People like yourself and Paul are hands down the best people to learn from in this hobby

If everyone in the hobby followed his methods, alot less fish would have to suffer and die! Great guest

Paul remind me of the saltwater version of Father Fish. I love the methodology.

Not sure how I feel about this one. I’ve done the no QT/good nutrition method for years with total success. Fed well and no issues. But I’ve also recently experienced velvet wipe out thousands of $$ of fish within days. Many of which could’ve lived well over a decade. It only takes one of those experiences to really question things. I currently QT any new fish out of respect to my current fish. I don’t think doing such a stringent QT that it kills a high percentage of fish is advisable. Just as I don’t think dumping and praying you’re feeding well enough is advisable either.

I like Paul, he seems like a fun guy to talk to, but I’m skeptical of his “methods”. I’m not sure he understands the whole correlation =/= causation thing. I think his tank is likely survival of the fittest. If you look more into his tank and listen to the whole talk there’s some details left out of the “50 year old tank” (which is actually multiple tanks). It makes a fun story, but can be dangerous for people who think “works for this guy, I’m going to try it!” I’ll stick with my QT process for my animals.

Immunity is a numbers game. Any living organism can survive when exposed to a pathogen so long as the organism's immune system can overwhelm the invading pathogen with bigger numbers. The problem in a tank is the fish are trapped with the replicating parasite in a few hundred gallons or less. He might be right, the fish in the ocean may be immune, but the fish in our tanks don't enjoy the dilution factor that those in the ocean do. I'm not saying quarantining is the answer (but should be considered), but a fish's immune system is not infinite and will get overwhelmed if exposed to a high enough number of parasites. Feeding nutritious food will also bolster the immune system, so that does help.

I can see how parasites can be kept in check, but I do wonder how his fish would handle protozoan velvet if it were introduced? The tank transfer method could be the best quarantine solution for maintaining beneficial bacteria. In human health, exposure to protozoans like malaria and giardia don’t seem to do us any good.

Man if I used his arguments in court the judge would have my neck. Prefacing every statement with I think? “Counsel I don’t care what you think. What is your legal argument?” I would be held in contempt of court for wasting the judges time.

I apologize if I come off as a little abrasive and do so with respect when I say this. First the fish in his tank look like they are mostly juveniles and those of us who have gone through any type of outbreak know for a fact that not quarantining fish puts the rest of them at risk. While I don't doubt some of the nutrition things hes talking about might be true getting a wipeout and going fallow for 3 months is way worse. If the fish we get can't get through quarrantine , they are unlikely to survive anyway. That is just facts. Also breaking down a tank filled with softies is not the same when having to break one down filled with thousands of dollars of sps. The best way is to allow the fish to settle in a qt tank for a bit until they can recover from any stress before medicating them.

This is what I've always talked about. But I get hate mail from all these quarantiners that keep killing their fish over and over.

i don’t think he’s completely wrong. i have had fish die even after being in QT for over a month. lived well for a month, and had an ich while in the display. it killed off some fishes but not all. and i think it may have been caused by putting in under stress.
