One thing to consider with this paint as you may not be aware, this paint has a high light fastness, as this paint is used for paint restoration work ! So it is high quality and used to put layers on layers.

I just tried removing the silicone insert, had zero issues! It's in there quite firmly, but not glued in. With the silicone removed the tin holds two extra rows of six pans. That's a TINY footprint for a 24 pan set! Turns out my ideal travel palette was the one I already owned all along

@@iritlandgraf I like knowing I have the option. I don't need such a compact set, nor do I need a set with that many paints right now, but it's probably the best ultra portable option I can think of right now. Most similarly sized mini palettes don't have the amount of mixing wells the QoR Mini has, even without the silicone.

Thank you for reviewing this palette honestly. I've only seen it used on the QoR website so of course, they didn't offer any cons. I am in love with every single color especially the purple magenta & browns. I'm African-American & prefer portraits & the darker one fits my skin-tone perfectly. I was very sick for over a year & I purchased the 24 tube set on sale in order to encourage, reward & invest in myself. I was regretting that the purchase & wishing I'd purchased the mini (as I thought I'd be less nervous about using pans since they're easier to conserve) until I saw your review. Thank you for reassuring me that I made the best decision for me. I hate having a dirty palette, so I would have been driven close to madness due to the difficulty in cleaning it as well as the mini's inflexibility. I'm still super nervous about using such expensive paint, but I hope to find the courage to use them sooner than later.

Really nice colour choices, a bit different from the average. I am a bit palette addicted, love tiny palettes, and this is calling me, just hope I see it on sale somewhere, I would like to experiment with using it alongside other w/c brands, and see what their potential is. I always love the design quality of the qor tins but most are too big, this one is so practical. Reminds me a bit of some of the daler rowney boxes of the early 80's, it is like the larger offspring of their iconic 6 half pan set, very hard to find but soooo tiny!

I love QoR, but it has a strong personality 🤣. The burnt umber sometimes goes cloudy on me, but with a little of the quin magenta or pyrrole orange, it's magic! While I would hesitate to hand a set with cadmium to a child, I reviewed 8 of their non toxic colors for the homeschool market when they first launched. Kids adore and do AMAZING art with the punchy, modern color. I prefer to premix a wash in the small, squat canning jars for little kids. The straight color was a huge hit with my teens. I've been wanting to get a chance to try this kit, and you answered my question: even in half pans it's potent enough to tint rinsewater. I found that challenging outdoors and with water brushes. Thanks for your review!

With the burnt umber, (i) check out whether it makes good neutrals when mixed with the blues, and (ii) try it as an alternative to red for dampening down any greens that are a bit too GREEN. Might also be good in an autumn painting, adding an extra degree of freedom to any areas where you're variegating a Red/yellow/orange mix. Burnt umber is in my first choice squad of 12 but I admit I only tend to use it when the primaries can't do the job.

@@iritlandgraf It always makes me happy to see a set that includes Burnt Umber. I kicked Yellow Ochre off of my palette because it looked really dull and lifeless to me and I can mix something similar with Burnt Umber. But it's really good for mixing greys. Mixed with Payne's Grey it can mix sepia colors and can look close to the darker shades of Raw Umber. I guess this would be also a great travel palette for myself. 😊

QoRs behaves weirdly on some papers, just so you know. I tried it on Saunders Waterford paper, not their loose sheets (which are great and very different) but their 300 gsm CP in a spiral bound pad and the QoR PY 150 completely died on it. I hope I am keeping on subject but I am looking for a quality pan set with very bright colors. In your opinion (which I highly value) what would you recommend for me to purchase if I’m looking for a quality pan set, well-priced, with the brightest colors (I know I can get a “bright”set since I have the Jane Davenport and the prima) and I have Daniel Smith tubes but I didn’t know if I was missing out and since I love Golden acrylics I didn’t know if I should invest in the Qor. What are the brightest, most intensely colored pan watercolors that you have used and recommend? Sorry for the long post-thank you for your awesome videos!
@iritlandgraf
@iritlandgraf 4 года назад
Glad you enjoyed! As for the bright colors, it's not so much the brand as it is the pigments themselves. Some are more vibrant than others. Colors like Quinacridone magenta or rose tend to be bright, Opera pink or Opera rose, Schmincke has a few with the word Brilliant in the name that are super bright, the Hansa yellows and Cadmiums are brighter than the ochres, so it's really a single formula. As a stand alone pan set, this one has a selection of very intense colors, they are not necessarily always very saturated, sometimes the color is very muted, like the grey, but still intense and pigmented. The Mijello gold paints tent to be very intense, maybe looks at those as well. Hope this helps!

