Pastors Bryan Wolfmueller and Andrew Packer answer your theological and Biblical questions. In this episode we take up questions about:
* How do we talk to non-Trinitarians, especially Mormons, about God? (Mormonism Research Ministry website: www.mrm.org/)
* Is worry a sin?
* How do we understand passages like James 2 that seem to connect faith and works? (The Lutheran Confessions on James 2, wolfmueller.co/justified-by-w...)
* What does Paul mean in 2 Timothy when he indicates that "women will be saved through childbearing?
* Martin Luther's description of faith: wolfmueller.co/martin-luthers...
* New book: Holy Baptism: An Anthology, www.wolfmueller.co/baptism

On works and faith in James, as one of my friends, Rev. Mason Vieth put it, "St. James isn't spurring us on to works of mercy because it's the way to heaven but because it's the way OF heaven." Another way to think of this is this: Paul and James are using the word "justification" in different contexts. Paul was dealing with people who believed faith did not justify but works do; James was dealing with people who believed they didn't need to do works because they're justified by faith.

Faith and works. This is how I look at it, I know I am saved through Christ alone , I have no good works that can save me. But I am so thankful for what God in his mercy did for me that I do Thanks Living, living out of thankfulness for what He did, wanting to give him glory in all I do.

I was a missionary to LDS folks with Evidence Ministries here in San Antonio. We had to read a book called “Speaking the Truth in Love to Mormons” by Pastor Mark Cares. This is a very tough ministry because Mormons use the same Christian words we do but those words have completely different meanings. Plus they have many other scriptures that they go by. And prophets. Good luck.

Amen! I like to think of the Old Testament as the requirements as a duty because of fear and having to do them and the New Testament as the response with love and faith to do the requirements because we want to.

Fabulous time in the WORD Gentlemen ! If my Lutheran teachers had been 1/3 of what you both are, I'd still be there ! Actually I rejoice in the Essential Unity of the Faith I see in most Evangelical Churches, including my Non-denominational Bible Church. But I love the nuggets and Theological Red Pills from Dr Luther you just dropped, the history is so richly instructive !

That link for Mormon apologetics was helpful on a basic level, but you could clearly see the Calvinist/baptist influence when it came to their opinion on baptism.

Women who are barren and can't have children should not be devastated. God also gives gifts of adoption or fostering. There are thousands of children who need loving parents. You need not be childless. Children are God's gift, and if His plan for you is adopt or foster, don't dismiss it out of hand. God's peace be with you.

I honestly think that ALL Christian couples should at least prayerfully consider foster care and adoption whether they have their own biological children or not.

it's also not just the needs of adoption and fostering; being part of a community all mothers can use the help of a second mum to help the load. After all they say that it takes a village to raise a child.

Worrying is a natural human emotion and feeling, but it can become a sin if it is excessive and it interferes with your ability to have faith and trust in God. It is important to remember that God is in control and that he will never leave us or forsake us.

So the thing about anxiety and worry has its complexities. For most people, it is a come and go-struggle, but for others it evolves to become a chronic plague or disease. Its typical that those who come to struggle as much as that, already had symptoms in their childhood of excess worry/anxiousness. Somewhere in their upbringing, the brain had a trigger. The trigger might be trauma/abuse/environment/genetics (parents that has the same struggle) The problem (and I speak for myself also here), is that you start to develop neuron paths in the brain that can develop into a autopilot path of catastrophic thinking, which leads to panic attacks and/or chronic anxiety in adolescence or adulthood. (I ended up there at the age of 30). Recognizing this on your own, is quite difficult. To break these pathways in the brain, you will most likely need professional help. It requires time and effort to work at this set way of thinking, to break your brain away from the thought patterns it knows all too well. I ended up despairing of my faith as an adult, because I was convinced God hated me in the end, because I could not stop the chronic anxiety and panic attacks. It did not help that I attended a denomination that did not know law and gospel rightly balanced, and had a hard focus on the sanctification of the believer (by preaching the law to all Christians all the time, as they said.) Now here is where God delivered me. I ended up crying out to God The Father and He responded by sending a Lutheran Pastor to me. After that was taken care of, I sought professional help, and that ended my chronic anxiety. Cognitive Therapy was what did it for me. For others it might be different means to an end, but either way, for those of you who suffer chronic anxiety (because you have "lost control" of your thought pattern), please do seek help from professionals. One book that helped me greatly in the process was "The Worry Trick" by Dr. Carbonell

The central problem with Mormonism is the cult aspect: stripping members of agency and critical thinking, as well as the excessive demands of the institutional church for money, blind obedience and free labor. The juvenile doctrinal nonsense spouted by Joseph Smith (a convicted con-man from upstate New York) really is a secondary problem relative to the cult issues.

@@CarolineJoyAmico Myself as well. In reaching out, stay focused on Who Jesus is and who we are to him A slow study of book of Isaiah, in reference to the strict exclusiveness of one God with the numerous references to the promised ‘Son’. Note: Only Rock Only Savior I alone…. None before Me None after… At age of 20, words and Word in Isaiah flipped the switch for me than the more popular apologetic and cult exposés did. In a strictly monotheistic understanding, they picked up stones to kill this ‘mere man’

Hello, I have a question! I have become more interested in theology in a more scholarly way since I have been in graduate school. My question is about apostolic succession. It seems pretty important, as the pastor has the ability to forgive sins during corporate confession by what Jesus said to Peter. We in the LCMS church do not have apostolic succession. Sometimes this seems scary, why should we as Lutheran's not be worried about apostolic succession? Or should we? Hopefully my question makes sense. Thank you

Here are some really good verses for the Mornen . Matt 2:2 Jesus is born a king. No one is born a king, they ordained to become king. The only way Jesus is born a king, is if he is God himself. Also I would use Micah 5:2 “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been FROM OF OLD, FROM EVERLASTING.” This prove that the one sent is from the beginning and always existed.

He is exactly right about the baptism of Jesus will explain the trinity… This is my beloved son. Why would the Father in Heaven say this is my beloved son of it were the same person. Mormons are correct about the trinity being 3 distinct personages.
@CarolineJoyAmico

It’s interesting how we fail at comprehending the deep things of God, when we try to use human reasoning to wrap our heads around it. We are never going to understand the Trinity, and using human reasoning will only mislead us, on this subject.
@felixiusbaqi
@felixiusbaqi 11 месяцев назад
The trinity teaches that there are three persons, not one person… the kicker is that it also teaches that God is a unity e.g we baptize in the “name” of Father Son and Spirit not “names”. Just because we can’t fully understand it doesn’t mean it isn’t true
