Full Story: bit.ly/wENaiv A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip tests his DNA to trace back his African ancestral roots. For the full story: Video by Native Resonance www.nativereson...
I find it interesting. Whenever I see one of these videos, they only mention one source. When I had my DNA tested, I found that that I come from 15 different groups all within West Africa. Am I the outlier or the norm?
I think they mention the biggest percentage. But they should mention everything though. But this is like promotional stuff so I guess it's not that important for them to go into detail. We're mixed of all african groups, ethnicities and countries. So of course we'll get many different groups.
@@Scoring57 The way it's done with this company (at least when they first started out in the early 00s) is they will trace either your matrilineal or patrilineal direct line. So not sure what they are doing today but they would trace you-father-grandfather- g.grandfather or you-mother-grandmother etc if you are a female; that will only show one branch unlike some other companies that are not limited to Africa only(although many people get surprises that reveal their earliest traceable ancestor was not African)
@theblackbetties much respect. I felt the same way but, I turned that anger into production by educating our people. I took the DNA test and found my ancestors were kidnapped from Ghana Fanti tribe. Only justice will come from us when we accept accountable for our future but if we DO NOT know our history then we will remain lost in this system of white supremacy PEACE!!
These results can be quite misleading. Jolas ate spread across Gambia, Senegal and the two Guineas. I don't think you can pinpoint to any particular country. Besides I can almost say with a very high degree of confidence that Ndaiye sometimes spelt Njai is not a jola surname. Probably Wollof. Please take these results with loads of scepticism. I appreciate that dine people would like to fill a void but at the same time, please don't be to gullible.
bro, the result and the country they point out is correct. Jola or Diola pointed here is different from Jola/Diola of Gambia and Senegal. This Guinea Bissau Diolas/Jolas are only limited to Guinea Bissau. Their population is very small that's why they are not well known. They are different from other know Jolas
U don't don't know thing. The jola tribe is one of the last tribes In Africa to accept Islam and christianity so they were sold the most ,,they had kingdom from guenea to Senegal ,Gambia and beyond,,wolof is a sub tribe not an original tribe u fool
"Q tip gets swabbed" I can't be the only one to find that ironic😂. Btw, I'm wondering if any africans took this sort of test just for fun. My parents are both somali but I would like to know the story my dna tells. Wouldn't be surprised to know there is some oromo, amhar, or Yemeni somewhere but other than I'd be damn shocked. Just curious.
he said his dad is from montserrat which has a high population of people from southern asia so he is probably right about having some asian in him somewhere down the line
Al Person those 2 countries have the highest rates in the region, you are right. But most English and French speaking islands have some East Indian population too. Guadeloupe, just south of Montserrat has a good 15-20% whose ancestors came from Pondicherry / Calcutta from 1854
@Al Person Wrong Dominica is the only island that has Caribe people still in existence. For the commentors who don't know. The State of Texas is larger than England or France?
Dope! I was born in Guinea-Bissau. I live in New Bedford MA. I am Cape Verdean and a conscious Hip-Hop artist. Salute to you Q-tip and the folks at Okayafrica! Keep connecting the dots!
And people need to understand that zulus were not always zulu if we trace them back they also came from other tribes jst like how the ndebele ,xhosa, swazi came originate from the zulu tribe but know identify as what the are now ...but they know and recognise where they came from though some may deny this but it is obvious to those who are honest and imbrace they lineage
It's so interesting what we struggle with finding out what our ancestry is, and reconciling that with what we "want" our ancestry to be. Q-Tip wanted to be Zulu & Asian bad. When they brought him his results and this cultured master musician, I sensed some dissatisfaction from him.
Qtip is crazy laid back. I personally would be proud to hear that. Percentages matter of course, but it only takes one inherited trait from your complex genetics to make you who you are.
+king esseen they only talked about results from 1 grdmother , and ignored his fathers side completely, so no wonder he was disapppointed, they wanted to make it all about Africa and this music tribe
@whiptyme Exactly. People got to remember where Asians migrated from and what their original ancestors looked like too. This was beautiful and so moving. I would love to do this one day.
The Jola people just like their Seereer cousins have an ancient and rich culture. They are two of the Senegambia oldest inhabitants. Indeed, these two ethnic groups trace descent to two sisters : Jambooñ (ancestor of the Seereer people) and Agaire (ancestor of the Jola). The legend of Jambooñ and Agaire is well preserved by both groups and well known in the Senegambia region.
What do you mean by "all"? If you're talking about black americans that goes without saying. No one that knows anything needs to be told black americans come from Africa
You do realize that Mongol blood spread far and wide thanks to the empire, right? A whole helluva lot of African, Arab and South Asian people have Mongolian ancestry. So, if you want to see a dunce? Look in the mirror.
