I got my ticket in (1989) when Morse Code was a requirement, but CW, or QRP didn't interest me as much as it did some others. Now, after being away from the hobby for years, that's about all I can think about. I now see it as the heart-and-soul of what HAM Radio is, i.e., being able to communicate with the most minimal equipment and power. Although, I just received my Icom-7100 and a Kenwood TH-D74A on Monday, have a Xiegu G90, and even a couple of Baofeng HT's coming tomorrow (just because they're about as 'expensive' as a Happy Meal), I'm more excited about my upcoming QRP purchase, whatever that's going to be. For the money, especially, the Xiegu X5105 sure is attractive. Really enjoying your videos, keep'em coming! Now it's back to the CW. I almost feel like I'm starting from scratch. :-(

I may be inspired to try this with my Mountain Topper and maybe my Chameleon MPAS 2.0 whip. I also have that MP1 antenna, but have not touched it in a long time. It just feels like too many parts to lug around, especially for QRP. And while I also several Bioenno LiFePO4 batteries, I really prefer the convenience (and weight) of just a plain little commercial 9V Energizer or Duracell battery for that radio. Just carry a few of them in a plastic bag, and its going to be way lighter than carrying the BBB ("big" blue battery). My preferred antenna setup would probably be the MPAS 2.0 whip (breaks down nice and light and small), with maybe the multi-length counterpoise kit that came with the MP1, and either the ground spike, or clamp setup, similar to what you did here (assuming I can find a park bench near a grill like that). If I manage to get out to try this, I'll let you know how it goes. Keep up the great work with these vids! de K7AJG . .

Looked like a fun day in the part. For making and testing new antennas, I use the AA-230 Zoom. For you, since you don't like to carry around an expensive antenna analyzer, look into the nanoVNA. On ebay the price ranges from 38 to 64 dollars. I paid 64 dollars for mine since I wanted mine to be in a case. Be careful ! I noticed some don't have an internal battery. Read all of the info on the page. I use a KX2 for my go to portable setup, but I also like my little YouKits 4 band radio. I like your antenna. I find it interesting as in the car ride you said you premise for the trip was to setup the super antenna like you were on a beach with no trees ( don't understand why so many guys are afraid of trees ) and test performance of the antenna "stand-alone" with radials laid out on the ground. Then you pull up to campsite and clamp it on a metal BBQ Grill. Typical beach feature. If you want to successfully run 2W portable, you are going to have to maximize other elements of the station. ie: antenna, feedline. For example, a Dipole in the trees fed with open wire line. It goes up faster; is way, way more effective and weighs less than your vertical. Just sayin, 73

In my experience a full size dipole for 40 meters and RG 58 is worth it. Too much compromise in a very small vertical. Use a telescoping pole and make an inverted v or two poles for a dipole. I wonder about the output power at 9 volts. Why not 12 volts? I used a Heathkit HW8 and lantern batteries in the past. Just a thought. Can’t afford to waste any power at qrp levels.

In the comments was a mention of some parks not allowing a wire antenna in a tree. What gives? I can’t see any good reason why not. Frustrated by encroachment on our right to have fun in public parks ... I had one run in with a park “official” who told me I couldn’t operate at all. I showed him my FCC amateur license and told him I was federally authorized to operate. That ended the conversation and he left me alone. I haven’t been out in a while. Is there some kind of new regulation? Great video as usual. Thanks. MikeinMinnesota N0WDM

I think your deduction that the Super Antenna would work well on a beach is accurate. My own thoughts echo yours... I use a long wire antenna in the woods where there are trees and the MP-1 on any beach or close to a large body of water. I also try to clamp it to something that is metal. Car, fence, etc. The BBQ seemed like a good idea to me. And the radials are important. I think your call is N9YO (hard to know for sure) and if you did this on October 19, 2019 you got out pretty well on 40m and 20m according to the Reverse Beacon Network. Just no control over who is listening. The RBN reports with the signal strength look pretty good so the MP1 is working. For what its worth my longest QRP QSO on CW was 7,000 miles on 15m with an Elecraft K1 and my MP-1 clamped to the steel bumper of my Jeep TJ parked about ten feet from the NE end of large fresh-water reservoir. I've had good luck with my MP-1. I carry it and an LNR EFT10/20/40 when I go out portable. But I'm careful to deploy the MP-` only when I'm in a location which favors a small vertical. Usually a beach... as close to the water as I can get it. And also usually clamped to my Jeep's steel bumper to give it a big mass to help the OEM radials. 10 feet of RG-8X feed line. Using it in town is useless because the buildings small verticals have a low angle of radiation (which makes them great for DX) and all the buildings soak up the QRP RF as it tries to beat its way through a couple hundred of them on its way to the horizon. So hill tops... and beaches. Clamp the antenna to something big and metal. Deploy the radials. Use CW. Watch for your RBN reports (and don't blame the antenna for no QSO as long as you are getting reports from the RBN - or other spots).

Yeah you're right. I have narrow windows to operate (family and job) so I tend to bring extra stuff so I won't forget anything and ruin the video.

If you think forgetting the Speaker is a problem try travelling 75 Miles from home in mainly rush hour traffic, setting up your Antenna and then realising you brought everything including the tackle to make a brew but forgot the Transceiver😔😩😭😔😊😂😂😊😊👍👍Just remember to keep smiling and next time don't forget the Speaker😉😊.

The conclusion is that your antenna is weak! An ordinary dipole would be much better. Regards, Chris 3Z9N

Well I started off knowing it was weak. But too weak for mountain topper? No not entirely was conclusion.

I dont understand this kind of things. This is not ham radio. It's a supermarket review. Is there something homemade? At least a dipole or an end fed antenna with some kind of homemade transformer. Yeah, you can tune a railway line too but, for sure, it will not radiate properly.
