I love when a company takes a simple design and executes it well and that's what I see here definitely will be getting one of these in the future great review
Dude, I wanna thank you for introducing me to the penguin. I first bought the jade handle w/black blade and today received my copper handle w/black blade. All knife collectors must have this copper handle black blade qsp penguin.
I am going for the brass handle with black blade and am wondering if the handle has a coating on it? I want raw brass, not coated. I'll have to put it in boiling water with baking soda when I get it to see, I guess.
For me it's a good weight. Maybe not for bball shorts, but you won't regret getting one. I've had compliments from others about how they really like the looks and the weight and now they're going to get one for themselves. I'm sure you'll like it.
I think the micarta on the penguin is top notch, I think the penguin is fantastic for it's price. The thing that bothers me is now knowing how cheap good micarta can be produced and feeling really ripped off by higher end companies who have upcharged for micarta scales, sometimes micarta scales can be marked up as much as 1/4 of the price as the g-10 version s of the same knives, it just feels like bigger companies are making a huge profit off of a material that can be produced super cheap!
Yeah i think it depends, i dont think it means that others are ripping off in all cases sometimes it boils down to their supplier or how much they buy at a time to get discounts or if they are cutting the budget down in other areas like heat treatments exc..
I am a budget knife guy, I own maybe 50 knives now. I only own 3 knives that cost over $100. I wanted to chime in and say that I can't put this knife down since I bought it. The micarta has a great feel to it. I make my own micarta these days and have replaced a few scales because I can't get the feel I'm after, but this has a great feel to it. This knife is the best washer knife I own.
Its definitely a great model, and theres nothing wrong with loving budget knives I also love budget knives and the budget knives of today have went so far its crazy how great they are
@@1964krazyeric 440c still is great imo, might be even be better considering you can get it for such great prices and its a steel thats easy to heat treat so its usually done fairly well. Also the knives today are done and built so good and thats a plus also
The micarta on this model blew me away, feels 10x better than the micarta on my Civivi, Bradford, and even my Becker. It feels almost identical to the micarta on my We Banter. But slightly softer and more grippy. Idk how QSP is making money on this knife. I bought this knife as a christmas gift to someone else, now I have a QSP itch deep down inside lol.
It’s nicer than most Chinese micarta but wait til you use TOPS.. that’s real micarta and it makes all the others feel more like plastic or a gel resin.
Just subscribed great channel and content! What would you rather EDC if you had to choose and get rid of one, this Penguin or the Civivi Elementum? Thanks!
DEPENDS ON WHICH ONE, BECAUSE THERES SO MANY DIFFERENT VERSIONS NOW, MY FAVORITE PENGUIN IS THE NEW XL TITANIUM ONE. BUT IF IT WAS BETWEEN THE BASE MODELS OF BOTH THEN THE ELEMENTUM
The washers aren’t double phosphor washers, they are actually 1 phosphor and 1 Teflon washer on each side. So 4 washers, yes, but Teflon and phosphor bronze
Been having problems finding one in the blue jean micarta in stock. But I just ordered one from Atlantic Knife Co. for $27.84, free shipping. I treat all my new D2 blades with EDCi and haven't had any spotting or rust issues, living in humid Florida. I had the itch that needed to be scratched, and will be ordering the Artisan cutlery centauri this week, so I was looking for an inexpensive, well made knife. Really love the look of that jean micarta. Thanks for the review, helped solidify my purchase.
I've been watching through videos on the Penguin before ordering, which I finally did, and I know this is a bit of an older video. It seemed to me that almost every reviewer talks about recessing the screws on the pocket clip and have a gripe about it, but you're the first I saw that realized (or at least stated) that they couldn't do that without weakening the scale too much due to the recess. That was my assumption as well. I also don't know if flat heads would be better, as there would still need to be either a countersink or counterbore to make them flush, and if not there would be more of an edge to catch than a panhead screw like it has. Regardless, looking forward to the knife, and thanks for the great content!
What is your opinion on the jade g10 scales on the other knives? I’m torn on that vs the micarta on the penguin. I just like the look of the jade on stonewashed blade steel
This knife has been evading me this is the knife I can’t seem to be able to get a hold of one I have qsp parrot and if the parrot is any indication of the penguin 🐧 it has 2b good the parrot is $20 and I love it I have a few knives now I just started collecting but the qsp is what ends up in my pocket more often then not or the banter
I have the green version of this knife, honestly prob one of my fav knifes and I have a few in my mind higher dollar knives and I just tend to carry this knife more then most of my other ones
Been trying to get one but sold out everywhere herd a lot of good things hopefully I can find one I’m new 2ur channel and I’m already a fan found ur channel from ray from everyday city Cary
Thats awesome Mark thanks for checking us out Rai is a great dude, the Penguin is a good edc blade especially for the price the micarta is some of the better micarta imo
Ah, that has been my mistake, not leaving the Locktite sit for 48 hours. Also, thank you for the tip about the sharpening choil and the stop pin. I purchased some diamond bits for this but had not thought to check for stop pin dependence. I held off on purchasing this knife because of my large to extra large hands but I see you placing your pointer finger over the bump out section next to the blade. I suppose that might work. It is tough to know with out handling the knife first and that is not an option for me.
Yes it is, Blade Banter has a hand guide that you can print, and he shows with knives he reviews how it will fit in your hand, ive done a video on how to tell if a knife has good blade geometry from pictures. But I should do one on ergos Ive talked about this a bit, but that giude from Blade Banter really shows you and you can base that off of the handle length
2 years late on this but just picked one of these up and it came super tight. Requires a full roll just to open, anyone else experience this? If so what was your fix, if any?
both of mine came super smooth, you should do a couple things make sure you add some oil like slickm all or kpl to the pivot and detent, also try taking a half turn on the pivot screw it might be over tight, some times parts expand in shipping
@@NeevesKnives thanks for the reply Jared! Did both of those and it is flipping nice and smooth now. Gotta practice the reverse flick because there is not very much room on the opposite side. Still a wonderful knife for the price, can't get over the feel of the denim micarta. Keep up the great videos! Cheers! 😁
I agree with you bill64gr. I inadvertently left a D2 knife out over night and had spotting by morning. D2 combined with my carelessness is a poor combination.
@@lavenderpants8695 for this Price point im damn happy to get D2, I know people are getting used to seeing it, but in all reality D2 is a great steel especially for a a budget knife hell last year companies were still using 7 and 8cr and some still are
