You already had a good subscriber count when your channel took off, and you created planty content right at the right time! The quality of your content and your personality stands out. Been here since you started!
I don't know what stands you apart from other youtubers, but I am never even remotely bored when I watch your channel so it must be just you. But, you're right in saying you are different, covered in tattoos in your pink overalls, potting a plant into a cute mushroom pot, liking Taylor swift and talking about being edgy. You're definitely one of a kind
Life has been… an experience lately and I haven’t watched much RU-vid. I started watching your channel years ago and you look so healthy and happy, plant fairy ♥️ I’m so proud of your growth 🫶🏽
I love Fern. Her vids and sweet persona have helped to hold my anchor in reality. As an American and fellow planty, meek soul, omg I need this in my.lofe right now.
One of the great reasons why I’ve been following you since the beginning is because your plants have ALWAYS been taken such great care of, and I have always felt that you enjoy/want your plants to thrive as best as they can. I’ve rarely ever seen you neglect plants which for me has been the most inspiring. There are so many creators that just buy, buy, buy and then they just die, die, die.
Youre definitely one of my favourite youtubers to watch. I actually sit and watch more so than doing chores with you 😂. I love your calm good vibes and honesty and planty care. Definitely agree the planty care is more fun to watch than the informational when you just wanna chill and have background.
Look how you have come so far, especially since your nursing days. You were authentic and your true self from the start. And are relatable and your timing was also perfect. But the retention is down to you, and I appreciate your content so much. You will evolve and your true supporters will evolve with you. And you will of course gain new followers too.. sorry for the rant.. I hope it made sense ❤
Fern, you're the best because you're so sweet and real and vulnerable, and I think that is why you're so successful! Everyone can see your beautiful soul, and they (definitely I) LOVE your realness! I look forward to your videos so much! 💚🌿
That’s why I don’t think slow growing is a bad thing. It’s like sure, want the plants to be healthy, but I try to buy my plants small enough to fit in my home, but large enough I can enjoy them as is, so if they grow at a crawl that’s fine. In fact perfect. Stay the same size! I also try to avoid the larger leaf plants.
I don't think counting the number of plants you have is the issue. Organizing and displaying them as living art according to the space you have is what matters. Some people collect things like ceramic bunnies or china plates and fill their homes with them. When organized it looks great. Imagine cleaning hundreds of ceramic bunnies. At the end, its what makes you happy!!! BTW love the mushroom pot 💚🍄Hope you use the doll head pot during spooky season!!!👻
I definitely agree with you, 100-120 plants is the sweet spot. Enough variety to never get bored and to have constant growth and changes but not so many that you get overwhelmed!
I started watching you years ago when you had way less followers, and only started to comment and interacting with your videos recently, and all I can say is that you always was yourself, honest and authentic ✨ that’s why we are here !!
29:27 I agree so much! I find that the majority of plant channels are focused on showing like in depth videos on a certain plant or "plant clinic" videos how to save your plant etc. In my opinions, if you have been a plantperson for a few years you usually dont want/need that content as much and i love just hanging out with you and the mix of plant and lifestyle vlogg concept so much more❤
I was so relating to you when you said thrips were the hardest. Like I be telling everyone!! They think they aren’t that hard but they are foul, they will come back when you least expect it!
Just wanted to comment and say that I appreciate these videos. The longer the better I love every second. I always play them as I do my college classwork because it’s relaxing and feels nice to watch you do what you’re extremely good at!!!❤
Oh Fern! Like your plants, we humans go up and down. You are such an inspiration for this old girl.. I enjoy your videos (both channels) and you're a highlite in my week. Kisses to Olive 🐶💟
My hoya compacta (both cuttings) came with mealies when I first bought them almost 2 years ago 😂 I had no other Hoyas at the time, and only a dozen other plants, so that was a nice welcome to the world of buying plants online and to mealies 😂
100 ish is good and manageable! I went from 120 ish to 60-70 ish and room for more which is a nice feeling ! But spread out throughout the house it feels less overwhelming and spread out for pest pressures. Not as jungle vibes - and watering in sections/areas of the house is a tip I got from you so thanks for that! But it is hard to choose which plants to keep or get rid of ! (In my case thrips outbreak and not wanting to deal/treat so was easier to downsize) good luck! 😅
It will never cease to amaze me that two of the most finicky philodendron (melano and verru) created one of the most hardy and quick to size up hybrids 😂 I love my Splendid!
I have at least 400 lols but I grow orchids mostly. They grow slow and are way easier to maintain at a reasonable size. I based my indoor collection on the orchids the houseplants actually require more energy.
This was an awesome video as usual but I actually put you in a tripod and we out to the greenhouse and put you on speaker and repotted with you. Plant chores are hard right now in Texas because it is currently 115-120 degrees f in the greenhouse. I have the mister fan on high and it only came down to 96. I call it my Sauna. So excited that you are feeling the Hoya more now. They are still my passion!!!
