Power hooked up but no life! This retro car radio/tape player is from the late 1970s. Let's see if we can get this retro classic playing again. In this Part 1 we do the initial evaluation and let out to find out why it has no response. Will it even work? If we can, it will find a home in a 1981 Mustang.
See the checklist which appears when status changes, for tracking what is discovered that needs addressing in Red, followed by Green when resolved.
NOTE: Fixing things is a hobby for me; this is not instruction, it is for entertainment for people like me who enjoy watching projects unfold and the experiences gained. If you attempt to do some of the things in this video you are at your own risk. I am using special tech-bench safety and current limiting equipment not detailed here so don't take for granted you can just plug these old items in safely without them being checked and repaired correctly. Check out the link below to Mr Carlson's Lab video below.

Thanks to shango066 for championing the approach of "fix it first", before mass re-capping. See shango066 for many examples of that approach.

It is never fun going over someone else's repair attempt. First you have to find the mistake(s) and then correct them. Then find out what was really wrong. You have a sensible process fixing old electronics (using a step by step repair evaluation ). Learned quite a bit about a vintage 8 track machine from watching this.

Thank you! I enjoy troubleshooting as I think I learn more that way. I credit shango for getting that concept out there and lending his credibility to the philosophy - fix it first. I will just need to factor in other repairman's footsteps into the troubleshooting challenge as most items decades old have been worked on at some time. The third of the "lost projects" had some modifications done by someone before me which I did respect very much, but I do wonder what their goal was. Looking forward to all the input on it as I still don't really get it. The fourth is a hoot I think.

Great Video! I am currently repairing an identical unit out of my 1978 Mark V and in need of a motor for the tape deck. What was your source for the NOS motor as I am unable to find one. Thanks for your help!

Thanks! Check out Part 2 where I replace the motor and work on the Program Change mechanism. Good luck.

Hey PF, got lucky on the first problem, not so much with the 8 track. :( Hope you can get it working. :)

Hi Doug, would rather be lucky than good right? Did some research on this unit before opening it. Sounded like if anything goes sideways with the integrated circuits the unit becomes a parts set just like "that" as the chips are crafted from unobtainium. Being something which belongs to another fellow, who is a friend of a friend, to go into a Mustang amps up the stress a bit. Thanks

@@PracticallyFixed My standard reply when asked by people to fix things is that I don't charge for repairs, but no guarantees. LOL

One of my worries is things just disintegrating in my hands as we work on these radios. They don't make 'em like they used to. Things from the 30s and 40s? Tanks.

When you say you can only listen to 8-track what do you mean - the radio doesn't work? Just thinking about the switches I discuss in this video... The schematics and service information for the radio in this video was bought from Sams Publishing using the radio part number. For example, the radio in this video was part number D8AF-19A188-AA. (However there were some revision differences in the radio I worked on here which Sams did not show related to the audio board.) The docs for the radio in this video does not cover your radio version - I checked. Sams (samswebsite.com) has an enormous set of service info, including schematics, instructions, circuit board layouts and photos, and has been around for about 80 years (US made radios-TVs post-WWII). On their website you can find the info and usually there is a download function. The info for this radio was about 20 pages of info, photos, schematics, etc. They do charge for it, but if they have it for your radio it is invaluable. Be aware of some cautions about that radio. I understand that it should always have speakers attached to each channel and not turned on without them. Also, the parts are known to be impossible to get and are failing due to age. See a useful video by Barry's 8-Track (Boz Fone) which I will link here where he discusses the issues with the radio you have. Since he put that video out, its now says he will "no longer touch it." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RIuD4_O-NQ8.html Hope that helps some.

@PracticallyFixed thanks and yes only the 8 track works I did have am also but that quit working a week ago basically everything works except I can't get any reception if u hit scan the radio just keeps searching like there isn't a antenna and I checked with a known good antenna and also pulled apart radio and the socket and wiring look good

It sounds like the amplifier and tape preamp circuit works along with the drive mech - leaving a problem with the radio front end. If the antenna wiring is ok, and you have already been inside the unit, then I guess I would check the antenna connection traces on the board for a crack in the board or a cracked solder connection (age and vibration does that) from that point. If not that, it may have a dead chip it in it etc. like ol' Barry says. Good luck man.
