Do I need to know 3D modelling (or drawing) to become a texture artist? Will I lose time trying to learn 3D modeling first?

You dont have to but it would help you understand more of the needs learning 3d as well.

do I need to be as good as him in order to get a job though? Ive been getting pretty good at SD and SP. im thinking in the next few months i want to start applying for jobs. my main question im running into is what standard of quality I have to be at before getting my first job? how much are studios willing to train?

Updates are a little lackluster. I've decided to persue Industrial design through school. I still do 3d art but mainly environment and lighting. I'm actually thinking of starting work on an art book. I never did have any luck with a studio job but I also didn't go after it as much. To people looking to get a studio job I'd say keep working hard and your skills will continue to grow and keep applying for jobs you never know when you'll find your start

@lijianbai I got a studio job (they approached me) worked on a few film projects over about a year (Wendell and Wild, The last of us, Leave the world behind). Lost the job due to visa issues (they were in another country and I was remote while we tried to work it out). Now I’m an industrial/ux/ui/web designer lol. This job is great pays well the company is really great and it’s less high pressure than VFX work.