I have right about 150 and I acquired most of them pretty quickly once I got into the hobby, like you were saying I got all these little baby plants and had dozens of plants on each shelf and as they’re growing, it has definitely become more and more challenging. I’m getting a little more picky, Passed some along, but I’ll also brought some new ones in lol. As I found your channel and then started watching your older stuff I think I’m finally starting to get it and working on really working on curating a collection, giving them their best possible care and kind of thinking through what plants gonna need in the future 8:34 so I appreciate you answering this question and going into detail about why
I think the number depends on a lot of other factors. I have about 150 plus props and it seems manageable. Bigger pots/plants require less frequent watering. Plus good cover pots or deep saucers allows for more watering in place. Things like that. But a pest outbreak gets overwhelming quickly. I don’t think I’ll go much more than 150, mostly due to lack of space!
My Cuprea would grow a leaf, and drop one, only ever had at the most 3 small leaves. UNTIL.. I put sphagnum moss on top of the soil.. NOW SHES EXPLODING with tons of huge leaves!! Looking closer to Jan’s from SPG! Got my Jaklyn on semi hydro, she went dormant when I switched her from soil, but she’s popped back up this spring with 4 lil leaves! I’m PRAYING it gets as big as yours You’ve got the most beautiful lips naturally ❤ no shade to those who do that stuff, imma age naturally and love myself as is
Give yourself some credit girl! Your channel is doing good because you are consistently putting out great content and you work very hard. You have such a nice personality and your videos are always putting me in a good mood. I know I'm not the only one. 🤓 Also, am I too late for the giveaway!? I'm in QC and would LOVE an Anthurium BAKERI! 💚🪴 My current favorite plant is the Hoya Wayetii Variegated. Mine is growing so fast and has so many all-pink leaves. Still waiting for my first flowers! 🌸 I don't have an Instagram however. 😑
I totally feel the "growing pains" of a large collection! I love that my babies have grown up but let's just say I'm selling most of my greenhouse cabinets because nothing fits lol. I have just around 200 in my collection 🥹
I found your channel resently, and I think it's one of the best actually. I love that you stay positive, and you seem so sweet as a person 😊 please stay that way, there's enough negative plant influences 🫣 On my bad pain days, you still make me smile ☺️ Your collection is much like mine, I like the style and variety of plants 🌿💚 About the number of plants, - I have around 100 plants, and think that's more than enough for my space. Maybe it's about how we develop and learn more, then we want to downsize and concentrate on some of them grow large & healthy? I don't really know. I still get a bit overly excited when I see a wishlist plant though 😂😂😂❤
I discovered your channel back in 2020 when I got into plants. Your videos offered a lot of comfort at the time and through the years I unfortunately killed a lot of my plants, okay MOST of my plants, through depression but I’m going through a divorce and starting over and I’m really excited to get back into it again and your videos have really inspired me to pick it up again 😊🌿
Melanochrysum is a challenge. "Sheffield Made Plants", another plant youtuber, refers to it as Melanocrisis 😅. Just wondering, if I view a video twice, is that considered "1 view" or "2 views" in RU-vid world? Since it's just the same person watching twice, does youtube just flag it as 1 view?
I'm pretty sure you answered some of my questions!! these were mine: How many plant trades have you done? Have you ever met another plant parent in person? Do you have any jobs other than being a youtuber? thank you so much! 😄🥰 I also love the name Greta for your first plant!!
Hi Fern, I wanted to know how the philodendron mamei is doing you planted in leca. I'm thinking about moving my plants to leca and your DIY pon. I love your channel. 😊😊😊
I do okay with 100+ plants. What I struggle with are all the propagations when my plants get too big. It also sucks a lot of people can't spend money on plants rn. Selling decent sized props/plants for $5-$10 and no ones buying them.
CONTEST entry!!! My fave plant is my mon thai con. Jist like you and yours we gave been on a long journey @thebareboys Would be so so so honored to care for one of your plants ❤ ive been a viewer for so long and adore you ❤❤❤ plus we are almost neighbors (love from Nelson, BC)
I will say to ALL PLANT ENTHUSIASTS, dont count your collection, just make it manageable to you. You dont want to have too much/ too little, just enough for you to be able to thrive as plant parents.
i relate so much to always being behind on one thing of all the things we have to do - and the feeling of having to film everything! i'm so bad with vlogging cos i start doing something planty then realise after that i was supposed to vlog that. thank you for sharing and making this weird cool job feel less alone!
