Another video following the build of my quarter scale R/C model.
This session covers the creation of the canopy mould or plug. I am no expert, and quite frankly made a few errors making the plug. I hope it will still work out okay.
Join me as I blunder my way along this steep learning curve.....

That Canopy is going to be a masterpiece Danny, I was interested to hear your comments about having to declare the fact that certain parts of the model build have been contracted out when entering a scale model competition. I've always been a staunch supporter of doing it all yourself. There is always going to be somebody who is better at certain type of model building operation than you are but, to me, nothing beats the satisfaction and enjoyment you get from a personal scratch-built model in its entirety. Cheers Paul

Thanks Paul, it probably wouldn't amount to much of a penalty, but IMO if the judge sees a great big list of things you didn't make then you are on a back foot. I am on a huge back foot because the model originally started from a Jerry Bates design.. But like you I really do enjoy the problem solving of making it all yourself. I feel a jack of all trades and a master of none.

Excellent video Danny - you are certainly making great progress on this build. Look forward to seeing the results of the vac forming process!

Great result, well worth the effort ultimately I am sure. There will be a long line of avid builders queueing for canopies, which may make it all worthwhile. 🤞

Not sure the mould will last too long, but you never know, nobody does an accurate canopy, and that wont change if this doesn't fit! Thx for the support Geoff really appreciate it.

nice work Denny!....your glassing skills are far superior to mine but I am getting a much needed education and some really good tips from your process. Thanks, Tim

That plug turned out beautiful. That is one big piece to vac form at once without a professional set up. Since you are making a frame. I'd think you could vac form the from and rear curved pieces and just drape a flat piece over the middle part. Using a heat gun to persuade it to keep its shape. I was able to make a 1/3 Cup windshield that way. How ever you proceed, I look forward to seeing how it turns out. BTW, the way you work the litho plate is artwork.Very inspirational.

Thank you for the support, reading these comments make the effort worthwhile. I should have made a plug then a female mould from that. Then poured a rigid resin plug. Always makes sense after the event. I will make it work somehow. The shape of the plug makes me think a plunge mould may actually work fine. I am a cheap skate and with PETG at £10 a sheet I can't afford to get it wrong too many times. I have a plan B, there is a company I trust that are happy to vac form from this...... Once again thanks for your and in fact everyone's support.

Always worth brushing a layer of pre gel onto the foam to help with the first ply it just prevents air entrapment and holds the glass just where you want it.

Thanks, have you a link to one that you can recommend?

@cammnut You don’t really need to purchase anything. If you mix a small quantity of silica into a separate mix of resin to a consistency of toothpaste then brush and screed it into the surface of the foam you’ll find it a great help. It’ll prevent air entrapment behind the first ply and greatly improves the bond as well as keeping the glass or carbon tight to the foam core.

I had no trouble with air behind the cloth, the problem was on the overhangs and caused by the stiffness of this specific cloth. I think it was caused by not enough resin. I was scraping the bottom of the barrel. I normally lay a lightweight cloth first and that would have served the same purpose I reckon. But thanks for your suggestion.@@dodge2047

Great work...Now I know where all the blue foam went 🙂 Can't seem to get that or lithoplate these days.

Owen corning does an XPS extruded polystyrene that should be similar to the good old blue foam. Litho can be difficult to find..

Hi Danny, are you familiar with easy composites? They have some excellent mold and pattern making products, in particular, I think you'd find pattern coat primer and pattern coat gloss really helpful, brushes on easily, quick drying, easy to sand and will polish to a high gloss. The downside is it's Polyester based, so a bit smelly while it dries.

Hi yes i know of them. Wasnt aware of that product though, i will bear it in mind

A bread knife or better still, an electric carving knife are great for cutting foam insulation.
@cammnut

I have tried a bread knife and it didnt work very well as it traps the blade. A hack saw blade would also work. The padsaw has a 10tpi blade it was definitely quickest.

Did you lay up the twill cloth on a 45 degree bias to the center. That will allow it to drape much better.
@cammnut
@cammnut 5 месяцев назад
I laid it perpendicular to the part so the material weave was at 45 degrees, is that what you mean. The carbon was fine used the same way. I probably asked too much of the cloth.
@sifrance-jw7od
@sifrance-jw7od 5 месяцев назад
The warp and weft of the cloth need to be at 45 deg to the center line.
@cammnut

In an ideal world perhaps, and if you can afford to cut your cloth diagonal. But I take on what you say. The carbon cloth of the same weight conformed perfectly, and the glass cloth did drape eventually. I was running short of resin so it wasn't perhaps as wetted out as I would normally do. The reason I mentioned it in the video is I have never had an issue with the cloth from ECF, I have from other suppliers.
