Here's a note you may find quite interesting. Sandi says that Hitchcock used the sound of a knife in a melon to create the sound of blade into flesh. But you're just as likely to hear knife into cabbage, and from memory I think that's what was used for Psycho 2.

An astoundingly nerdy fact about Pyscho's shower scene is that the zoom in to Janet Leigh's eye was filmed 26 times, and Leigh took a breath in the only usable shot. This was only discovered during editing, they couldn't reshoot so they cut back to the showerhead to disguise it. Hitchcock's wife, Alma, a screenwriter herself, discovered the error - he often worked with her to catch any continuity errors and also on his scripts.

I remember hearing a story that composer George Gershwin would relieve stress by rubbing chocolate all over his body. I thought that was where you were going with this when I saw the title.

Actually, Hitchcock was nominated for Best Director, but the film was not nominated for Best Picture.

Trevor Noah has got to be one of the least likeable and unfunny people on television honestly.

Jason manford and tevor Noah are only 2 years apart, therefore roughly the same age so it's hardly a generational thing. I know of people older than me (I'm 42) who haven't seen it and I know of people in their teens that have seen it. It's more to do with having had the opportunity to see it than an age thing. Many younger people enjoy watching black and white movies.

I think the cheapness of the production of Psycho. Making it with the TV crew, in BW and all that... It kind of ruined later career Hitchcock gor me. Especially his color films. I just get so frustrated with those clasdic thrillers where he had the budget, the color and everything. They just end up being so stilted and awkward. Always making me wish he would be more free, like in Psycho.

Comm'on Trevor, I'm 20 now and saw Psycho when I was 18.

Psycho is a great movie....... I love the line Norman Bates utters - "Uh-uh, Mother-m-mother, uh, what is the phrase? She isn't quite herself today. "

Never seen Psycho, but have read it. All through was sure that via cultural osmosis I knew where it was going but then it got particualrly eerie and I was like, "Oh hang on, maybe I don't..." Same with Misery, actually...

I have not enjoyed even the clips of it. I hate horror movies.

The original Night of the Living Dead also used chocolate sauce for blood, and the scene(s) where you see zombies eating human flesh are eating processed meat covered in chocolate sauce. Sometimes being an extra isn't easy.

Trevor Noah is so unfunny. I don't get why he's given time on any stage or show.

What I'm annoyed with is the fact that psycho gets a lot of attention but in my opinion Hitchcock's finest film has to be dial M for Murder. It is so great and efficient at verbal storytelling wheras psycho falters in some places. Don't get me wrong it is still a brilliant Thriller but the whole " I'm the protagonist but I'm dead halfway through" twist is more of a shock than sustained tension. Hichkock himself once made the distinction well giving the example of a baseball conversation that gets interrupted by a bomb

See, I just don't have that high a level of praise for the shower scene in Psycho. The swinging of the knife and the flailing just don't make any sense. Nobody is capable of clinging to a shower wall like that, especially when it's wet and yet she's somehow able to keep herself upright with several stab wounds by just putting one hand on the wall with the tiniest amount of pressure. Never mind that she did nothing to move away from the attacker. Showers have corners and if someone approaches you out of nowhere, you move away from them. Especially if they have a knife. She saw the knife and started flailing at him instead of moving away from the knife. The entire thing is just inhuman. People don't react like that.

Psycho wasn't nominated for Best Picture. Stephen should have got a klaxon there.

I'm no film editor but how does a scene have more camera angles than cuts? Do they count cameras moving around?

50 cuts in three minutes actually is slow paced compared to contemporary editing.

I would enjoy Fry and Laurie if they got the chance to host SNL. Imagine House and Jeeves! And a cameo by Rowan Atkins. Curious, would colorization ruin Psycho? The cop in that always seemed to be wearing lipstick to me.

When I was doing an art course one of the other people in it made their own amateur black and white horror films on super 8 and I learned of this trick through them. Later on saw a Mythbusters episode that referenced the trick aswell.

It's funny that Alan ruined Psycho for Trevor, because in episode 3 of series L, he mentioned knowing someone who gave away the ending of Psycho. Could Alan have been referencing himself in the third person?

I was waiting for the joke following Stephen saying that Trevor doesn't enjoy black and white. Here I am thinking that black and white is Trevor's thing . . . (The joke being, for those not familiar with him, that Trevor was born in Apartheid South Africa to black mother and white father. He talks about it in at least some of his stand up comedy gigs, and he talks about it in his book "Born a Crime".)

I may have seen it, but that doesn't mean I enjoyed it. I don't really enjoy horror films usually.

I'm 7 years younger than Trevor Noah and I've seen Psycho many times. So have many people around my age. It's a classic. I've even seen a doco called 78/52 all about the shower scene. I'm seeing Psycho on the big screen next month! The shower scene is very entrenched in pop culture. Even people who haven't seen the movie know the shower scene.
