What are your thoughts on using a camera with an APSC sensor? Been considering upgrading to the FX3, but the FX30 is super appealing considering the price...
Ain't nothing wrong with an APS-C sensor! I had the Fuji X-T3 before this and really enjoyed it. I mainly ditched it because it didn't have IBIS and I wanted to use my vintage lenses handheld (ironic because I've been using a lot of tripod lately). Most of the movies shot on film that we know and love were shot on Super 35 which is basically the same sensor size. I'd say a big pro to APS-C is more affordable options for lenses. Pros of full frame are letting more light in and greater depth of field at wider focal lengths. So if you're shooting a lot of low light it might be worth considering (but also Sony is known to be great in low-light so it might not matter).
Oh, the other thing I would say is battery life! No idea what that’s like on the FX30. Honestly functionality stuff like that is maybe the biggest factor for me these days. I hate changing batteries every 30-40 minutes and don’t want to deal with an elaborate rig. I usually get 3 or so hours out of my small S5 battery.
Sorry to hear this one didn't work out for you. I suspect that there's a reason why they always advise low budget filmmakers to stick to simple concepts, like very few locations and actors, to keep the cost and complications down. Maybe concentrating on good story, dialogue and actors could help. Sometimes, simplicity is key. I've just made a short film that's mainly dialogue, but hopefully interesting to watch. Anyway, don't lose your creativity, there's always a next time.
Thanks! This actually feels so long ago now haha. I’m currently over halfway through shooting a new feature, and am actually making a short film version of this project (with a bunch of changes to make shooting easier). Simplicity is definitely huge, and something I definitely still struggle with. Trying to thread that needle between simplicity and pushing myself towards challenging things I’m interested in (like VFX). Thanks for watching, I will check out your film soon!
Haha thanks bro. I am currently working on a new anthology feature film with 4 stories, and I’ve shot 2 of them so far! And actually this film that I gave up on will be one of the stories! It will look much different than the original idea and much shorter, but still the same basic premise and main characters!
just found your channel, looks great - i am studying filmmaking and hoping to shoot my first short film in the next month... thank you for content and sharing your journey. Very inspiring and informative. thanks !
Great video! One thing I noticed (even as a kid, I've been a Star Wars fan forever) was the difference in movement and cinematography between the original trilogy and the prequels. You're right that setting yourself a limit: keeping camera movements fixed to a tripod, you can also think better about your composition. I also notice the difference between the frenetic photography of The Force Awakens with a lot of movement, dollys and quick cuts, versus a calmer composition and less movement like The Last Jedi had. I think that is another good topic to compare, because in 2 films from the same trilogy, you can notice the difference in approach between 2 different directors (JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson). Great analysis, good luck with your film!
Thanks! That's a great insight between TFA and TLJ! I might visit that at some point in the future, tbh the new trilogy still bums me out a bit. Mostly because of the total lack of consistency between the films haha.
Thanks for sharing your insights! This is really helpful for my 3d animations especially that scene from starwars with r2d2 you took as an example for the tension you feel between a static shot which for me was kind of scary when the camera rests on the tripod and when it changes to shaking handheld movements to represent the pov of the creature.
First of all thank you for making this video. You made some excellent points and it was all well thought out. Most of these films I had never heard of so I feel motivated to check them out. I thought for sure "El Mariachi" would have made the list but that's ok, not the end of the world. Honestly I don't understand where all the praise for "Creep" comes from. I watched it twice to see if there was something I missed but found myself bored out of my mind both times. On a positive note the sequel was better in my opinion. Again thanks for the video.
Hi, I have a question regarding my camera, Panasonic HC-V180. What setting do i have to choose in Dehancer? Source, Camera, Vendor, Format? I cant find information on the internet about it.
At the very least, this band should've been as big as The 1975. So bummed they never took off like they deserved. Maybe the future will bring them greater success if they ever release more music.
Filmconvert will have halation coming November 20th. It's downloadable as a trial right now. So maybe for people who already own FIlmconvert, Dehancer Lite + Filmconvert might do the trick. :)
Thanks! Dehancer is doing a lot. I'm planning on making a video of my workflow at some point, when I get into post-production on the movie I'm currently making.
The beginning of writing can be such a struggle! I'm in the starting stages of my next feature script, and in the past the vomit draft method has worked well for me, but this time I find myself gravitating towards the card method. I'll have to give Milanote a try!
Thanks for sharing. Speaking from experience, I wouldn't rule out a "vomit draft" with the approach to just writing it in a "stream of conscience", unfiltered way. It's a great tool to parse interesting ideas, especially because you're approaching it intuitively rather than conceptually. Letting it out with no concern, worry, judgment, with regard to a vomit draft will surprise you. You can generate actions, dialogues, concepts, ideas etc. your conceptual mind would never of thought of. It really works for me. Can't wait to see more, man. All the best. :)
I like this approach! I’m not sure if it would work for me personally to see it through all the way, but I’m sure a lot of interesting material to work with would come out of it!
@@obscurity_films oh sure, it’s just a draft to see if there’s anything interesting to move forward with to an actual first draft. Hope it helps. You got this.
