that helps is to be careful not to add too much oil, a little too much oil will make that much worse. I first learned about this on my BMW motorcycle (boxer engine, a flat twin.) You usually park motorcycles on the side stand, one cyl lower than the other, once in a while they would smoke like the devil when started, scared me the first time it did it. I had a Kohler on my last JD lawn tractor and it would do it almost every cold start.
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 6 лет назад
You bring up a good point. I'm used to smoke coming from my old garden tractors because they've been around a while and the piston rings are getting worn. But I was surprised to see smoke from a brand new Kawasaki engine (barely broken in for this video). I ran this machine every day in the summer and it never smoked on startup, I figured it was just a winter thing.
@G56AG
@G56AG 6 лет назад
My previous JD was an STX38, 13 hp single Kohler, smoked on almost every cold start since it was new, but it never used oil that I could tell, my current JD D130 B&S Vtwin, smokes on cold start occasionally, but I know its nothing to get excited about.

It is not normal for the older Kawasaki's to smoke or be cold blooded. That engine doesn't sound like it is running right. I have an X534 and it never smokes and it starts right up every time. Only need to choke it for a few seconds.
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 3 года назад
I said it in one of my other replies but it only acted like this for the first couple seasons. I've had 4 different machines with Kawasaki engines (new and old), and they've all acted the same way. Several friends who run Kawasaki powered equipment have had similar issues. Of course, it also depends on the climate where you live.

Have you considered adding rear wheel weights to yours? I just got my x580, and have a very steep yard, my previous mower has 3 wheel weights on each wheel and it does great on the steep parts. I haven't tried this mower yet but I'm afraid it's too light in the rear to tackle the job without spinning and tearing up the yard, especially in damp grass.
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 3 года назад
These are decently heavy units (especially in the rear end), and I haven't had much trouble with slippage on hills unless the grass is really wet. Even then, the diff lock always helps get me through the wet areas. I specifically didn't order it with aggressive tires or extra weights for that reason. I have a set of wheel weights installed on all my other garden tractors (for tillage, snow removal, etc), but I never saw the need fo extra weight with this tractor. If your X580 has the HDAP all-terrain tires, you should be fine, but if you ordered it with turf tires I would definitely recommend adding some weights to the rear end to help you on the hills.

@MichaelTJD60

I figured the smoke was normal. I thought my old Kohler starting up was a bad smoker lol. Very true. There are a lot of blue collar career paths I could have seen myself doing and still see myself doing one day. Now I see them as future hobbies. I sort of categorize people who I meet in MechE into two categories, the ones who change there own oil and the ones that don't. lol Generally the ones that do their own oil are the ones that decided on that major because the they enjoy mechanics and working on mechanical systems. While the ones that don't change there own oil do it for the money, generally can't tell the different between a ratchet and a socket. Employers want the ones that do it because they enjoy it and find interest. I toured an Caterpillar/Electro-Motive Diesel factory, during an interview. Started talking about working on engines,emissions, EPA etc while walking in the factory with a bunch of interviewees, and they were shocked. Pretty much did the interview for them, and was immediately offered a position (although I couldn't take it). And if you are a RU-vid partner, put it on your resume as a job, employers love it. Differential Equations was my lowest point, and still don't understand them to this day.

is it necessary to take the hood off for attaching the weight bracket or did you do it for clear visibility in the video? thanks
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 7 лет назад
Yes, the instructions say to remove the hood. It helps gain access to the mounting screws in the frame, plus you have to change the hood pivot bushings over from the old bumper to the new weight bracket anyway. Removing the hood is simple, just unplug the headlight harness and lift it straight up off the pivot bushings.

what series come with water cooled engine/ power steering?
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 7 лет назад
None of the X500 series are available with a liquid cooled engine anymore, you would have to jump up to an X700 series for that. But the older X520 and X540 tractors were liquid cooled. The current models with power steering are the X580, X584, and X590.

Hey I just bought a 2020 X570 and I was looking to upgrade the tires front and back. I want the same setup from the X580. Do you know if I can just get 16x6.5x8 tires and mount them on the stock wheel? Also why do you think they ran a smaller setup on the 570? Any harm running the larger set up front? Sorry for all the questions.
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 3 года назад
The smaller tires up front were most likely a cost-saving measure. The X570 shares front axle and steering components with the lighter-duty X300 series, so I guess a 16x6.50-8 tire was not deemed necessary. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to mount 16" tires on the stock rims....they are the proper width and diameter so there should be no fitment issues.

@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 7 лет назад
Yeah, but remember back in the 70's Deere and Kohler were hand in hand partners so they immediately turned to Kohler when they wanted to start using twin cylinder engines in the 300 series. The KT17 was one of Kohler's early attempts to make an opposed twin engine, so they didn't know what to expect performance-wise. So essentially the JD 317, Cub Cadet 682/782, and others were all test dummies for the new engine...and they all suffered the same fate.

Very informative video, thanks. My 14 yr. old shaft drive Cub is starting to need a lot of attention maintenance wise so I'm in the mkt. for a new tractor. The JD X570 & Cub XT3 GS are at the top of my short list and just wanted to know if yours is meeting all your expectations and how is the cutting quality of the Accel deck? I read owner posts that JD has had issues with hoods & seats seats cracking prematurely and wonder if this has been resolved with the new X series? Thanks again, RP.
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 7 лет назад
The broken hoods and seats were common problems on the older JD's from the late 90's to the mid 2000's. The plastic hoods on the X300-X500 series now seem very sturdy and are definitely higher quality plastic than what Deere used to use. The 48" Accel Deep deck cuts great in regular grass but it does leave a few uncut strips if you are mowing weeds or very tall grass with it. You just have to go slow and put the deck down lower to the ground in that case. But overall it is a very well-designed and heavy duty mower deck and seems pretty much bulletproof. I'd highly recommend the X500 series, they aren't shaft drive like the Cub, but if you don't abuse them, the belt drive systems are hard to beat.

Definitely NOT 👎🏻 a good how to video. Does fill in some blanks the beyond HORRIBLE John Deere instructions leave out. Answers the brush guard question too. You go from before to after and honestly spend more time with “Tim Taylor” babbling (ref. Home Improvement) than detailed instructing. That’s the hard facts. Thanks for filling in some mystery areas though. My background is 23 years in Navy mechanical and electronics including instruction and 27 years HVAC. I understand mechanical. Your best parts were about warning about tapping screws. Not trying to be mean but your video could be a much greater service if you put some video how to red meat between the before and after pictorial bread slices. God bless young man. 😉

I appreciate the constructive criticism, but I am not the how-to type. I've been on RU-vid for nearly 10 years and historically have not done videos that way - usually because something goes wrong on camera or the project ends up taking much longer than it's supposed to (and in more recent years, people will always comment about how I'm doing it wrong and should be doing it another way). To avoid that, I prefer to do the "show-and-tell" style of videos which you refer to as before-and-after, but it's all for good reason. I do try to provide tips or information that may be important, which I'm glad you were able to pick up on. Thanks for the comment!
@MichaelTJD60

Case in point, installing the bumper and brush guard on this tractor took much longer than originally planned as the self tapping bolts were troublesome and the linkage for the lift assist spring was giving me some trouble. Nobody would have wanted to see that in the video.
