Quality, Affordable Film Emulation: CinePrint 16 Review for Davinci Resolve

Emulating a film look on digital is tricky but I've been really impressed with ‪@TomBolles‬ 16mm Cineprint powergrade, you can find it here:
www.tombolles.net/cineprint16
It's only $60 and is node-based, so you actually have to get familiar with Davinci Resolve to use it (a good thing, I want to be a better colorist)! I think it does a great job with faking that film look on digital and the grain, halation, etc. look great to my untrained eye. However, one caveat to the price that I didn't consider before. I believe you will need the full version of Davinci Resolve because this power grade utilizes Davinci's built-in grain effect (and maybe other effects I'm not thinking about). There are other options out there like Dehancer Pro, Filmconvert, and Davinci's built in Halation effect. But Dehancer is $399, Filmconvert seems like more of a LUT pack, and the Halation effect only gets you part way there.
Camera used: Lumix S5 in V-Log mode. Lenses: Contax Zeiss MMJ 50mm 1.7 and 28mm 2.8

definitely agree with you on the fact that it's a complete node tree is huge. i have filmconvert which is decent, but there aren't too many options with altering your look. i've been avoiding using the node tree since i've switched over to davinci and this is great for learning it.

Okay, one expense I didn't factor in here, which could be a dealbreaker for you. I believe you will need the full version of Davinci Resolve to take full advantage of this. The powergrade has grain node that uses Davinci's built in grain, which is something that's only available in the full version of Resolve. My guess is that the overall powegrade would still work in the free version, but grain (and perhaps a few other nodes?) wouldn't be available. You could layer a free grain you download on top if you wanted.

Thanks! If Noise reduction and grain nodes are disabled everything works with the lite version, thankfully :)

Thanks! This was a Lumix S5 shot in v-log. But I’ve also messed around with it without v-log and you can get some pretty good results that way too! It is 10-bit so that probably helps haha. Also used a Contax Zeiss 28mm and 50mm which helps a bit to make it a little softer.

Hi :) once you purchase cine 16 can you use it on a demo version of Da vinci resolve as I haven't bought da vinci yet but would like to buy and use cine print 16. Best,Jamal

Hi! What some commenters have told me is that the Noise Reduction and Grain are the 2 nodes that won't work, so you can disable those and everything else should work. If you still want grain you could try downloading a 16mm grain video (lots of free ones out there) to put on top and then playing around with some different screen modes like "Soft Light". Noise Reduction's not a big deal if the footage isn't noisy to begin with.

is it hard on the workstation hardware? I have doubts that my computer can that many nodes all at ones tbh
@obscurity_films
@obscurity_films Год назад
At the time I made this I was working with a 2019 Macbook Pro. I would say I couldn't always play back things in real time with the nodes on. But tbh, I don't think that's a big deal as you can easily toggle all the nodes on and off with Shift+D in Davinci. As far as rendering, it did took a little longer, but I don't think that's really a big factor. Coming from Premiere, I would say Davinci was still faster at rendering, even with the nodes.

Do you still feel the need to use a Pro mist filter?
@obscurity_films
@obscurity_films 2 года назад
I haven't been using the Pro mist filter much anymore as I try to use my vintage lenses as much as possible now and I feel they have an organic, soft look already. But if I am using my kit lens for something I'd consider it.

Regarding that you exposed at tungsten….Should you normally set the white balance for 5600 for this emulation then?
@obscurity_films
@obscurity_films 2 года назад
Hmm. That is a good point I hadn’t really considered tbh. I typically still change the white balance as I’m shooting for the environment, but if you wanted to treat it more like shooting film then your white balance would be determined by the film stock and wouldn’t change. I haven’t changed the way I’m shooting because of it, I just play with power grade it until I get a look I like, and sometimes warm it up or cool it down.

Hi, is it only available for the Studio version?
@obscurity_films
@obscurity_films Год назад
Hi. I'm planning on making a video about this soon, but the short version is that it MOSTLY works with the free version as well, except for a few nodes. The things that are missing are the film grain, halation....and at least another feature that I can't remember. You could try to add film grain with a free overlay.
