I grew up in Leeds, not far from Quarry Hill Flats (Torre Road) and went to St. Charles' RC school too in the 60's with my younger brother Rowly. We had mates in Quarry Hill and I have great memories playing there. This was a lovely time that I'll not forget, thank you for sharing this :)
I lived in Jackson House at number 80 on the top floor and loved the experience at the time. I remember we had a cat called Ginger who would walk on the narrowbar on the balcony. He must have slipped off around six times and then went down lags splayed out as he glided to the ground. Five minutes later he swas outside the door meowing to come in. I can remember counting down his nine lives at the time. think we got to three left. Had loads of mates and we seemed to play outside all the time. . Sundays was a day all the different ages played football in the central aarea on the tarmac type surface . I remember Peter Gumby playing for theolder teams, He later went onto be a proffesional and was a coach at Leeds United for a long time. If I remember correctly we also had a piped in radio. I went to Christ Church infants. We left then to go live up Stoney Rock in Burns Street and I moved to St Stephens school. All the friendships I made I lost but as kids do I made lots of new friends on the local rec. One thing I remember to this day was moving from a flat with a toilet to one that was outside in the yard and shared with next door. We also had no bath and we had a tin one hung on the cellerhead. We had to put it in the kitchen and fill it with a pipe connected to a Maxol water heater. It wasnt a problem until I got to about 13 and at that stage played a lot of rugby coming home caked with mud and having to get bathed whilst everyone walked through the kitchen. Once finished I had to pull the bath to the back door and pour it into the yard at the back and swill it down. How lucky are children now but somehow it really makes you appreciate where you are now and you seem to value things much more. Really character building times without a doubt.I would not change them at all. This is a great video and brought it all back to me. Thank you for producing it.
Hi Brian I thoroughly enjoyed reading what you wrote mate. I live in yeadon and now Guiseley but I worked around Leeds center and Beeston area.. Quarry hill was a place people mentioned often in conversation... You must have had a good life... People really do not realise do they? What our elders had and what we have now. I am only 45 so a little young for the time's talking about but it is great to receive your memories thank you.
OMG remember these flats so well. I and some kids lived in Saxton Gardens not far from Quarry Hills, we had little gangs not like gangs today. We'd go to Quarry Hills, I left 1972 and now live in California but remember some good times and not so good times, then Quarry Hills started to get really run down, I mean run down, but lots of memories of Good O'L Leeds
Loved this video - my dad (who is now dead) worked on the construction in the 1930's and used to tell us about the waste disposal system and all the community facilities etc. I was sad when I read all the negative comments previously because he had thought it was wonderful so its great to hear such positive comments from the people who actually lived there..
Dont listen to the idiots of todays generation there is too many people who dont realise what previous generations have done and gone through for us to live how we do, although the government ruin everything they couldn't foresee and do anything about that.

@@jackwatson3944The first ever moving picture (now known as a video) was done in leeds, had the inventor not had been murdered it would be the hollywood of today. we had battle of leeds when the king was in the city centre. We was the worlds leading manufacturer of clothes, sheets etc. its gone down hill over the years due to the foreign cunts.
Think He got that figure from some sources who count the City of Leeds (proper) which is about 450000, but That figure doesn’t include places like Pudsey and Morley etc, so The 750000 figure is more appropriate I agree, it’s suprisingly hard to actually measure most cities sizes funnily enough

I heard that about a quarter of a million! It was three quarters of a million 50 years ago. Also, Leeds is the fourth biggest city in the UK, not often recognised as such!
@@michelformikasomeone who has a jacket with a hood on? They are pulled over the face as far as possible to make them look threatening and intimidating. I love the Leeds that I grew up in but I bet it’s not the same now.
