I visited the location of the Quadrophenia alley scene in Brighton, England. I've always loved The Who, so it was fun to get to visit the alley.

Drowned, and I really like the live version at Royal Albert Hall, when Pete plays it all alone. Pete is, and has always been, my all times favorite guitar player. Saw him live 1982, in London, in a small club, Pete with friends (not with The Who), and it was such a great musical experience for a 16 years old dude. Another favorite song with The Who is 1921. Big thanks Otis for a great video.

Can’t pick a fave, but my first concert was The Who (on their first US tour), opening for Herman’s Hermits, 1967. I was 5, and my father took me, my 10 year old sister, and 13 year old brother. Life was never the same after that.

I am so old I saw the High Numbers in Glasgow on a bill with Lulu and the Luvvers. They were amazing and so different for that time. I remember the charisma of Pete, their r&b covers and at the end, Keith kicking his drums over which for the time was quite shocking. A brilliant group.

Hi Otis, good to see you exploring my old haunt. Fond memories of having you come and play there. I used to work in the council buildings behind that alley and used to cut through almost daily to go grab my lunch in the cafe there. I never did make out with anyone there though and i worked there for 4 years! Hope you're well, Otis.

Hey Otis! Great post. The power and passion of 'Love Reign O'er Me' is tough to beat. 'The Real Me' is one of the finest bass lines in music though...and Daltrey's vocals...Such a good album. One of many examples of Pete Townshend's brilliance...and I didn't even mention Keith Moon. Just stellar stuff.

Only today's modernity could have provided the video presented today. Back in my day hand held 16mm film was the tool available for this kind of documentary. Good job Otis, and thank you. :) Edit: In my past 16mm was high tech for the independent filmmaker and without built in sound and visual stabilization. 'The Times They Are a-Changin' Bob Dylan

When you filmed one of your last videos on Brighton Beach, of course I thought of Quadrophenia. The setting looked just like the photos in the LP booklet. Very cool to see other locations. They actually named it Quadrophenia Alley! The Who were the second band I got into after the Beatles and I appreciate them now more than ever. A very unique band. No one else sounds like them. Don't know if I can pick just one song, but my favorites include "Cut My Hair," "The Punk meets the Godfather" and "5:15."

Dylan and Me……QUADROPHENIA One of the LAST RECORDS I acquired while I was still living at my parent in the ORANGE ROOM was QUADROPHENIA by THE WHO. I had just turned 20 and my Mom brought it home from a garage sale. I had seen the album cover before but never heard the record. As I played it over and over, I fell in love with its songs and the concept. Jimmy in the story, is still living at home...LIKE ME!!!. He was searching for himself...LIKE ME!!!!! He was experimenting with Drugs....LIKE ME. It spoke to me. The perfect TEENAGE scenario. Heres the lyrics to the song that really spoke to me: CUT MY HAIR Why should I care If I have to cut my hair? I've got to move with the fashion Or be outcast I know I should fight But my old man he's really alright And I'm still living at home Even though it won't last Zoot suit, white jacket with side vents Five inches long I'm out on the street again And I'm leaping along I'm dressed right for a beach fight But I just can't explain Why that uncertain feeling is still Here in my brain The kids at school Have parents that seem so cool And though I don't want to hurt them Mine want me their way I clean my room and my shoes But my mother found a box of blues And there doesn't seem much hope They'll let me stay Zoot suit, white jacket with side vents Five inches long I'm out on the street again And I'm leaping along I'm dressed right for a beach fight But I just can't explain Why that uncertain feeling is still Here in my brain Why do I have to be different to them? Just to earn the respect of a dance hall friend We have the same old row, again and again Why do I have to move with a crowd Of kids that hardly notice I'm around I work myself to death just to fit in I'm coming down Got home on the very first train from town My dad just left for work He wasn't talking It's all a game And inside I'm just the same My fried egg makes me sick First thing in the morning I was 20, my dad really didn't like my long hair. He was in the military and the "wartime coat" shown on the album cover was what my Dad wore to the Air National Guard every day of my life. When you're 20, you're trying to fit in at school and meet new people. I was beginning to wear more flambouant clothes and sometimes make up at gigs. I was experimenting with drugs and actually, let go from a job because a co worker told the boss I had smoked pot the day before at work. ( although, he did too ) I was growing but unsure what my next step should be. That Uncertain feeling”. I know I should fight But my old man he's really alright And I'm still living at home Even though it won't last" I knew that the time was coming soon that I needed to leave THE ORANGE ROOM and find myself. That “uncertain feeling” was in my brain too. The lyrics of Cut My Hair reinforced my feelings. My Dad and I were different people and growing in different ways, BUT...as the song said, my OLD MAN he's really alright....and I'm still living at home, even though it won't last!!!! The song still brings back that feeling from 1979 in MY ORANGE ROOM. Fast forward 33 years. My son Dylan is 20 years old and still living with us in Bellevue Illinois. Him and I have had a few incidents where we did not see eye to eye...let's leave it at that. By now, I'm the Dad!!!! Life has reversed the tables and now my son was probably feeling the same feelings and anxieties as I was at his age!!!!! With all this happening, I found out that THE WHO were getting back together to play the QUADROPHENIA album in its entirety in Chicago the coming Novermber. This would have been 2012. I NEEDED to take Dylan to see this show with me. I burnt a CD of the album and told him to listen to it and I'd get tickets to the show. He did listen and said he loved it!!!! The stage was set. I guess the point I'm trying to make here is the symbiotic nature of the event. He was in the exact place of time in his life where I was was when I first heard Quadrophenia in 1979! I'm happy to say that the concert was AMAZING and Dylan loved it VERY MUCH. When the song, CUT MY HAIR was played, the hairs on my arms stood on end. I looked over at Dylan and he was LOOKING AT ME!!!! Connection!!!!! We were thinking the same thing as the lyrics were booming out through the ALLSTATE ARENA!!! Why do I have to be different to them? Just to earn the respect of a dance hall friend We have the same old row, again and again Why do I have to move with a crowd Of kids that hardly notice I'm around I work myself to death just to fit in Dylan was learning at 20, about fitting in. But why bother? He was his own person. Thats OK! Just like putting on Moody Blues to a room of friends. He KNEW it was good music!!! Fuck them if they don't get it! I remember feeling that way at 20. The song continued: The kids at school Have parents that seem so cool And though I don't want to hurt them Mine want me their way I clean my room and my shoes But my mother found a box of blues And there doesn't seem much hope They'll let me stay So close to home. I felt the same way at 20. I know Dylan did too. But it was during this line that our eyes met and it still gives my chills: I've got to move with the fashion Or be outcast I know I should fight But my old man he's really alright And I'm still living at home Even though it won't last I'm STILL LIVING AT HOME...EVEN THOUGH IT WONT LAST. Our eyes met....We looked back at the stage and enjoyed the rest of the concert. Dylan left our home the next Spring. He was ready to spread his wings and fly on his own. He was 20 years old. The same age I was when I left my home...THE ORANGE ROOM and my parents house. He and I were a lot alike. I was happy that he found someone to love him like we did. I'm so happy he met his girlfriend, Ashley and felt the rush of life on his own! I love you Dylan.

