You nailed it when you said why this one doesn't work as well as the original; the fact we recognise a lot of the actors and the overall look just appears too clean. I also think that a lot of the positioning of actors is too clearly staged (like standing perfectly so we can see everyone talking) and sometimes the camera work is that super shaky cam to create tension at times when there's nothing much going on and a camera operator would be able to keep it still. I guess this version was more staged all throughout whereas Rec had more of a "just go with it" attitude to it all with the actors and camera work, to create a more realistic effect. Found footage films should always look and sound rough... basically the opposite of Cloverfield.

Honestly I think in a strange way the language barrier works to REC’s advantage, it really feels like the chaotic final moments of someone in another country where we don’t understand exactly what is going on, whereas this is very much a dramatisation of a violent outbreak. If you showed me both without context I’d be more willing to believe REC was real.

Doug Jones is an awesome guy. My grandmother worked at ball state university when he was a student there. She would invite some students to her house for dinner. I was too young to remember meeting him but grandma always said he was "such a nice young man". Very cool.

I once read a review in which both [•REC] and Quarantine were compared, and it said something like “Quarantine has great lighting, really nice camera work, known actors and a nice set... and that’s why [•REC] is a million times better”. And I burst out laughing and totally agreeing with that statement! I just can’t appreciate Quarantine, not because it’s not original (many remakes turned out good, despite what people think about remakes in general) but because it totally ruins what was so crucial and important in [•REC], it feels like an absolute betrayal of the original’s intentions. I don’t know, it may be just me Totally unrelated fun fact that no one asked lol: when I was 13, I actually went to the building in Barcelona where [•REC] was shot and I can't even describe what my little cinemaniac heart felt that day. So, the fact that Quarantine was shot in a built set makes me facepalm even harder

I watched this one first when I was in high school, because I didn't know Rec existed! Went back years later and watched Rec, and Quarantine doesn't even come close to that level of claustrophobia and terror.
