If your Cleanflight or Betaflight quadcopter won't arm, there's a relatively short list of possible causes. I'll take you through all the possible things that could be preventing your quadcopter from arming, so that you can find the one that's affecting you, fix it, and get into the air!

This hobby sure is hard to get into, I have had experience with PC's my whole life and even working in CLI's and old school DOS and just getting a tinyhawk 2 to bind and arm is giving me a run for my money. I'm not going to give up but damn.... I just wanted to fly the little guy around!

I think that firmware's and technology is getting on the way of fun for people in the hobby just make a board pre-programmed so we can fly why do we have to be a rocket scientist to figure this out if you want people in the hobby then simplify it I can't be the only one that feels this way someone buys one can't program it and guess what they'll never buy another that's a great marketing strategy if you ask me

Hi - just wanted to let you know that even in 2020 this info is still great. Couldn't figure out why my quad wouldn't arm after putting in a new 3s battery...caused my little micro quad to "lean" a little too much exceeding the small angle setting.

1. Quad is not level 0:00 2. CPU Load too high 3:50 3. Receiver end points / binding 6:30 < most common is is min_check 4. Receiver channel to function binds 10:15 set min_check = 1005 (for a throttle that bottoms out at 1000)

4. For me, the arm switch was defined only in the wrong area ... I had never change this value ...i dont know how this happend. Betaflight is bitchy and makes me what it wants ^^

thank you!!!!.....joshua bardwell my warp quad ripped a hole in night sky!..it would not arm! then i found this video brought the throttle value down and it armed its a beautiful 6" fire ball and performs amazing!.. cant wait to build my next screamer with the hype train motors the emax magnum and armattan 6" frame...

Just watched 3 videos and tried everything. My brand new hglrc xjb-145 with spektrum satellite with telemetry will arm just fine as long as its plugged in to betaflight, but if its armed and betaflight is disconnected it will disarm and will not arm at all without usb connected to betaflight... It also makes me rebind every single time its powered up

Hi, thanks for the video it was helping me. But i have one more problem. I got a DX8 gen2 and a Shuriken 180 pro with DSMX receiver. When i try to fly i can fly about 10-15 meter a way from me then. She says beeep bip beeep bip beeep bip and she shut down and does fall to the ground. When i go over to her i can arm her and fly again until she does shut down again. I think it might be a range issue, but i should be able to fly very far with my setup. Can you help me or do you know someone who can help me?

hi jhosua i just im new in the fpv, want to ask about the arming switch,.every time i switch to arm its turns red color not yellow,,. and my motor wont spin,.. so what i gonna do to fix it?

Hey umm.. Josh, I crashed my Tiny whoop pretty damn hard, broke the cloverleaf antenna because it landed upside down on acro at full throttle, wouldn't arm, plugged it into Betaflight and the "Calibrate Accelerometer" is grayed out like on your screen how "Calibrate Magnetometer" is grayed. Do I need a new FC? Is it repairable?

Yes sir, accelerometer enabled in the settings. I reset it, re-flashed it, full chip erased it. Nothing works. I gave up, ordered one on amazon. Thanks for the reply.

I have the same problem on a FrSky Apus MQ60. "Calibrate Accelerometer" is grayed out, event after reflash, restore default settings the drone was delivered with. Accelerometer is enabled. Any idea?

Here's a new one: When I go inverted for more than a moment (for example during a power loop, not a flip or roll), I lose control of the quad. It feels like a failsafe, but there's no evidence of that. I have a Hyperlite F4 FC, (new) Spedix 4-in-1, and TBS Crossfire micro. I recently upgraded to the latest BF w/turtle mode, dynamic filters, etc., but had good flights with it previously. Any advice would be appreciated.

Help!!! I am able to disarm my copter midflight regardless of throttle value. How do fix this? I am using an old cc3d board with ibus input.

There is an option in the Configuration tab that lets you disarm at any throttle position. Disable it.

So I have your flight controller it’s bound to my receiver which is the r9mm and I’m getting stick input in betaflight but when I try to arm it nothing happens the flight controller blinks when I flip the arming switch but nothing happens please help

I got problem with my drone uruav flysky version the arm box won't turn yellow even inside the range, my lowest throttle is 889 min check is default 1050, i try everything in this vid still cant get arm, but when using motor test in beta flight all my 4 motors working normally, im using jumper t8sg v2 plus, can u help me out ?

