Quake Champions Random Tips #3 (In-depth Strafe Jumping) 

Signed up for this after the announcement at E3. Thanks for these tips! I’ve been an Unreal Tournament 2004 guy myself, but now is a good time as any to get into Quake.

Thanks for being more in-depth! I'm new to quake Champions but I've been watching for awhile.

What you should have mentioned doing the around and around in dm6 is that for the turns, you don't immediately press jump again as you do going straight. instead, you take a little step in between jumps to do the turn, then you do a new jump. It took me a long time to figure it out myself because it is always overlooked in tutorials.

nice to have pretty good players giving tips, with a lot of players that came its pretty important we have a well lit "welcome" sign.

As I mainly play TF2, Quake was easy to adapt to... combat wise. Strafing is completely different, and I'm glad you made this video to cover this topic. Also, rocket jumping is *sort of different* as different angles is needed and air strafing is more restricted than TF2 (yes, I know of Sorlag's Passive Ability but I don't have access to him, and I rather prefer Ranger's less-self damage ability). I've played Quake Live for a week's worth, and I just came back to Quake Champions after that update with bots, since the last time I've played was a year ago, where, to me, queue times was 5 minutes minimum and I don't think there were Australian servers at the time. *And also because of you Zy.*

Just playing, spectating, paying attention and watching youtube tutorials is a good way to learn.

I just bought the champions pack for $20 on sale, one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. The amount of fun a few friends and I have had playing sacrifice in private matches over the past few days alone would have been worth the money.

thank you for another tutorial. it would be nice if you described: movement and jumping on ladders, "double jumping" on barriers and similar technique but only when you touch edges of vertical geometry while strafe jumping. sorry, I forgot real names for this things.

Thank you! I was definitely one of those people who thought i needed to be at max speed all the time although i've been mostly doing the slower forward and jump thing. I still dont get what air control is though... it looks the same to me, despite being a sorlag user (i just use the ability as a panic button)

Been playing the later releases the last few weeks and the game is tight. Was not super impressed with some of the beta updates a few months ago, but the last few releases are very solid, it's a good time to pick the game up, very polished now and plenty of maps.

One important thing that no one ever mentions in these videos, DON'T hold jump. Let go off it during the airtime, if you hold it, you accelerate slower. Sure it is obvious to people paying attention, but these are made for beginners and beginners certainly won't notice it.

0:53 I think the flick movements mostly apply to the idea of circle jumping (basically just doing an initial whip motion to get an initial accel boost), where you have to get that initial speed boost from stand still. You do have to flick a bit for sure on tight maps with lots of turns in order to get the acceleration after stopping briefly to make sharp change to direction you are heading. However the actual strafe jump part, when you are already mid jump with lots of space to work with, you actually don't need sudden flicks. You can do very smooth and minor mouse drift in the corresponding strafe direction to get accel. It's just that there is a sweet spot where you get optimized accel, and that sweet spot (an angle offset from your current heading/direction of movement) changes/increases as your velocity increases. So say if you heading down the bridge on blood covenant, as you go from 500 to 600 to 700 ups, you have to look a bit further to either side in order to keep accelerating. In that sense, if you are strafe jumping by alternating directions (aka full-beat, iirc), you do have to do slightly bigger flicks each time to keep looking into the sweet spot. Just want to clear that up based on my own experience with strafe jumping

Jumping timing and where to look with the mouse is 2 completly different things, you can still strafejump while changing angle between jumps, sync between jump and flick has nothing to do with gaining speed :) Video is really easy to understand though, good stuff for beginners.

Do you have any recommendations for something that feels like a shorter Clutch 2? I just got mine and it's almost the perfect shape, it just feels a bit big.

Strafe jumping was pretty simple to get into, since I learned to bhop a bit on CSGO.

¨What i love about this game is that the strafe jumping i learned way back in Action Quake 2 still works the same here. Its like riding a bike :D so easy to jump in and blast some fools with rockets. Just had to buy the whole game, its on sale now.

Hey Rocket Ninja. Great video but I feel that including a camera angle of what your hands are doing like you have in your rocket jump tutorials would help people understand it in a single viewing. Especially bunny hopping. That would make this video the ultimate for this domain for years to come. Some people get way too technical with this kind of stuff but you have the right balance. Great job!

With CPMA/Anarki/Sorlag you can also just hold W and do turns (easier than doing A/D when you want to go backwards like Vo0)

Nyx seems like a good champion for strafe jumping, if you can land wall jumps where normal characters will run into the wall and lose speed.

Question, I've noticed my mouse has been firing when it hits the mat too hard. I have a rival 600 and the thinner qck+ pad, I'm not sure it its the model or rather a faulty copy. I'd love to find out

I was wondering. I have hands which are 10cm wide but only 18 long. should I be using a large mouse. The problem with medium mice is the side of my hand goes into cramp meaning I have to adjust my grip to the point where the right side of my hand is no longer on the mouse. what would you recomend

Hey Zy, I've got a possibly challenging question for ya. I just got enough currency for my first champ purchase and I'm looking for something with a high skill ceiling! I'm leaning towards Slash or Visor, or perhaps even Anarki or Sorlag to go with my extensive counter-strike bhop experience (but it also feels like I'm already at Anarki's limit having played him during the free rotation). Who's your recommendation for highest skill ceiling, and who would you recommend for racking up the frags in a game of DM with mates? Cheers for the vids!

how do you maintain your speed, i easily go to 500-600 but always crash into smothing. how do you make these smooth turns while keeping your speed.

Hey zy, I was recently in japan (I’m Aussie) and saw a really unique mouse for sale there. It is made by one of the senior marketing officers in the SteelSeries japan district, he left them and created the mouse. Similar shape to the Sensei and very comparable to the xrtfy mice, main difference is the omron’s And 3360. Only just got it but it feels amazing in my hand and has the same rubber texture as the rival 600 on the shell. I don’t think you will be able to get it but just telling you in case they make more mice in the future- Conpany is RAY and model is the Pawn rm- 3360.

If every champ can do this then what is the point of the passive of that lizard guy? It says that he gets faster if he jumps forward but this kinda looks the same to me.

Zy there is something on my mind for a while. I don't know if you have ever tried this but my keyboard sounds really different on different surfaces. When it's on a mat like a mouse pad it will be muffled a bit and is quieter. When I place it on a solid wooden table, it became a lot louder. I don't know how it works but please check to see if it's just me.

Hey Zy, got any tips for strafe jumping up stairs? Whenever you go up stairs in the video you seem to just sorta "Slide" up them but when i try to go up stairs i have to mash the space key as fast as i can to keep jumping or i just slow down to walking speed. What am i missing?
