Great video as always. if you want a flat hammock check out Amok they make an XL. The devils river is the best cant wait to go back, paddled with my dad from gruene past 35 yesterday he loved it.
Hey buddy how's it going. Man I can't wait to see your next adventure. Your kayak camping trips are so awesome man I just love watching them man. I really would love to do one of those trips with you & I know all 6 of my boys would love to do it too. My job switch my days off to weekends off so I can have activity fun with my family. So I'm looking forward to get out on the kayak a lochmoor this year. Good Q&A video man. Take it easy buddy.
Let me know if you ever plan to check out Missouri rivers. I've only done one Kayak camping trip here on the current river and found the most amazing hammock spot. The caves really make it worth the trip
I start making a list of what's going with me several days before I leave. Ei: Kayak seat, kayak (yes, even the obvious), tweezers, 7 MREs, water filter, etc. Then, when it goes in a dry bag, I mark it off. Or if not in a dry bag, it gets marked off when it actually makes it IN THE TRUCK. I'll grab ONE THING AT A TIME, then mark it off before I grab the next thing. Not having enough food or having to use a dry bag as a makeshift kayak seat SUUUUUCKS. Forgetting something vital is too easy for me to do, so I am quite exacting when packing and transporting.
I always recommend shuttling with buddies or an outfitter. Boomerang trips are a last ditch effort in my opinion. However, they’re better than not going at all!
Okay so you said the Guadalupe river was 50 or higher what about the Frio or Llano? Also keep up the great work! Started watching your videos in 2020 right before I kayaked the Brazos river. Best kayak RU-vidr out there!
I've been dreaming of a trip to the Devils river as well. All the reasearch I've done suggest just hiring an outfitter to shuttle your group back to your vehicle. Any thoughts on where to start and takeout on a 3 day trip? Our group usually shuttles ourself.
Haha! Preesh brotha, funny enough I play a lot of basketball at work but my back was bothering me so I stuck to lifting. Guess that focus on weights instead of basketball was good! Lol
Has the zip dry back pack and the waist pack been discontinued? I just ordered the roll down but the zip one I’ve been seeing in older videos looks awesome! Love your content!
Great question! So the design as you knew it has been discontinued. BUT it’s under redevelopment for release in 2024. It’ll look different but really working to boost functionality and build on the original offering. That original is still great but having fun working on the next generation of products
@@GatewoodBrown I will be here when it drops! Feel free to reach out if you are ever in NC and want to tag along on the river kayak trips, we camp and do a ton of Day trips, also I noticed you downsized to the sportsman 106 on the devils , what were your pros and cons the the smaller size. I have the 120 and love it but always wondered if the 106 navigates better in fast water, thanks !
Not just the rivers but the big lakes as well. I have 4 sea kayaks just about ready for the water, based in Michigan's Keweenaw. Plan a trip up here and I will help get you on the water.
I just got back from trip on the Buffalo River. Did Ponca to Woolum. It was an amazing trip. Last year I did the Penobscot, but it was different section than you did. I was up in Lobster Lake area.
Have you thought about doing a review on the H10? I’ve seen a fair amount of reviews but I think you have more overall experience with it and would be interested in hearing your thoughts.
Yes! I’ve been meaning to for years and I’d like to get one out soon. I can sum it up for ya though, excellent for calm water gear hauling and short adventures. But for most everything else on the river I recommend a sit on top
@@GatewoodBrown I appreciate the response. I’m here in central Texas so it’ll mostly be lake fishing and river camping/fishing. As you know the rivers here don’t get too crazy lol. I like the function of the sit on top but the storage is not comparable against say the h10.
Iowa isn't much more friendly even than Oklahoma. Most rivers in Iowa are considered private property. You are fine ON the water but, even the river bed under the water is considered private land unless your in an area that is actually owned by the state or county. To get on a river that has public land you have to find one large enough to be able to be navigated by commercial traffic. Then you have to stay below the tree line to not be trespassing.