I recommend the TUBES of Qor introductory set or high chroma set of 12 each of 5mls. The manufacturers say they have the brightest mixes due to the aquasol, and on Jane Blundell's webpage on colour comparisons, Qor comes out brightest. Someone else said the pans have a colour shift. So why not buy the tubes and put them into pans yourself? They are tricky though as they bleed into one another, take over and flow a lot on certain papers, particularly wet in wet, damp in wet. So they are great for abstract backgrounds, and if you like highly pigmented colour that DOES NOT behave itself. I buy these paints for flow, rather than high chroma pigment, as I like the effects with just two colour mixes with Qor and other paints which is a very unique quality.
@chanelcreadora6570
@chanelcreadora6570 4 года назад
From what I’m seeing with your swatches and the experience I’ve had with QoR for the past 2 years, I’ve come to the theory that their pan paint and tube paint behave MUCH differently. There is a more extreme drying shift with your pan paints than I experience with my tube paint. There is basically ZERO drying shift with the tube paints. The pans are comparable to the drying shift of most other brands of watercolors.

@@alexandrag89 specifically to watercolor, watercolor often fades in intensity or saturation as it dries. QoR tube paint doesn’t fade as much as their pan paint. Meaning. Hello Irit, My QUESTION FOR TESTING Could you tell me if these Qor paints in pans flow less than Qor tube colours? Eg Paynes Grey is a good one to test it out with, as it comes in the introductory tube set of 5ml ones....and in tube this colour has huge flow, half way across the page on a wet surface. By the looks of your sample art, the pans look to have less flow. Again it varies across papers, and how wet the surface is. The aquasol in Qor tubes works magically down a tilted page, and up into colours and takes them over! This would be a deciding factor to buy this set or not for me, as here they are very expensive.... In kindred spirit, Eliza in Sydney, Australia

Where Qor has their own unique binder for their tubes have you experienced the binder separating inside the tubes and does the paint usually dry inside the palette pretty cleanly? If that makes any sense, or does it dry with cracks or a tacky/runny look that might cause trouble if you were to travel with them?
@iritlandgraf
@iritlandgraf 4 года назад
I only had one dud of a tube from Qor and it was their Cobalt violet. The rest are great, the paint dries nicely without cracks and is very easy to rewet.
@hearterin294
@hearterin294 4 года назад
I have three QOR tubes: bismuth vanadate yellow, cobalt teal and permanent scarlet. Both the teal and the scarlet came out of the tubes like a dream, and they dried in my palette quite nicely. No cracking, not tacky, rewets so well. The yellow is another story. It separated heavily from the binder, was very gooey when I remixed it in my palette, and stayed tacky/sticky weeks later, almost like you would expect from a honey-based watercolour. It still rewets so easily, and has a richness of pigment that I worried about, given the amount of binder. Once it has fully set up, I can tip and tilt my travel palette all ways, and it has stayed put in the well. Anyway, I think that this might not be the norm, since I got these tubes on heavy clearance from the local art store because they were trying to get rid of those lingering paints that they weren't planning on carrying anymore. I don't know for how long this odd duck yellow may have been sitting unused. Given the beautiful properties of the teal and scarlet, I would easily buy more QOR paints if I can find them on deep discount (these only cost $15 per tube, which still sounds so high......). Hope this was helpful.
@YukirioAme
@YukirioAme 4 года назад
Thank you both. I was considering that once I run out of some of my grumbacher tubes, with will probably happen pretty soon, I was thinking about which tubes to get and try using. I have used the winsor and newton but where I live a 5 ml tube costs close to 15 dollars each, and the three that I have work pretty well but they have been cracking in their pans and with amazon raising their rates it ends up costing quite a bit here. So I was looking for a brand with similar colors and at a good price. I have a set of the 36 white knights but it is hard to travel with, but they have very bright colors which I like, particularly yellows and blues, and qor seemed to produce some very bright ones as well. So I may try them out once I put the last squirt of two of my tubes into their pans. Also do you know if they life or later pretty easily and how bad do the colors tend to stain?
@iritlandgraf

Lifting and staining really depends on the pigment, brands always rate their paints, so best is to check their websites and choose colors and pigments according to your personal preferences.

Qor not like any other brand. Besides excellent quality and finely ground pigment, the binder is like no other. Clear not yellow, polymer & longer lasting, acid free, stronger adhesive, flexible not brittle, promotes flow, etc. Gum Arabic is none of those things. You can buy a bottle of QoR medium ( Aquazol) and use it with other brands. If you do, you will see that the saturation of their color increases, and there is a reduced loss of % of color intensity between wet and dry, because the stronger binder prevents a large amount of pigment particles sinking into the paper fibers. QoR easily reactivates with water so you can make your own miniature palette with tube paints if the QoR minis are too expensive. The QoR minis are an adorable luxury.