Hi Fern! Both your channels have such cozy vibes! Love them both 🩷 my favorite plant right now is one of my epiphyllum just because it bloomed for the second time this morning! But my miltonia sunset is also blooming and such an easy rewarding orchid! So hard to choose! 😂 take care and thank you for sharing 🌿
My take on large collections: as long as you are happy, comfortable and satisfied and your collection isn’t too overwhelming or stressful, then have as many as you possibly want and are able to care for. When your collection is no longer a source of joy, you may need to change things.
I love buying new pots and finding a new home for my plants. But after doing it I recommend potting them into clear plastic plant pots and then putting them into a pretty pot. It helps to keep an eye on them better
Sorry for all the paragraphs! The longer the video the more I comment! SORRY LOL I never cared to get married either, too much work, it’s costs to get a divorce if it doesn’t work yada yada , my husband and our families wanted it for us so I gave in, we got married on a Hawaiian holiday just to e two of us, last November, people are still waiting for our reception we promised last spring lol. I feel thrilled about it now all official finally lol
Fern I love watching your videos because you are so down to earth and are such pure joy to watch and you just give me a realistic vibe I love when you upload and even though my 24 plants overwhelm me sometimes your plant collection total is my goal. Omg I have 2 windows and I had to really tell myself I can’t really rely on natural sunlight so I have multiple grow lights now and I’m definitely seeing growth in my monstera plants…I definitely prefer quality of plants rather than quantity..I just brought a Monstera Thai seedling and it rotted so bad I’m super sad I spent $30 on it and now I’m left with just a node 😢…
Contest entry🎉 My current favourite plant (it changes quite often) is my alocasia black velvet. I generally don't mind much if my plants dont have perfect leaves, but my black velvet is just putting out absolutely perfect leaf after perfect leaf. She draws my eye everytime im in the room. It would be an absolute honor to have one of your bakeri 💚💚💚
I think all plant enthusiasts go through the same process. They over buy, figure out what they enjoy, and then allow their collection to shrink naturally. It’s expensive and frustrating, but you couldn’t call it a hobby if it wasn’t 😅
Happy Manilas Pride here! Idk if this is correct but it’s what I do: It’s in a very, *very* bright room, floor to ceiling east-facing windows-but it’s like 10 feet away from a window. When I water it, I don’t drench it, but I water a bit more often. It’s not super root bound right now, so lots of room for roots to be growing. Fertilize every once in a while. Millennial Plant Dad in Nigeria has so many aglaonema and seems to have cracked the code.
Eeek! Been waiting for the Chinghungensis repot into that darling mushroom!!! That doll head planter is right up my alley!! I need one! I love creepy stuff!! My comfort zone is about 100 plants too, I did that, too many starters that grew! Who knew! lol I’ve purged quite a bit and my tastes have changed, and I’m not going cra cra trying to find the next great thing, unfortunately I have about 150 inside, and another 50 outside for the summer… what I’ll do for winter when they all have to come in? Sigh… Your rings and traditional or neo traditional tatts speak to me of old school biker aesthetic, love it. I agree with the statement maybe peeps wanna see how you grew a huge more common plant than seeing tons of new rare variegated anthurium babies. I B.C. wanna know the care you provided to get mine that luscious and big.
I agree with your take on the plant community and the preference to buy plants and buy bigger versions when they want an upgrade. There’s little to no focus on the cultivation side of the plnt hobvy
I think about 70-80 plants maximum, is a good number, at least for me. I don't have large plants, mostly succulents and cactus. I like a variety of small interesting plants. Also have started using MOLLY's Cactus and succulent mix, thanks to you. :) I and my plants love that mix. I will be downsizing a lot of some types of plants, that I have propped. Probably 15 at least will be going. Too many plants is not fun to me.
My SOH is one of my favorite plants. Two years ago I moved from a townhouse where it lived in a west window and ~THRIVED~ to a basement apartment where it only gets light from grow lights and it just hasn’t been the same which makes me so sad. A VSOH is still top of my wishlist.
My mix is now Molly’s Aroid Mix, Tree Fern and Bonsai Jack Grit mix and it’s fabulous. Thanks for sharing Molly’s I think it works great. Always enjoy your videos!
The whole video I was concerned that because of answering our questions you did less than usual. It was so sweet to pay so much attention to each question ❤
Totaally agree with watching the same plants grow. How you do get them to grow and what issues you have with them. I still have a string of hearts and love them!!
Yay another video just in time for my lunch break😊. I really like the question on which plant would you control for 24 hours, very creative. I would be curious, if you were to create a plant hybrid what two plants would you use and what would you name it?
This fun, I finished watching it in parts. This q&a is so cozy. I love when you mentioned melanochrysum, it makes me think of how Sheffield Plants calls them melano*crisis*.
I’ve got in the 60’s. It’s perfect for me. I don’t propagate. I just grow them. I haven’t bought anything in about 6 months but I’m ready to buy again. Hoyas!!
