Our guest is Stanley Crouch, a regular columnist for the New York News and the author of over ten books on jazz and culture. Program from Sunday, April 18, 2010.
I am really going to miss this man's mind. Knew him from my former life in NYC when he and my old colleague Playthel Benjamin sat down and debated the role of Caribbean Americans in American electoral politics. Stanley just did not care what anyone thought. He just spoke his mind. Simple.
I was living in Lawrence, Kansas in the late 1970's and subscribed to the Village Voice primarily to read Mr. Crouch's reviews and opinions. I wish him and his family peace. My sincere sympathies.
The great Stanley Crouch "telling it like it is" as usual. An independent thinker with a STRONG appreciation and value of quality. If he were a young guy, more people would listen to what he has to say with an open mind but unfortunately in 21st century America, if you're old and NOT radically to the left, your ideas will just be viewed as "old fashioned" and not worthy of consideration. I'm not saying I agree with all of his opinions, but he's certainly more "on track" than any other writer or intellectual that I know of.
+Austin Casey He's an out of touch hack. The guy has a long history of sucker punching homosexuals and was fired from the Village Voice for trying to kill a co-worker.
Belatedly, I have come to consider Mr. Crouch a leader and a man of real integrity. Life may not have been always been kind. But he did what he thought was right. And he loved people and culture.
Stanley Crouch was a very bright intellectual whether one agreed with his views or not, but one thing is true and that is he was very interesting to listen too
though strongly opinionated in regards to politics, he doesn't seem to put himself out as an authority, hence he doesn't offend me. he is quite erudite in the matters of american classical music, jazz. and i dont always agree with him there, but his voracity for the subject is quite commendable.
Q:Stanley,is it true that you failed as a jazz Drummer?and that this epic fail led to the "chip on your shoulder"???A:Ill.kill the muthuhfuckuh who said that!!Q:And,Stanley is it true your nickname is Uncle Chip Ruckus???A:Cat gets stanleys tongue.Q:Someone proposed that you be made to listen to all piano genius Bill Evans CD's over n over until youre cured.Do you feel.that might solve your problem...Lol...lol...lol....lol..bwahahaha...hehehe.... .
I like Stanley Crouch but I would have enjoyed this interview more if the focus had been less on politics and more on jazz -- something he's actually knowledgeable about.