I'm Zulu and I was watching him saying he thought he was Zulu like "aww, no man..." cause he does not look Zulu at all. Glad he found his roots though. It is such an important part of who you are, and empowers you to know what you can do.
+Anele Malinga Yeah- probably because beforehand, the only thing he knew about Africa was the Zulu people. Hence why ATCQ called themselves part of the "Zulu Nation". But the Slave Trade ran predominantly from West Africa, so he is likely to originate there.
Zulu people have their roots in DRC aswell hence why we share surnames with certain tribes from that region "Mbhele" basically we're an assimilation of khoisan and central african tribes
Every black British or Americans always think there are few tribes in africa.the most popular tribes they claim(Zulu, Ashanti, Yoruba, ibo etc). there are lots more tribes in Africa.
@@bolajiaiyegboyin3579could you blame us? Most of us are fed stereotypes of what Western Media shows us. Some, if not most of us are lucky enough to read!
it's so depressing not knowing where your roots originated. To be a citizen in a country but never feel at home. I want to do the African ancestry test but I want the Co CEO to give me my results.
That is why we need to know more of ourselves before we perish. Buffoonery and negative publicity made us shamed ourselves and confused it with machismo and arrogance. If only everyone can take it, maybe we would see ourselves as whole instead of being self-destructive and ignorant not only to ourselves but to others as well.
And that still means we are from Africa. 50K yrs ago Africans migrated out of Africa to various parts of the world. Just because some Africans in America were not descendants of the Trans Atlantic Slave trade that does not mean they were not from Africa. We are Africans regardless of how long we have been in other parts of the world.
yes and where did these people come from. lets do a dna of the ones in africa and i am sure we will find they tied to the mid east or asia. these people ran to that part of africa from eleswhere. tip is probably of asiatic or semitic origin
It only gives u the first ancestor captured. Slaves were not of the same ethnic heritage on any american plantation so there is no way any of us is of just 2 or 3 "tribes".
jollof are wolof. those were the black afrikan people described part of the almoravids that invaded Spain. they are also the people responsible for Spanish rice, it's actually jollof rice. a warrior people and a long lost strain of nilotic people as they are linguistically related to the nuer of South sudan. in the Caribbean they are the first to set up revolts and they were eventually banned from Hispaniola and Puerto Rico for spreading jihad against colonists.
I'm Wolof and agree with you that joloff and diola people are based in Senegal. The one who sing has a specific senegalese name. If one day, he want to come to us, welcome brother. We never forget and Goree is still here.
Did i mentionned nilotics or nilo saharians in the first comment you replied ? the answer is no. So what exactly are we discussing, your lack of knowledge about nilotics and bantus being two different groups of tribes. "There is no such things as race" people that created the concept will be interested to know your new vision about races but for now there is in deed such things like race. I gave you enough informations about Bantus, if you still cant get a grasp of what i said learn elsewhere.
Google is your friend. Nilotic people refer to related ethnic groups inhabiting the Nile valley speaking Nilotic languages, a large subgroup of Nilo saharan languages. The term Nilotic was previously used as racial sub-classifications, based on anthropological observations of the distinct body morphology of many Nilotic speakers....These terms are now foremost used to distinguish "Nilotic people" from their ethnic neighbours mainly Bantus. Who confused what ?
Bantus are a group of people belonging to different tribes/ethnicities that share cultural and physical similarities including a same conception of life. Language is only one aspect common to Bantus. Its like talking about Latins or a better example Nordic people (Sweden, Netherlands, Iceland) not only do they have a same cultural background they share multiple physical and cultural similarities. You say a half truth, is it clear now ? I speak a Bantu language keep your little list for yourself.
I will be soon pissed of too, You are the one trying to pass as some expert and you dare call me ignorant. You brought Nilotic and Nilo saharans here, i never did. Bantus and Nilotic can be neighbors but these are distinct sub "racial" ethnics groups. Next time try to learn more if you want to discuss such topics i'm done.
Oprah Winfrey also thought she had Zulu roots. Thats so strange because its common knowlagde that African-american have almost no ancestry from South east or north Africa. Its also better to get more of an admixture result. The part of him that is Guinea Bissau is so small.
This is GREAT! More content on the web like this to combat all the other mindless foolishness! Africa! One day I'll be able to go! Q-tip, can we get an album in 2012?
I didn't bring "nilotic" here..you did: "Bantus share common traits that are disctinctive from nilotic or east africans." There's no such thing as race. E3a is found from north-west Africa to west-central Africa to south Africa to east Africa. It's found in every ethnicity (tribe) in Africa yet linguistically their languages are different. So exactly what is it that determines if one is Bantu or not???
