This is 10th video in this video series and it's about preparing your quad for good and safe first flight.
Setup is mainly related to KK2.0 board and it's settings but also to some other steps.
Here is part list of all the parts that I am going to use until the end of this build series:
www.dropbox.co...
WARNING:
Whenever you are working on a multi-rotor remove your props for safety! Although they look like toys, multi-rotors are very dangerous. If the prop hits you or anybody else it can cause serious injuries.
In first 9 videos (and 4 how-to's) we've almost build this quad. However, setting it up is even more important. If you follow these 11 steps you should have enjoyable first flight. However, certain settings as PI values cannot be set before flight. So, on maiden flight you will have to tune your quad for best performance. Settings shown in the video are great for start with, however, quad will perform sluggish and feel a bit disconnected as they are a bit low. You will have to bump PI values up, but I'll talk more about this in future videos.
STEP 1 (00:31):
To make sure nothing is left behind, reset the KK2.0 to it's factory settings.
STEP 2 (00:46):
Perform ACC calibration. This step is crucial because it tells the board what is level. Make sure the quad is on a flat and level surface when doing this. If not, board will think that this is level and it will make the quad drift once in the air. Also, don't touch the quad during this process.
STEP 3 (1:09):
In "Mode settings" put self-level feature on AUX. That way you will be able to control self-level function in the air using a switch on 5th channel. Also, on maiden flight, make sure that self-level is off. This feature must be tuned properly before using it and it could make things more complicated than necessary on your first flight. Also, check that roll and pitch axis are linked (they are by default).
STEP 4 (1:27):
In "Misc. settings" make sure height dampening function is on 0. This is cool feature, but it should be used after the quad is fully tuned. Most people refer to it as a "poor mans altitude hold" :). Also, it's more useful for beginner pilots than it is for experienced ones. Basically, this feature tries to maintain altitude when the aircraft is pitching forward by regulating throttle. Experienced pilots do this automatically so thats why it's more suited for beginners than it is for advanced pilots.
Also, if you have voltage alarm set up (check this video if you don't: • Quadcopter build - KK2... ) here you can set the voltage at which the board will start beeping. For 3S batteries 10.5V is OK (3.5V/cell).
STEP 5 (1:49):
Load QuadroCopter x-mode motor layout. Since this quad is build in X configuration, this is what you must use. Of course, if you have + or any other configuration you should load them in this step. Also, if you want to check current layout, you can do this by going into "Show motor layout" menu where you can see motor layout and motor direction.
STEP 6 (2:09):
Under receiver test you will perform most critical step. Make sure your controls are in right order. So, when you move aileron stick, the same should be happening on the board. Also, check the direction of all channels. If you move aileron to the left, board should do the same. If you have wrong channel order, you can change this in you mixer editor on the transmitter or you can change the leads order on your receiver or on the board itself. If the channel order is correct, but the directions of a channel is wrong, simply reverse/invert this channel on the transmitter.
Also, use your sub-trim function (or if you don't have one, then your main trims) to adjust main four channels to 0. That way when the stick is in the neutral position, the board will receiver exactly that.
STEP 7 (3:04):
Adjust PI values as I've shown in the video. These are recommended by KapteinKuk as best for start with. In my experience, these are a little bit low for this quad and they will have to be increased when tuning.
STEP 8 (3:55):
Set P values for self-level feature as shown in the video.
STEP 9 (4:10):
Perform ESC throttle calibration. KK2.0 makes this step really easy because you can do throttle calibration for all four ESC's at once. If all of your motors start at the same time, throttle calibration step is completed.
STEP 10 (4:50):
Motors should spin as shown in the video. If not, switch any to motor wires to reverse the motors rotation.
STEP 11 (5:22):
Apply 50% throttle and rock the quad. The motor that you push down should speed up because it tries to compensate your movement.
You need:
Transmitter, quad and a battery.
Enjoy RC as much as I do! :)

I laughed long and hard when the extra hands.appear to help with the power up, if only! I think I will quickly go and try something funny as I edit my vid I am doing on the 9X and the ultimate upgrade you can do to it. capping it off with a bit on ER9X for beginners. Nice contribution. I have had trouble with some parts for my APM 2.5 and also some config issues so I Am putting the KK on it and going out onto the icy field to fly something. I have just about had enough of the "winter workbench" for the meanwhile. It has been a lifetime this winter. Going to try your PID and general setup for the KK2.0 V2 F.C., had it on a Tri, (my first scratch multi...) and I never dialed it in properly, and with the new frame, a Hobby King x650F(quad) , I will try to set it up and get some stable and predictable behaviour even in the -8 C temperatures. I will just bring a warm battery Like your editing BTW :-)

In your tuning video after this which you ref this video first you show setting 70 on yaw P gain but here you show 50 as start point. Does it matter which? Cheers for the least intimidating kk2 tuning videos. Check that sorry, its SL you have as 70 P gain. Apologies :) I shut and and tune now.