Go to the CLI and type "status". Look up the Arming Status Flags here: github.com/betaflight/betaflight/wiki/Arming-Sequence-&-Safety MSP and CLI status flag can be ignored. They are there when you are plugged in to USB and in the CLI. If you have only MSP and CLI then just un plug USB and go fly. Other status flags you have to solve different ways.

Are you using PPM, SBUS, iBus, parallel PWM? What receiver is it?

what about when the quad will arm when the flight controller is plugged into Betaflight but not when unplugged? had that issue and I wound up having to swap flight controllers. never figured it out

I could arm with the receiver when plugged in. also, everything looked and responded normally on the receiver tab... oh, another symptom that would happen when the flight controller was not plugged into beta flight, is that when I would plug in the battery, it would make the normal startup jingle, but then make another jingle I've not heard before and of course, hitting the arm switch would do nothing.

everyone, pay special attention to the min_check portion of this video. correctly setting your min_check can GREATLY improve your flight experience by getting rid of the dead zone at the bottom of the throttle!! Thanks for mentioning this Joshua

Adam-g1 Wow, feeling kinda dumb right now. Been playing this game for awhile now and somehow never came across this tidbit. Default Betaflight was at 1100. I've always noticed the dead spot especially on takeoff. Thanks for the heads up to reexamine that portion of the video.

I went for almost two years with no clue about min_check... and the day I read something about it and gave it a try, I felt really sad that I didn't do this earlier. So much better low throttle control doing this!

Its also a great tool to have small angle 180, or disabled acc, for retrieval purposes if you get stuck in a tree. Likely to burn a motor or an ESC, but if you cant get your copter down, it might come in handy to arm it and thrash it around the branches.... Great video as always Josh :D

i tried these stick commands after watching a way to fine tune your quad to eliminate drift. i use a spektrum radio and when i followed the commands, i ended up changing the betaflight profile lol so i went to roll and it was super laxed because it was stock settings not what i expected, and crashed. no harm, no foul just know that if using a spektrum radio those stick commands may not work as indicated.

Not allowing the gyro to calibrate will also prevent arming. The gyro needs a few seconds of no movement for calibration. If it never sees this period of no movement, you won't be able to get it to arm. Only time I've ever really noticed this is on micros (tinywhoop, etc) that I sometimes fly out of my hand. Unless you hold extremely still, it'll never see no movement long enough to calibrate the gyro.

WHAT THE FUCK DOES ARMING DISABLE FLAG 3,16,21 MEAN? I'm about to throw my fpv quad in the trash. FPV is a pain in the dick. I tried to get into it, but I spend most of my time messing around with betaflight trying to get the stupid thing to fly.

Hello sir! I m using hexacopter (pixhawk 2.4.8)..my problem is when i hold my controller elevator for 2 or 3 second, it disarmed by itself.....can u help me with this happen ??

great! you saved a ton of my neves with the info "it dont arm at high cpu load". finally this was the solution to my problem of the day! now i have one other problem left, one of my FCs works only on one of two PCs (connection to betaflight). other FCs work great on both PCs. the normal troubleshooting and driver installation videos don't work, think i have to search more....

Hi everyone and Joshua, I have gone through this whole series and for some reason my quad won't arm. I believe I am in the 1% not covered here. Things I know, stack = iFlight SucceX-D Mini F7 TwinG Stack (F7+40A ESC) Flashed with the latest Betaflight version Remote= dx9 with satellite receiver Quad illustration moves properly in the animation window in Betaflight configuration without battery plugged in indicating board and remote are communicating All motors run when the master switch is elevated with the battery (6s) is plugged in Arming switch, I believe, is set up properly All these have been verified in the CLI window using the 'status' prompt as shown below. Without battery: Arming disable flags: CLI MSP With battery: Arming disable flags: RXLOSS CLI MSP Any help would be greatly appreciated Thank you everyone

