In Des Moines, Iowa, Bernie Sanders hosted the Putting Families First Forum. "There is something profoundly wrong in this country, when the middle class continues to disappear, when people work longer hours for lower wages, when we have the highest rate of childhood poverty of any major country, and at the same time, almost all new income and wealth is going to the top 1%. Together we're going to change that."

★ About Bernie:
Bernie Sanders is a Democratic candidate for President of the United States. He is serving his second term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. Sanders previously served as mayor of Vermont’s largest city for eight years before defeating an incumbent Republican to be the sole congressperson for the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Jane and has four children and seven grandchildren.
Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents and grew up in a small, rent-controlled apartment. His father came to the United States from Poland at the age of 17 without much money or a formal education. While attending the University of Chicago, a 20-year-old Sanders led students in a multi-week sit-in to oppose segregation in off-campus housing owned by the university as a Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) officer. In August of 1963, Sanders took an overnight bus as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech firsthand at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
After graduation, Bernie moved to Vermont where he worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, he was elected as mayor of Burlington as an Independent by a mere 10 votes, shocking the city’s political establishment by defeating a six-term, local machine mayor. In 1983, Bernie was re-elected by a 21 point margin with a record amount of voter turnout. Under his administration, the city made major strides in affordable housing, progressive taxation, environmental protection, child care, women’s rights, youth programs and the arts. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the House of Representatives as the first Independent in 40 years and joined the Democratic caucus. He was re-elected for eight terms, during which he voted against the deregulation of Wall Street, the Patriot Act, and the invasion of Iraq.
In 2006, Sanders defeated the richest man in Vermont to win a seat in the U.S. Senate as an Independent. Known as a “practical and successful legislator,” Sanders served as chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where he authored and passed the most significant veteran health care reform bill in recent history. While in the Senate, Sanders has fought tirelessly for working class Americans against the influence of big money in politics. In 2010, he gave an eight-and-a-half hour filibuster-like speech on the Senate floor in opposition to extending Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy. In 2015, the Democratic leadership tapped Bernie to serve as the caucus’ ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee.
Known for his consistency on the issues, Senator Sanders has supported the working class, women, communities of color, and the LGBT community throughout his career. He is an advocate for the environment, unions, and immigrants. He voted against Keystone XL, opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, wants to expand the Voting Rights Act, and pass the Equal Rights Amendment.

Broken record here, but make sure you're registered and meet the requirements to vote in your state's primary/caucus! This is the most important point toward getting Bernie elected. We have a ton of momentum - we're leading in New Hampshire and statistically tied in Iowa (per today's poll!) - and now it's almost time to turn that momentum into votes. Keep sharing Bernie's message! #feelthebern voteforbernie.org

To all the young people in the comments please try to get your parents and older relatives to vote for Bernie. Many of them are still unaware of Bernie's efforts and are sticking to the old Clinton brand recognition. #feelthebern

Senator Bernie Sanders is the first candidate for POTUS in my lifetime (I'm now 51), that I've ever couldn't wait to vote for! To have leader that represents the people electing him instead of the establishment buying him is going to do great things for our country and this opportunity we have to fix our broken system may never come again! #Bernie2016

I want to add my congratulations to Angela, a single mother who spoke of being a full-time college student struggling with predator interest rates on a PayDay loan to see her through basic expenses. I have been there. Today I have a college degree, a good job and my children are proud of me. You made a great contribution to Bernie's Forum in Iowa. Thank you. Linda

When Bernie gave Keesha that truly sincere hug and kiss, I cried. I remember as a young single mother I had to walk away from good job opportunities and from acquiring higher education because I couldn't afford daycare. In the Northwest, WA, ID, MT, NorCAL and OR, all the logger's were disenfranchised due to the new NAFTA Trade Policies from the Clinton Adm. Our Federal Government had to step in for re-training and offering loggers employment opportunities due to protesters and activists work. That single Federal Program gave over 150,000 former-logger's a real future, instead of being left behind like the factories did from 1990s all the way to yesterday in Indiana, in the Midwest. Our congress has repeatedly turned their backs on those disenfranchised workers, their families and the communities. I believe the reason why our government has not dealt with the disenfranchised is obviously clear. The logging industry in the 1990s in the Northwest were 97% white, in contrast to the exodus in the Midwest which left behind hundreds of thousands of black workers, estimating to exceed 75% black. I'm a 58 year old white female who is standing up with Bernie and saying out loud, "I want a future we can "all" believe in." I don't vote with my uterus, I don't vote party line, I don't vote because of gender, I vote because of belief's. I agree with Bernie on 92% of his policies and less than 45% of Hillary's policies. So, yes I support Bernie! As a married woman, I was grossly insulted by Gloria Steinem insinuating I needed a date, that was why I support Bernie. And worst yet, Hillary also tooted out Madeline Albright and her insulting my intelligence with such a sexist statement, "A special place in HELL!" Don't even get me started on Madeline's Foreign Policies! Do the research! Isn't it blatantly clear to everyone that our government no longer works for the People? It's time to say, "Enough is Enough" as our rights and privileges deteriorates. Isn't it time for a real Political Revolution before the people loose it all? Go Bernie!

Phenomenal panel. A must watch for anyone. The standard has been set very high for tomorrow's Fusion forum. I don't know how the moderators could even compare to these citizens with deep civic responsibility who so deeply care about their communities. This compassion and engagement is what is missing from the mainstream media, an entity far-removed from the everyday people and particularly critical of minorities and the disenfranchised. Hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Since we don't really have debates to speak of, these are great opportunities to make up your mind or just watch Bernie kill it! Watch the Black and Brown Forum January 11 at 7pm Central Time on Fusion or RU-vid. #Bernie2016

A workers party is needed to fight for democratic socialism and this is not social democracy that Bernie Sanders thinks is socialism. Workers need a party for themselves, but to stay in social democratic thinking will not bring power to the working class. Social democracy is about taxing the rich and regulate the market economy, but not to expropriate the capitalists or build a society based on democratic control over the means of production! Europe used to be social democratic with strong labour governments. But because they were still capitalistic in political thinking, they kept capitalism alive. In the late 1980's, the ruling class used the collapse of stalinism ( called socialism or communism ) as ''proof'' that regulations and taxes for the rich, were bad for the economy. With capitalists moving jobs to China, most social democrats desperately started with neoliberal ( or neoconservative ) austerity programs, to please the ruling class. Today social democracy in Europe is as right-wing and pro-austerity as liberals and conservatives! Capitalism cannot be reformed, it must be destroyed and replaced by democratic socialism. Which is the planning of our economy by society. Not by a bureaucratic state or a ruling class of capitalists!

By fighting together, we can stop the attacks on workers, rebuild the middle class and restore balance to our economy. But we need to elect leaders who will put working families first.

This isn't the reason that makes me want to see him in office. It's just the icing on the cake. That being said if you look at all the candidates. One thing that really sticks out to me. Is how normal and regular he looks. He could be your eight grade math, history or science teacher, grandfather, the man at McDonald's getting his senior coffee, or your favorite super eccentric think out the box professor. He looks like a everyday American. The others don't, they don't look relatable. How can we put a man in office that doesn't identify with 99% of the America pple. He can't relate to us, thinks he is truly better then 99% of Americans, He's not a politician, he doesn't have a degree in political science (not that you need one)he doesn't fit the position. He feels like he can do it because he is rich. He feels he deserves it because he is rich. Regardless if he is qualified or not.