Help I can't get my motors to spin, I do the throttle pass thought and then nothing happens when I throttle up, no motors spin. Also I. Cant sub trim enough to be able to zero the channels, it's like my sticks have bad springs. 120 sub trim isn't enough to be able zero said channel. My ESCs are warm to the touch, is that correct?

Hi. So I have a 2.1.5, and Im using a 4 in1 ESC. When I test the motors, and use the sticks to test the controls, the motors that speed up usually stay up, until I give it opposite stick. Was it a bad idea to try the 4 in1? Also, Im already spec-ing my next build, but its with opto esc's. How do I connect the UBEC Im getting to the FCM, if the usual sets of pins arent available? You know the KK only powers up on the M1-8 side on the M1 pins. Thanks. ps....edit...Sub'd..by the way...thanks for the vid!!

Hello there I just put together my first quad with KK2.1.5 board. Followed your video, didn't miss anything. Motors 1,3, and 4 come on as soon as The quad is armed, but motor number 2 come on after I have moved the throttle about 6 notches on my Futaba T14SG radio. I have checked all the wiring and spent hours trying figure out what could be wrong. If you could help me out here, I'll appreciate it. Thanks.

sorry for the silly question, Im a total noob building a quad from scratch, does the kk2 come with the required cables to connect the RC Turnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter w/ Module & 8ch Receiver (Mode 1) (v2 Firmware) or does the transmitter comes with the cable? If not do I need to buy a specific cable to connect both, 320 female to female?

Where should the power from my UBEC be connected ? If it's to the Rx as it is in every other application then I don't get M1 to be the power supply. Do I splice the UBEC into M1 Red & Brown ? There are some critical steps in the instructions missing. Next - when I get into ESC calibration mode on full throttle I get 1 beep 4 times then 2 beeps 4 times then 3 X 4 then 4 X 4 etc ad infinitum. WTF ?

Hi there, thanks for the great videos In step 11, I rock the quad as described but it doesn't sound to me like there is any difference in motor speeds.. could I have done something wrong? Richard
@eluminerRC
@eluminerRC 9 лет назад
It's relatively hard to hear the difference. Put your ear next to the motor.
@eluminerRC
@eluminerRC 11 лет назад
Well, it's hard to judge quads behaviour without taking off. Sometimes it seems like it will flip, but once you give it enough throttle it flies OK. These settings are not for flying. That's why I call them "initial". These are great base for tuning. I'm overdue with "tuning guide" video, but I will post one as soon as possible. However, you should definitely program the ESC, or even better, flash them with BLHeli (or SimonK) firmware. My next video is about this so check it once I upload it.
@eluminerRC
@eluminerRC 11 лет назад
It depends on lot of things (weight, motor/prop combo, flying style, wind conditions etc.) but I usually get around 10 min. Well, if you stay out of juice, guess what... you will fall out of the sky. Not only that, your LiPo will be useless too, because LiPo's shouldn't be discharged completely. That's why you must have voltage alarm of some kind to know when your LiPo is at critical voltage (shouldn't be under 3.3V/cell) and then land as soon as possible.
@eluminerRC
@eluminerRC 11 лет назад
I won't do video about it, but this is very simple. You have 4 ESC's on a quad. Each has positive and negative wire. All you have to do is solder all positive wires together into one "group" and all negative wires together into another. Then, solder connector to this (positive to positive "group" and negative to negative) and connect the battery. It's that simple. These power distribution boards are not anything smart, they just reduce the clutter that you get with soldering method.
@eluminerRC
@eluminerRC 11 лет назад
First, be 100% positive that you've performed ESC calibration properly. Try to hold buttons longer before putting throttle to idle (wait for more beeps or something). Some ESC's may behave differently. If that doesn't work, try to switch two motors on the KK2.0 board. Switch one motor that starts normally and one it doesn't. If the problem moves with the motor, then you know that the problem is with the board. If the same motor starts late, then the problem is in ESC/motor.

@eluminerRC
@eluminerRC 11 лет назад
Check my two videos: "Soldering connector" and "ESC installation". The optional SK450 PCB plate does exactly that. You solder battery leads and ESC leads to its terminals, and inside the PCB plate are connections between those. If you don't buy this optional plate, you will have to solder all ESC wires together or buy universal power distribution board. Hope that explains it.

Well, this is only the first part. Second part will be tuning guide. Now, these initial settings are great for quad tuning, but they will work on a tri as well. Tuning process is very similar for both, so you will be able to use those instructions on a tri. Stay tuned.
@eluminerRC
@eluminerRC 11 лет назад
Well, my best bet right now is that you should program your ESC's, especially timing mode. Chech my Turnigy Plush ESC programming video. You should have done this step anyway so there is nothing you can lose. I don't think that KK2.0 has anything to do with this.