I'm not sure why plugging in the battery would stop the FC from seeing the signal from the receiver when it works on usb connection power. Thanks Josh, got my CPU load from 100% down to 9%. Now I was wondering why my quad likes to spin in circles (yaw) when taking off and then correct itself then yaw again a bit then correct itself again and then it doesn’t do it again for a while. So strange! I have an x220 with the fly sky i6

Joshua you are the man! today in 2024 this helped me. For me it was my CPU load it was at 73%. I downed the gyro looptime from 8.0hz to 2hz and CPU utilization went down to 23%. Guess what? my quad arms now :)

Well that solved my problem with arming but ran in another one my pitch is is stuck on 2012 and no matter how much I push the stick or tweak the end points it will not move. Any ideas? Omnibus 3.1.7 Thanks

Hi, my tiny whoop will arm for less than a second and barely spin up the motors. Earlier today I was flying it just fine and when I swapped the battery when I armed it would just flip over. The only thing I changed was the battery. Now it won't even arm fully or at all. I was hoping someone could help me out

I just recently purchased a iflight green hornet 4s......I never realized all that comes with FPV drones. I have binded the receiver and transmitter. When im on betaflight i get no response when i move the gimbals, try and set they aux switches or test the motors. I have flashed the firmware reset the transmitter and re-binded everything and still nothing. Please can you help me out.

THANKS JOSHUA!!! THIS FIXED MY PROBLEM WITH MY NEW LDARC TINY 7X !! I BINDED A WALKERA DEVO 7 WITH SBUS RECIEVER , BUT WASNT ABLE TO ARM THE QUAD , AND IT WAS DE MIN_CHECK BEING TOO LOW ! I DONT KNOW HOW TO CHANGE IT ON MY RADIO , BUT I WILL FIND OUT LATER . THANKS AGAIN BUDDY , YOU ARE AWESOME!

Hi Josh, Im using a IMMERSIONRC EZUHF 8-CHANNEL DIVERSITY RECEIVER EZUHF8DIV with the Race 32 Racing Flight Controller F303 (Deluxe) and aTurnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter in cleanflight I can see all control stick movements throttle pitch yaw ect but none of the AUX channels move when I flick the 4+ toggle switches the turnigy has. any ideas buddy ? appreciate your help in advance.

My xilo jb build was awesome. Worked great... bought a nazgul5 v2 hd... Used same method, but no telemetry on remote and it won't arm with battery... the motors turn wen in Betaflight but disconnect from Betaflight, plug battery in, and no arm... the motors give lil glitch, but that's it... I'm keep trying stuff though...too it works or becomes wall-decor... eitherway, it's useful I suppose...🤦‍♂️🤔🤨

Hey Josh I did every single thing in your video and then double and triple checked again I can't get my flight controller to arm when I plug in the battery the blue light just continues to flash the blue light needs to go off and order for me to arm everything is set correctly is there something that I'm missing

Joshua, ma' man, I just hope you know how helpful you are. I just hope you're not modest and you're taking all the credit you deserve. I bought my drone 4 years ago and i bought parts to finish the setup like... once a year or something so, 4 years later nothing work: betaflight wants me to upgrade the firmware but I remember reading I have a custom board and that's not a good idea, I had to learn what the mixer section is, because all my controls were doing the wrong thing and then the damn thing won't arm). At some point I really thought that I bit more than I can chew, but slowly my drone is coming to life. Thank YOU, Sir!

OK boys, if you're new to this hobby like me and you just got into beta flight let me give you a huge tip. DO NOT PRESS THE RETURN TO DEFAULT BUTTON. It will uninstall everything on your drone...literally. It should have a warning on it or something, it's not like a pc default setting.

Hi Joshua! Would greatly appreciate some help. Looked at a ton of videos - nobody seems to have my issue with FlySky, Eachine and Betaflight. Binding appears to be successful yet when I open Betaflight and connect, and go to the Receiver tab, all settings are at "0" and not color bars exist for Rolle, Pitch, Yaw, Throttle, AUX 1, etc. Have you experienced it or know what is going on? Please help - thank you very much in advance!

