Oh I LOVE Left to Tell, it is life changing. I think of her often, and got to meet her 14 years ago at a conference. She is a force. I hope others here will consider reading this book. It is hard material but it is a powerful example of Jesus and Gods ultimate power and love to hold us, sustain us and never leave us. I hope it is a movie someday, if not already.

My motto has always been "pay yourself first". Set your monthly goal and have your bank transfer the amount every month to a savings account,, easy when just after you get paid. You will adjust to the lower available funds quickly. But when we wait to see if we have it to save when all else is done?? You never will ! Pay yourself 1st!!

Reading with your kids out loud or even to your husband/wife - out loud. It's almost a lost art. How powerful is the human voice. It doesn't have to be a serious book (though that's a great way to have family discussion of tough subjects), it can just be a funny book and then you share joy together.

Solo is ABSOLUTELY correct. When we decided to buy our 1st house we set the whole family down and had a a meeting. We all agreed that extras are out for a year in order to save for the house. Movies, fast food, etc. Remember your 1st home won't look like a HGTV house, those people typically are couple with years in their careers, lots don't have kids, and/or their 2nd home. There are free programs that can tell you what you can afford. Knowing your debt to income ratio is KEY! Because it's a time waster to look at a $250,000 when you can comfortably only afford a $175,000 house. Stay in faith. Stay in prayer.

I love the analogy you gave about not giving kids a bigger suitcase than they can carry, and trying to just answer the question they are asking! One certainty with kids everywhere is that if they don't feel satisfied with the answer they received they will ask follow up questions! so answer the question and allow them to ask more if needed, which helps create great dialogues with your kids and see what they are thinking about rather than what you think they want to know. If I could add onto the person's question about how to save money without cutting back, I'd say you guys do some great things like shopping consignment for clothes, stocking up when there are. sales, and doing pantry clean outs from time to time- all of those things are great ideas that people may not consider as big savings, but they can really make a difference! thanks for all the great advice, cheers from Canada!

I would ask Solo though this question because many people don’t agree with paying cash for everything and getting rid of all credit because you need credit to be able to get a car loan or house loan. I know people whom never had a bank account and they cannot buy a house, even in today’s day with how cheap things are because they have no credit. They did pay cash for their vehicles but if one does and they absolutely had to get a replacement they wouldn’t be able to get a loan to get one and then she couldn’t work and wouldn’t be able to save to buy one. This can be a catch 22. My parents always told me, get 2 credit cards; 1 to use and pay off every month and a second for emergencies but don’t use it regularly. Solo what are your thoughts?!

We have utilised so many of your money saving ideas over the years. In Australia at least, other things to consider are checking your electricity and gas plans. So often you can move to a cheaper plan and save many dollars over the year. Also rethink your phone and internet plan. Food shopping with a list and a menu plan always helps keep costs down. Like you, we never had any debt other that our mortgage. Any purchases put on a credit card were always paid off at the end of the month so as not to incur interest charges. We simply went without things, but our family were always fed, clothed and warm....and very happy. Now they are happy, loving and compassionate adults. Love listening to your ideas on love, life and human interactions.

My response is for Tristan regarding saving. When our children were young and would receive money as a gift, we would put it into a savings account. Then we would give them the dollar amount of their age so they could spend a little. So if my son received $20 for his fifth birthday, he would put $15 in the bank and had $5 to spend. Also, when they were little we paid the tax for them. So if he picked out a toy that cost $4.99, he'd give us the $5 and we'd pay the tax. However, as they got older we taught them about tax and they'd have to pay the full cost of their purchases. They really learned the value of money when they were using their own cash. Thought this idea might help your family start saving here and there. It really adds up over time.

I think an important item to check into if you are not married “legally “. I learned that my Mum was unable to collect survivor benefits because they didn’t register their common law relationship with their state. Had they registered things would be different. Thankfully, this was not a huge issue for her but it sure would be helpful to people with less work experience and small children.

For Amisha, if you have any blood plasma donation centers in your area, and if you qualify to donate, you can be paid for your time in donating blood plasma. It probably wouldn't take more than a couple of months of donating blood plasma to earn the $600 needed to pay off your school debt. Also, sell things, walk dogs, clean houses, wash windows, detail cars, babysit, and so on. Any of those things can earn you some money.

Potty training advice from me (I had 3 under 3 at one point) wait until summer. Less clothes on and some do naked- I didn’t. My middle guy was 22 months fully trained, oldest 2 and 3 months and youngest daughter the same! Winter is hard w excessive clothing and accidents. And so sorry for the loss of your husband.! I lost mine 5-2016. You can do this girl!!

@@rondalavon7584 things get easier because you learn how to cope better, not because the pain eases ! Hang in there! Good luck!

Bookreading! I live on the other side of the world from my grandchildren. My son and daughter each have two school age children and live less than an hour away from each other. We have always done weekly Skype times with them but sometimes kids see it as a chore to talk to the grandparents, they want to play! So we do the Skype during suppertime because they are already at the table. And I read books to them. We have read many, many books. Now we are reading longer books and when the book is finally finished the two families get together and watch the movie adaptation of it together. We did Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlotte's Web, and we just finished Wizard of Oz. Everyone loves this. I do, the kids do and their parents do. I can see continuing it even when they get older.
