When I saw this I was amazed because I had seen the game and solution in a Famous Five annual from the 70s and I had always thought it was useless information. (Clarkson voice) Until now!

It's a trick that was popular in the 70s, you'd see it in "Things to try yourself" type kids books back around then.

When I was presented this problem as a kid, we just pulled them tight and rubbed the rope until the heat generated from the friction snapped the rope.

they made us do this in high school. i have no idea why and i still have no clue how they did it. i don't even remember how me and my partner got out. either they had to get us out or we just cut the string

I was thinking at first that it couldn't be done because I was thinking of the system as topologically identical to two rings linked together. I don't fully understand how she did it, but I can see that it was related to the points where it only appeared to be rings: at the wrists.

Conran Thomas depending exactly how you twist the loop, you can either reverse the bind or add additional loops to the bind. I agree that is the mistake she made in trying to unbind the others.

I don't think so. There is a common puzzle that uses the same concept in a different form. Even after teaching people the solution, they tend to get twists when attempting to unbind the puzzle because they are not looking for that occurrence.

mm Sue don't think so, her last i think was the season before Sandy took over near the last episodes. Jo was on 2 times with Sandy.. N series and Q (2017/2020)

If these people were intelligent, they'd have known it was not possible. Sue only managed it as the rope around the wrist was not correctly tightened - effecting a similar result as cutting one of the ropes with scissors. That would have qualified as not untying any knot !

That's the whole point of it - this is solvable BECAUSE of the air gap at the wrist. *If you were intelligent,* you'd have spotted this is exactly the escape path.