Oh yae, this was a needed video. It's magical when that little word 'armed' shows up after a lot of hair pulling. I should keep mine short too -hard to grab. OK, so now I just need to slow this thing down -on to your throttle taming (scaling) vid! -GIVE THIS MAN MONEY -he has a cute kid! -I'll be in the freezer. ---not yours -It's -7 F outside. Dear Joshua please help ! i had my tiny hawk bound to my tx16s, then connected it to beta-flight updated firmware to 4.2, then couldnt add the correct earlier diff all settings so went back to the original ‘diff all’ settings of 4.1. Now the tinyhawk won’t bind to my tx16s, I get a solid blue light but with a red flashing light also ???? Argh this hobby is complicated !!!!! Is there any hope ?

Thank you Joshua for the info. Quick Question though. (I got a meteor65) Been having a weird behavior where I fly my lil drone, but once I drained the battery, recharge, and plug in again, it fails to arm. Checking it on betaflight, it prompts a bunch of errors (like there is no gyro and to select motor protocol) though if I restore my backup file, I could bin and fly again. Dont know what's happening.

Joshua-- I know you are busy-- please, please Help. I just downloaded Betaflight 3.4. Nothing will arm. At the top it says "Arming Disabled". The motor tab shows engines at 1460. It will arm in motors-- not transmitter!! Thanks in advance for your help.

Mr. Bardwell I want to say thank you for your love for the drone world and for all you do to help keep people like me flying. You are always my first go to whenever I have problems. I still don't know a lot but thanks to your videos I`m able to work out my problems. I took up this hobby when my mom passed away and it helped keep my mind right and helped me get through the hardest parts by keeping me occuopied.

Last time I tried betaflight/cleanflight I bricked my rodeo 110 Quadcopter and it wouldn’t work. (Tried all the fixes including flashing the boards elect.) so now I have a rodeo 150. Do I want to risk another £150 on turning my new Quadcopter into a glorified paperweight? No.

@Joshua Bardwell I just wanna say thanks for all the information from just watching your videos has help me LOTS!!!! in my quad build. The issue I was having was the arm switch in betaflight wouldn't go yellow when triggered. Solved that. Then wasn't sure what esc protocol to use .it wouldn't act right in oneshot, multishot or Dshot I wasn't getting all the motor start up tones I would get the first set but not the last.so at the top of the list there was PWM. This worked with my ESC and did the trick I running lumenier BLheli "flycolor" fairy 30a esc

Hello Mr. Bardwell I have a problem I dont understand . I have a qq190 . I bought the frame and then the full power cube with 4 esc boards and vtx. The problem I'm having is arming ... two motors 1&4 wont spin up until around 1500 the other two act normal 1080. When armed I do have a red light on the control board. Cli indicates 1 error , config size 1628 All mins are set right. Do i have esc issues ? Strikes me as odd that it's two motors and on opposing corners. Help please , my head hurts

I figured out how to arm it. (Blade LRX with DX6i).. but the left stick will not respond. Motors will not spin, unless I give input with the right stick. If i move forward, backward, left, or right, then the motors spin. But motors stop spinning as soon as right stick is centered. Please help me Joshua, Horizon Hobby could not figure it out, I've spent countless hours with them on the phone... I've just about given up on this, sadly

Rrrrrrrrrrrrrr... Me again, Ok, Ive watched all the videos, read all I can find, and still can't keep the thing in the air very long -it's a QX65. It's not the throttle I need to tame -it's all the rates. I shouldn't be a total newbee, but I sure fly like one. I'm fine in velocidrone (getting better) but geeeez. I'm sure it's just a lot of practice but, when in stability (level) mode and trying to keep it between the floor and ceiling and yaw a bit, the tiny little constant movements of the throttle stick while yawing is just crazy hard to do -much less keeping track of the other stick (stick movements are in the 1 to-3 or4% of the total movement). Is there a way to tame the whole thing? All the vids say set the PIDs like this but don';t say why, up this and that for more response, or like you- 'leave the stock PIDs'. " Make it go faster, set it up for the ultimate...." NO!!, I want to set it up as docile as it can be so I can fly the damn thing. -and to do this, set up which? the Tx (Qx7) or the RX in betaflight?