Someone heckled Neil Young on the stage way back in the day, yelling from the audience as he did an acoustic set, "all your songs sound the same!" and Neil fired IMMEDIATELY back "It's all one song, man. It's all one song." So yeah Quadrophenia, The Who, "Maximum R&B...." Rock and Roll, Mods, Rockers, Neil Young, Pete, Otis Redding, Little Richard, The Killer, you name it, and you know who I'm talking about Otis, so many many more to list off from the heart... it's all one song. And the Future..... is Unwritten. Mahalo plenty brothers and sisters. One Love. All I ever had, these songs of freedom. Not Fade Away. My old friend the blues. All my love's in vain. He gives us all his love. She loves you yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah. Oh, Maybelline why can't you be true? Why don't you love me like you used to do? I got the Lovesick Blues. (But guess what?) All the flattop cats have their dungaree dolls and they're headed to the gym for the sock hop ball. The joint's really jumping, the place is goin' wild, the music really sends me I dig the crazy styles and I'm READY. Like Jimmy in the alley, we're all ready for the magic to happen just once, tonight, now, sooner. Count 'em off Dee Dee. On a count of four... FOUR!

I was an extra in Q and the alley and the beach front scenes were filmed in May 78 Brighton. The scene where Sting is the busboy is the Grand Hotel Brighton (which later had the IRA bomb in 84 and I was DJ there in the hotel Disco Midnight Blue late 80s) Had a cuppa with him on film breaks quite a dry down to earth guy quite softly spoken remember clearly of him talking fondly about his previous band No Exit and that he really wasn’t sure if his new bands name would work…..Police..) The scene where they are on their scooters looking down on Brighton is in fact looking down on Eastbourne some 20 miles along the coast. On the beach front scenes on the main road literally where this video begins some big errors were made by the director/unit team. All the signage of that time May 78 remained so if you look closely the cinema is advertising the films showing then and the credit card adverts which didn’t even exist in the mid sixties and if you look closely you will more things 70s than 60s in these scenes. Many of the actors and extras pointed this out but were told it would be fixed in editing but of course never did it was a great shame. The rockers was a term created by the press and the on the ground they were known as the Greasers. Q alley is one of many of the alleyways in Brighton known as the Lanes, this being the smallest. Hope this insight helps😎