Connector must be male version of one that you have on your batteries. Most batteries use XT60 female connectors, so in that case you need to solder XT60 male connector in order to be able to connect the battery. You can pick them up in HobbyKing or eBay.

Quadcopter yaws by slowing down two opposite motors. So, it's not weird if they stop at very low throttle. You can't fly with very low throttle anyways so it doesn't really matter as long as quad flies good.
@eluminerRC
@eluminerRC 11 лет назад
No problem. :) Yeah, the logical conclusion is that the problem is in the ESC's. Did you try to change timing mode on them? Flashing might help as well, I'm not sure. Which chipset do you have, Atmega od SiLabs?
@eluminerRC
@eluminerRC 11 лет назад
Messing with LED's require a lot more knowledge. There are LEDs that work on many different voltages. Sometimes even a current draw could be an issue with hi-power LEDs. Learn one step at a time. ;) Leave LEDs for later.

@eluminerRC 11 лет назад
Like I said, buy any LiPo voltage alarm (it's 2$) and when it's starts beeping, land (you just have to connect them to the balance plug on your battery). Flying without voltage alarm is not safe in my opinion.
@eluminerRC
@eluminerRC 11 лет назад
There is nothing to mention. Check out my voltage alarm setup video. Voltage alarm is a part of every KK2.0 board. Only thing you have to do in order to make it work is connect it to the main battery somehow.

when i do the esc calibration, everything goes well until the part where you bring the throttle to idle: the motors start running and no beeps go off. please help

Hello, can you help me please, on my kk2 when I am doing a receiver test it is telling me all my channels but 1 (throttle) have no signal, but my reciever is definitely binded.

Do you have CPPM on? Only use it if the Rx supports it. It passes all the control signals through only the throttle input, so it lets you eliminate the other 3 Rx to KK cables. It should be OFF if you have a regular mode Rx.

I suggest SunnySky x2212 980 kv motors and some 9" props. I use Graupner 9x5 props, but some SlowFly 9x4.7 will work as well. You'll fly with 8x4 or 10x4.5, don't worry. Play with this and enjoy.!

Did you check my other videos, especially one related to ESC programming? If you programmed your ESC in the same way as I've shown, you should be good to go. You should never you LiPo mode on a quadcopter.

If it says 0.0V, this means you didn't set you voltage alarm properly. Check my voltage alarm setup video. For the other part, I'm not sure where the problem is. Maybe the 5000 is just to heavy.

Thanks! Yeah, I couldn't get all zeros because of the bad gimbal potentiometers in 9XR either. You can't do anything about it on the KK2.0. +2/-2 is OK, you can fly with this with no problem.

Yes. Of course, as I said in the video, you will have to tune PI setting on your maiden flight. Check KK2.0 tuning guides on RU-vid to see how to do this. I will do my one in the future as well.

I like this tutorial! Just one or two things. You did not mention how to ARM the KK2. I found that in another video. Also how to turn Self level using the stick option. I have a Turnigy X9 that is not as flashy as yours. Please tell me how to use one of the knobs to be able to tilt a Tarot gimbal that I plan to use under my DIY quad. Kudos!

ok, ive just tried all that again, but not change, if i do receiver test and set throttle to 20 and leave it, it stays on 20 so i assume the controller is ok, the esc's are turnigy plush, could flashing them with a flash board help? i can see that you get a lot of questions so i appreciate your reply, thanks

i have found this video very helpful but i have a problem, my quadcopters motors speed up by themselves, like if i have it on flat surface and give say 10% throttle and dont touch stick it raises motor speed itself after about 2-3 seconds, and this makes maintaining a height very difficult when im flying because it just gains altitude. do you have any ideas?

+george aura You probably figured it out by now, but if you go to your FUNC SETTINGS menu, it will be the first option on the list.

Hm, not sure, but try this: keep throttle to full until you hear one, then two, then three and then four sequential beeps. Then idle it, wait for a beep and let go.

Some more advice... adjust your P gains higher if your quad takes off and then rolls over. I used 50 as a starting point.

Depends on what transmitter you have. You can either change mixes in your transmitter or simply connect AUX from KK2.0 to the different channel on your receiver.

I meant flight controller (like KK2.0 board), not transmitter. However, I'm not sure why would it be underpowered. Did you calibrate the sticks on your 9X?
@madsloper
@madsloper 11 лет назад
The fix is probably the trash can since it probably cost more to return it to HK in shipping cost than its worth. I knew there was a reason I ordered two boards; I had a 50/50 chance of having at least one board working.
@eluminerRC

I'm now sure what's wrong. Try to calibrate your ESC's, KK and transmitter sticks again. Maybe you have bad pots on you transmitter. Really don't know. :(
