Thanks for the information. Just so some of your followers know, I live in south Louisiana in zone 9B now. I had some fig trees that I planted the year before. They grew great all year long. We had a very abnormal cold front that came through, that dropped the temps down into the low 20's. It damaged half of the trees in the ground, but they did survive. They all started sprouting new growth in February and were doing great until we had another freak cold snap in March and dropped the temps in the low 30's. It burnt all of the new growth, so the trees had to start all over again and I had no crop last year. Glad, I don't live up north where I would have to fight this all the time. By the way, I live close to cajunb and got all of mu cutting from him, he spoke very highly about you. Have a Happy Holiday season.

My 1st year fig trees, well...most of them, grow like kudzu in Louisiana right up until frost. Then the tips get damage even if I cover them. I`m allowing side branches near the ground to remain...no pruning....to save my trees from the next zone 9 freeze down to zero. Our winters are getting colder and colder and we`re expected to believe the opposite! Ha! 60 year old trees were frozen back to the roots all over the Deep South.

If it wasn't for you, I would have suffocated my figs at the first sign of frost. Hasn't gone below 20°! always watching the 10day forecast...

Thanks for such important info on the figs growing,and just when l need it !❤🎆🙏 Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you Ross! P.S. In s humid Zone 7a here in the Southern PA should l stick to the limited few figs (varieties recommended in your list), or can lalso successfully grow those other hardy varieties recommendex for the arid climates? Thanks,

In zone 5a. I plant mine in ground, along the foundation of the house, on the south side. Works well with chicago hardy. But i also dump an entire leaf bag on top during winter to insulate from cold. I cut them to the ground last season but this season I'm experimenting with leaving a stock or two exposed

Try covering a few branches. Bend them to the ground then cover.

Hey Ross! It is necessary to cover with a tarp or whatever if figs are totally submerged in woodchips? Or is that wasted effort?
@RossRaddi

Yo Dave. A tarp is unnecessary. In the past I did not mulch heavily enough thinking the tarp would insulate. It did not because of air getting underneath quite easily. This is also why wrapping with tarps doesn't work unless you mulch around the skirt of the wrapping.

Is there any reason why i shouldnt just have all of my figs as in-ground low espaliers? And then just pile on leaves and wood chips until the air temp outdoors stops going below 20 F or so? where i am in Massachusetts, most of the time we dont see below -3 F

Low espaliers are wonderful. Ideally at my location, they survive the winter and I can have a larger tree or bush that'll produce more fruit. If I was in a colder place, that form makes more sense.