That’s unfortunate for sure. I’m unfamiliar with Iowa for the most part. Do you all have a lot of public land to explore via river? We are mostly all private in Texas as well
Funny you out this out today! I just re-watched every video you’ve put out today and then found this. Your videos are far and away the best out there. QUALITY! Kinda makes it hard to watch anyone else’s. Your tips are always spot on. Your front leash (dog leash) actually saved my ass. I was on a solo overnight on the Arkansas and got in to some braided sections. I was using a leash (Mine is long and runs back into the cockpit of my Old Town Loon 120). I got into some fast moving, skinny water and grounded. I got up and stepped out of the boat and my leg immediately sunk up above the knee in what I would describe as “quick mud”. Of course I lost my balance and fell-sinking both legs up to mid thigh in sucking mud. I had grabbed the leash as I stepped out-which kept the boat from floating out of my reach and stranding me. Not able to move or maneuver out, I pulled the boat back to me, leaned on to it, and used it as a fulcrum to pull myself out of that mud. This river is not traveled. I was in the middle of nowhere. My phone was in the dry compartment (stupidly). Long story short-your leash tip saved my ass. I would have played HELL getting out that day. So your tips may help more than you’ll ever know. Thanks for all you do. You keep me stoked man! Stay safe and all the best to you, Mr. Brown. Clonts
Curt that is a riveting story! Unfortunate that you came across that situation but I’m glad you had the tools to get out of it safely and efficiently. It’s always wild to hear stories of the tips on action. Glad you’re all good!
It proves the point that anything can happen and it’s best to be prepared-/as best as one can be. It’s an amazing sport that I Wouldn’t trade for anything. It has changed and enhanced my life. Thank God spring and summer are here! All the best
Hey Jason! Man definitely excited for your trip videos! We watched the derby and we’re in disbelief just like the everyone. Such a wild story!! Take care brother!
Your videos also bring this kayak community together. I live in San Antonio area and everyone I meet has YOU in common. We all watch your videos and it’s a great ice breaker when meeting fellow camping kayakers. Bravo sir. Ps - I don’t have any other social media so RU-vid is key for me. 🔥
@@parttimeyoutube your comment just made my day for real! One day I’d like to meet all of y’all for a paddle. The SATX paddling scene sounds like it’s alive and well. After all, your city is the gatekeeper of all these amazing rivers
@@GatewoodBrown mostly paddling. I’ve watched about everything I can find. Between you and Pete, y’all got the best videos as far as kayaking goes. I’ve been through both of your libraries multiple times…
@@WVWes thanks man! There’s a bunch of Canadian canoe campers that are enjoyable. Explore the Backcountry is a smaller lesser known one but the usual big timers will show up in search. A good way to discover new paddlers is to look at specific rivers and who’s making trip videos about them. PaddleTV is good for more TV show style videos and kayak reviews. Pete recently collab’d with him!
Haha indeed! It’s a solid name, need to get my Keaton out on a kayak. He’s steadfast at watching the videos but I know he’d have a blast on the water too
I want to do the brazos from whitney down. Seems like it would be a good river for you to do. Easy planning and you can try the whole shuttle service thing. Bottom line you could also have the free time to make a great editable video on that river.
Even though you aren't planning to get into actual whitewater, I enjoy when you and your crew hit the rapids in the boats you have! you guys seem to have a blast!
@@GatewoodBrown no problem! I just thought it was a common sense question cause everyone in this sport/hobby wants to know where their friends are gonna be paddling during the season and what kind of adventures await.
Great content GW! on our Devils trip last month our shuttle driver shared that the best chance at good water on the Devils is the fall. Shoot for a October/November time frame and you'll hopefully get a better float than we did. Not that I'm complaining. It was still incredible. I'm already planning to do the second half, San Pedro Point to Pafford's, in the fall. The 1 mph rule of thumb for Texas rivers is a good one.
Man fall is my favorite time to paddle so that will be a perfect line up! Yeah 1mph doesn’t sound much but when you add in headwinds, dragging and breaks your trip can extend quickly
@@GatewoodBrown Yesssir! And another piece of advice: start your planning now. Get your river permits and shuttle service logistics locked in. Give me a call if you have any questions. -Jack G
Both seem like legendary places. May have to do the Buffalo instead since hill country is in a drought. I want my first time down the devils to be frothy haha. It’s doable right now but really hoping for rain
Hey Gatewood! I was just down in Arkansas, was going to run the buffalo for a few days but opted for the Kings River. Less people and beautiful water. Maybe not the scenery as the upper Buff but great anyways.
Hey IM! I’m unfamiliar with the kings but I’ll map it out tomorrow and do some research. I’m a sucker for good clean water so sounds like my kind of place
@@GatewoodBrown All that Ozark water seems good. I recently did a day trip on the Current out of Two Rivers CG in MO. Super clear water with fantastic flow. My hull unintentionally touched bottom only once in 12 miles and didn't even slow down- definitely not the Texas Hill Country! There WILL be a group yakpacking run on one or more rivers in that area in my near future.
@@GatewoodBrown sadly none is coming for new Mexico but I guess this fire made international in a way. it's bad not gonna joke about it but every state sent fire fighters here in new Mexico for help at least
