Pythons are non-venomous snakes that use constriction to subdue their prey. They're also the longest living snakes! That's right, the anaconda might be the largest, but reticulated pythons are longer. Pythons are Old World snakes, and are considered primitive because they have two functions lungs. Most snakes only have one functioning lung (the right one, for anyone wondering). Pythons also have vestigial limbs called spurs. They might be similar to boas, but there's one key difference between boas and pythons we want to discuss in this episode. There's lots to learn about these amazing snakes!
Scientific Name: Family - Pythonidae
Range: Old World (Asia, Africa, Australia)
Size: 2-30+ feet (0.61-10+m)
Diet: rats, bats, birds, pigs, deer, antelope, and much more!
Lifespan: 30 years

Excellent video! Thanks for doing one on pythons; they are really cool snakes! 3:53 I had no idea they, being cold-blooded, were able to generate heat by shivering. That's new to me.

And also, when the python's food is finally in its stomach, nearly everything about it is broken down - and that even includes the bones!

I wonder how closely related they are to boas... Are they like the new world vultures and old world vultures, with most if not all of their similarities being convergent evolution, or are they genuinely close relatives?

From what I could find, it seems there's debate. For example, this source suggested that boas are closely related to pythons: taxondiversity.fieldofscience.com/2014/05/macrostomata.html Though here we see them separated in different ways: www.reptile-database.org/db-info/snakes.html Honestly, there's still a lot of work happening in reptile taxonomy, so I think it's not necessarily clear cut right now.

In fact boas and pythons are actually related, they are both snakes belonging to the great infraorder Henophidia, Henophidia is the most basal of all the four major snake groups the others being Scolecophidia (Threadsnakes and Blindsnakes), Mesophidia (Colubrids and Relatives), and Toxicophidia (Vipers, Elapids, and Relatives), Mesophidia and Toxicophidia are most closely related to each other and make up the clade Caenophidia, Scolecophidia is the sister group to the clade Caenophidia making up another clade known as Neophidia, thus making Henophidia the most primitive and basal.
