I got an exclusive opportunity to sit down with members of the Frost Giant team and ask questions about Snowplay, the upcoming map editor for Stormgate. Snowplay will eventually be released after the early access launch for the community to bring their own ideas to life.

Maybe many doesn't like graphical or storyline design, but I think that providing powerful WorldEdit-like editor can cover those issues with ease.

The best assets we had in Warcraft 3 were all custom assets. Was always fun seeing high poly quality models next to low poly WC3 models.

Thank you for showing us this Jay. looking forward to see what the third faction will be. I don´t know how I feel about the editor yet. Perhaps when I get my hands on it, it will make more sense to me.

So Scourge of Lordaeron in Stormgate for Maporino 2025 then ? Imagining new genres spawning from custom maps for this game seems a bit optimistic at the moment. The editor will be succesful only if the game is, so we'll see

Being able to create skills that can automatically fire is going to be a huge step for creating easy / low level AI. As well as making it much easier to create damage (formulae) right in the skills instead of Duy shenanigans or 99% of skills being just summoning units like in pre-EUD SCRM.

I really hope they give us access to an actual programming language. Although I learned how to program in WC3 world editor, I was happy to move out of GUI triggers as quickly as possible haha

Not much new from a StarCraft 2 creator's perspective. 14:40 It looks like virtually the same workflow as in StarCraft 2, so despite their comments it doesn't seem like it'll be an improvement. 17:47 From what they showed, I get the impression you can only have 1 tileset per map. I suspect they mis-understood Jay and he's too polite to correct or press on it, but it sounds like he was asking if you could have multiple sets of tilesets in a single area. In StarCraft 2 you can at least have "chunks" of tilesets in the terrain editor. It wasn't as flexible as it could be, but it looks more flexible than this, so this looks like a tentative downgrade. 34:16 Glad to hear they'll support some form of collaboration, but again they're describing how the StarCraft 2's format already virtually works. If the triggers could be exported and worked on externally and safely, it could be a reasonable improvement over StarCraft 2, but as it stands they haven't specified. 43:40 It sounds like they're describing dependencies. It would be pretty neat if they expanded on libraries and made them more easily shared between maps. Those are pretty poorly implemented in StarCraft 2 when it comes to updating them outside of the context of dependencies. 47:30 Between the Data Explorer and Data Navigator, StarCraft 2 did have this functionality. There were times where it failed to visually link some lesser-used fields with an ability. Hopefully it'll be an improvement. And who knows, maybe it being as "in your face" will help less experienced creators. I acknowledge that this is still in development, but so far, I'm not super optimistic about this being much of an improvement over what we have. I hope they'll take feedback and improve. I also hope they'll be more willing to iterate on the technology than Blizzard was, since we really didn't receive a lot of updates over the years, and what we did mostly came across as half-baked.

You’ll have more power and usability from UE5 than how cumbersome and trash the galaxy editor was. There will be blueprint and coding ways to get around limitations and gaps of Snowplay.

@@SycosenMerihem I am concerned that SnowPlay will be even more cumbersome, since it seems to be built into the game and all. I'll have to see how the UE5 aspects tie in. Another concern is that the editor looks even less newbie-friendly than SC2 does so far, which was possibly the most major gripe I've seen people have. Hopefully that'll be addressed.

Will the editor support any sort of scripting language to use instead of the normal trigger editor, like how there was JASS in WC3 and GalaxyScript in SC2?

Snowplay is a middle man to Unreal Engine 5, we’ll be able to use Blueprints and C like in UE5.
