Man, it's fascinating to see the earliest version of 2fort. Despite it being as primitive as it gets, you can clearly see the rough level design is already there.
@Tickenest
@Tickenest 4 года назад
Hah! This is 2fort5, which was *not* the first version of the map. This is actually several revisions in. Most notably, 2fort4 was conceived so as to be defensible by only 4 players. Naturally, when 8v8 or 10v10 matches would take place on it, it was a little cramped. This version opens things up a little, although I'd argue that it's still too cramped inside the bases for larger matches.

@randomprecision while that story does appear to be true, I don’t think a wad from 2005 is the same as the one your speaking of Edit: actually no, that wad was just reposted there on doomworld in 05 but was originally posted in 94. However that wad is not the same as the one that possibly inspired 2fort as ben fletcher was the one who made the wad of inquiry which can be found here www.doomworld.com/files/file/4590-fortresswad/

The action took place in 1998 and was recorded at the time in a .qwd file, which isn't a video file but basically recreates the match action in the game engine later. I merely replayed the demo 12 years later and had ezQuake running at a much higher resolution.

Holy shit this version of 2fort is so much better than TF2's. It's twice as big so not every room is a tiny hallway just waiting to be filled with Sentries and explosives, there are health and ammo packs in at least 3 more places than in TF2, and the layout is just different enough that the sewers and tertiary resupply room actually serve a purpose instead of being useless detours. I get that the bigger and more spacious layout is because the original TF is a much faster game and every class has obnoxious amounts of grenades available, but every TF2 map since the original 6 (if not the original 2) has been built around being less cramped and spammy, with bigger stretches of terrain and multiple flanking routes so every class has a fair shot of doing their job. It's been nearly a decade and I don't think anyone - even amateur mapmakers - have given 2fort the simple x2 upscale that it so desperately needs to be a half-decent map. It's really kind of sad considering that, as far as I know, 2fort was the first Team Fortress map *ever.*

Being used to TFC, It’s surprising to see a Scout not bunnyhopping and conc jumping.
@Tickenest
@Tickenest 4 года назад
This was before bunnyhopping was widespread, and due to how the effects of concussion grenades were implemented in TF 2.8/2.9, there's no way you could use them for more than the quick initial boost (concussion effects were basically that the player would be jerked a small distance in random directions a few times a second, resetting your air speed at the same time.) I prefer it this way because I think that the game balanced gets ruined when you've got a few classes that are WAY faster than the others. You might as well be playing a different game.

***** I happened to have the .qwd file (the demo file) for one reason or another. Some I've found on the internet, most I've been sent by one sympathetic party or another. Then I just play back the demo in ezQuake, perform a video capture, chop it into pieces, and upload to RU-vid. :)

Tickenest Still cool :) I wasn't around for QTF but it's more dead then TFC which is sad, it looks like fun.

Hi, I did an interview with a developer and this game came up... can I use piece of the footage from this in my video? Of course, full credit will be given and I'll link back to this video. Thanks.

How come the gun doesn't move when you move around? It just stays in its position.
@Tickenest

I'm not sure, actually. I think it's a setting that, in ezQuake, defaults to no weapon bob.

It's strange to think that the very server you recorded in is older than me. Plus, i wonder what those people who played with you are doing nowadays

I bet several of them have children by now and possibly one or two are dead.

Yes! Fun fact: the "2fort" series of maps, though best known as maps on which to screw around, are actually fully functional CTF maps.

The game is Quake and the Team Fortress mod. Quake is available for purchase and I believe if you download the Team Fortress mod it includes installation instructions.
