I have both and like the Penguin more as well. Out of the box, the Elementum had a better action. I cleaned them both up, and now the actions are both great. The Penguin is using bronze washers + thin plastic washers. Some people won't like the plastic washers, but it is one of the smoothest actions on any knife I own, of any price point. Couldn't care less about the plastic. Definitely appreciate the ultra-smooth action.
@avgsgn

Yeah actually teflon washers are possibly the smoothest! The only down side is that they are more susceptible to damage =\

I have both knives and for how I use my blades I say the biggest difference is blade shape and grind. The sheep foot is a favorite of mine for slicing. The drop point shape is great for piercing before a cut or more precision cuts or turns. I'd use drop point to carve. Price is the other big factor. One was $32 (penguin) the other $51 (elementum). I did get micarta on the penguin and D10 scales on the civivi cuz I wanted the purple lol. To me thy blades are all but interchangeable.

Good video. It looks to me that the steel for the QSP Penguin was cut at a transverse angle to the rolling direction of the steel. Maybe someone with a some more knowledge of metallurgy than me could confirm this. If they cut it blade out "against the grain" it would make the tip a lot more prone to breaking, which is less of an issue for a Wharncliffe, but much more of a problem with a drop point or even more with a clip point blade design. Most knives are cut out of the steel parallel to the rolling direction.

I recently got both knives and i Agree with almost everything you said with the exception of the pocket carry. My elementum pretty much disappears in the pocket and the penguin I find catches a lot on the finger studs when I go to remove it. I don’t think I could pick a winner though both are great I feel fancier with my civivi but I can’t argue with the value of the penguin which is still worth another 20 over the asking price.

Good job on the comparison. I have both knives and am torn between which is best. I get bored with only a flipper tab so I tend to carry the penguin for the fidget factor. A great 3rd knife for this comparison is the Sencut scepter which I also have. Consider comparing it to either knife. It has the best action of the three. To be honest I really like all of them and I would highly recommend all three.

Love my Penguin. It is my go to "getting this done around the house" knife. The shape is so utilitarian. Got an Elementum, and it was too small for me, and I returned it. Instead, I opted for a similar knife, the QSP Hawk. Same shape as the Emelentum, but a little larger, and I can get 4 full fingers on it.

The penguin is fantastic. I carry it as often as I carry my Spyderco Para 3, knife which is also a fantastic EDC. One thing that wasn't mentioned here, for obvious reasons is edge retention. IDK about the Elementum, but the Penguin has excellent edge retention. I process A LOT of cardboard at work. The Penguin holds an edge better than any knife I own, including the Para 3. Though D2 is notoriously difficult to sharpen, the thin blade geometry of the Penguin actually makes the blade easy to retain. I have been able to maintain it by stropping alone If you can only buy one of them, buy the Penguin. You can even get it in S35VN at Knives Plus for $59.99, just a few dollars more than the Elementum, though I really like the D2. LTK tested the Penguin and it came back with a Rockwell of 61.

I’ve had an elementum since last year, and acquired a penguin last week. I find the blade shape of the elementum has more all-around utility. I do wish it had the bronze washers over the bearings, as I have cleaned the knife with water after food prep and accidentally left the bearings dry (wouldn’t be as big of a problem with the penguin and its washers). A small issue I had with the Penguin is that the micarta puts off a strong oily smell when wet. Maybe it’s some kind of preservative on the fibers. Both are good knives, but I lean towards the elementum.
@avgsgn

For me, I feel that the denim micarta on the Penguin is a little too smooth. I wonder if it’s possible to source out phosphor bronze washers for the Elementum?

I own both of these tiny knives, I have to say I like the Elementum just a tiny bit more, both are great knives but the Elementum is just a bit smoother than the Penguin and the thumb studs on the Penguin are just a little bit sharp, it's makes your thumb raw if flipped several times and snags on your pocket.
@avgsgn
@avgsgn 3 года назад
Interesting take. I don't find the thumb studs on the penguin sharp but I can totally relate - I've handled some pocket knives with thumb studs from hell. And yes - while the action on the Penguin is great, the Elementum is, hands down, smoother!