This video helped me. My min_check value was too low in Betaflight so couldn't arm my Mobula7. I changed it in Betaflight rather than mucking around with my jumper T8SG (black and silver model). Just seems so easy in Betaflight vs digging into transmitter menus.

If you have Frsky radio equipment and can't get any response in the receiver tab go to the outputs page in the TX and adjust the outputs to +97.7 max and -97.7 min. Go to Grayson Hobby on RU-vid and search for ET125 & QX7 to see how.

Hi, can someone help me with a problem i'm having with my quad? First time builder here, I got all my connections soldered using the UAVFuture's guides found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Avp8MurmeEY.html and here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YNAH4C98Qhs.html But when I plugged in my battery and hit the throttle, nothing happened. In fact, I only got three beeps from the ESC, instead of the normal 5. I watched the entire video, but I am afraid my problem might be even more basic than the material covered above. According to the ESC manual, the arming sequence starts after the first three beeps, is this correct? I have tried using betaflight while my battery is connected, but betaflight disconnects, and the ESC starts beeping in all sorts of codes that aren't even covered in the manual. Could I have gotten a bad ESC or flight controller? Thanks for any advice, and I would love to provide any additional information.

Joshua, Your videos have been amazing, However I have a cypher fv-31, I had a ton of issues getting the ports to open on betaflight but after a few days I got it to program but after all of that I cannot arm the motors, I used your videos and eliminated all flags but still no throttle, all other functions work fine. DO you know of any issues with the cypher fv-31 not arming?

I used this how to vid to help me on a NAZE32 and cleanflight and now I have the biggest grin on my face. keep up the good work lad. And yes NAZE 32 I bought a Flitetest versa copter a few years ago and pretty much gave up. I decided to revisit and im glad I did.

I have a meteor65 and I can't get it to work. I bought it and I could test it. It was fast, I made the binding, I armed and ready. The problem became when I connected it to betaflight for the first time. I did nothing there, but the dron refuses to arm, juist like that. When I press the arm button, the led changes to orange, so its taking the order, but the motors dont spin. It has nothing to do with typical issues like, wrong calibration, not standing in a flat surface, not binded correctly, etc... The quad takes the order, all ranges are correctly set, even I flashed the drone with the same firmware (MATEKF411RX) and it does the same. It is possible that al 4 motors are broken? I've been like 1 week trying to solve this and I cant do nothing. Everything is fine, but the motors refuse to rotate.

it is probably too old, but for me 3 reason is looks like the problem but, even though level limit is correct but arm panel is not highlighted for some reason. Any advice what else can I check?

I have recently built a new quad with mamba f4 stack with included 4in1 esc. Everything looks good in betaflight but it will not let me spin up the motors through betaflight or using my TX, arming switch is set as it should be and the slider is moving on betalfight when i arm/disarm and change other modes. I must be missing something, i know my FC + escs are good as i have have changed out for others and same problem. I only get 3 beeps when connecting the battery and the same 3 beeps when i flick the arm switch? Any suggestions?

after struggling for a full day why a new quad would not arm Thanks to Josh. I checked min_check and discovered it was 2 points too low. a quick set min_check=110 and i am up in the air again!

Thank you very much ! My Copter wont arm, because i setup the receiver min to 1000 mid to 1500 and max to 2000. But i forgot to set min check an max check! Now i set min Check to 1010 and max check to 2010 and see... it works !

I recently bought a eachine wizzard x220 and a flysky remote. I flashed everything and set my settings to yours on the video, but my drone wont arm. There is an error1 : 7% on my screen on the remote. Could you please help.

it's funny how you buy a drone because ypu want to fly it but instead has to sit in front of the computer 99.9% of the time to try to figure out why it doesn't work. i have 3 different quads and i have barley flewn any of them. They NEVER work.......

I have an interesting problem where it arms sometimes but not others. Especially when i use a 4s. It seems that i can arm when usb is pluged but wont arm or take a lot of fiddling to arm if not connected to USB. It seems that the mode light on the fc flashes when i am not allowed to arm. Not sure if this is a gyro calibration issue which takes it a while or what. I also try stick calibrating the gyros and that doesn't work. Any ideas? I have a flip32 f4 special edition fc. The problem seems to happen more on 4s than 3s.
