Hi Hans, I work in the area of signal/image processing and fully agree with your comments. As your video is short, I would add that up sampling should include increased bit depth (16>24 bits) in addition to frequency. This allows for smoother sample interpolation and filtering for lower distortion and minimize analog output filtering.

Try non-integer upsampling. With the Allo Boss with PCM5122, upsampling to 32/384 turns off oversampling filters. This sounds significantly better than upsampling to 32/352.8 to my ear. The sound quality in your system to your ears is all that matters. Don't limit yourself to rules of thumb such as "only perform integer upsampling".

Appreciate this episode. I now feel I understand upsampling conceptually enough to try it.

What do you think about upsampling to DSD to a DSD Direct capable DAC? Seemingly, this would put the onus of the DAC on the quality of the output stage & the (low pass) filter applied.

What about up sampling PCM to DSD using Audirvana on a Mac? Is it a good practice

Depends if your DAC is PCM or or can support DSD. If your output DAC is PCM, it would not be useful to convert to DSD and then back to PCM.

If your DAC can support DSD Direct, then yes. You'll need to check the DAC manual but often this mode will disable volume control when a DSD stream is detected. Keep in mind the size of DSD64128+ is quite large so you'll have to factor in your connection (eg USB, coax, i2s, etc)

@@brain_segfault the DAC is DSD capable as I play DSD128 files. My real question was the benefit of converting PCM to DSD? How does the reconstruction filter process conversion and whether it adds extra information?

@@varun.b3 there's no need to convert pcm back to dsd. Everytime you switch from one format to the other you have a quality loss, whether it is perceivable or not.

Hello Hans. Again great video and info. My DAC up samples in the DSD domain. How is this different from conventional up sampling?

Great as always. Perhaps i missed this but is up sampling the same or similar to over sampling? Thank you.

There are those that claim there is a difference. For me it’s the same.

My Cambridge CXN v1 up samples by default (and I don’t think that can be turned off). I use CXN with a denafrips Ares 2 DAC in O/s mode. What is the difference between upsampling and oversampling in this case, and is OS or NOS theoretically at least, the better setting on the DAC? I generally leave the DAC in OS with slow filter. Thank you

I notice inmediately when my audio interface Behringer UMC204HD is working at 192Kh/24bits and when some software make it down to 48Khz/24bits, even on a miserable 192kbps mp3 file, I notice the difference, the sound is much clear and "open" if you like.

Hello Hans, Is it practical to up sample a file to 176.4 which had been up sampled to 88.2 already?
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 3 года назад
I wouldn't do it but with a poor DAC it might help the reconstruction filter do its work with a little more ease. The signal as such doesn't get better when upsampling.

Hello Hans. I am writing to you from Sri Lanka. I use my Lap Top Computer to up sample my CDs at 24 bits / 96 kHz. As the up sampling is done using a computer, does the sampling rates (88.2 and 96) make any difference? I really enjoy and learn a lot watching you Videos.
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 3 года назад
You always should do upsampling at an integer rate. So 44.1 kHz to 88.2 and 48 kHz to 96 kHz.
