Breaking the existing record, pushing the envelope even further in this no-compromise, lightweight 556-grammed Ultra Steep Slope Dominator. To my mind, this is the first Lego Vehicle to climb up these savage degrees. Its climbing capabilities and versatility blew my mind.

tbh a 60° slope is what all military tracked vehicles of NATO have to overcome, so not really special
@denisa10
@denisa10 4 года назад
@@osmacar5331 you know that this thing is made out of plastic and a bit of rubber and not (at least I guess so) designed by multiple people who are getting paid pretty well for designing it. Be a bit nicer to the builder, a 60° slope is phenomenal for a toy.

Incredible work, really well done! maybe take off the cabin and lower the center gravity a bit more, might give you a degree or 2 extra? maybe you can try to beat my recent speed record? i need competition!
@896gerard

No, taking the cabin off didn't deliver any advantage in degrees, because the cabin was very light. I tested for this, I would have shown it in the video if it really could do more...

896gerard Adding as much weight as possible to increase traction (as opposed to grip) may allow you to increase the angle as your limiting factor appears to be slipping as opposed to the entire vehicle flipping. There is a Lego part which is compact and contains lead as a weight for the earlier Lego technic kits, this would make it easy to keep the C.O.G. really low.

@heksatek3407
@heksatek3407 5 лет назад
Reason this worked: 1 Yes, the 4 tracks DOES give more traction ( aka friction) 2 the tank is quite flat, which means itsvcenter of gravity is low making it less likely to topple over it self. U can also make it front heavy to further improve this feature
@896gerard
@896gerard 5 лет назад
Have tried to make the front heavier. Does not work, the current setup proved to be the ideal design. With the cabin on front, there is already more weigth on the front. The reason that making the front any more heavier does not work is that the added weight fights against the friction of the tracks (when the angle is so steep, the weight of the vehicle is almost fully pushing in the vertical down direction). So yes you're right that weight balancing is the key here, but I've optimized the design already for that.

@basberend

the reason this works in my opinion is because the rubber track pulls itself up on the horizontal tracks. without them you will never get up this steep. (are these rubber mindstorm tracks ??) i like the moc.
@896gerard
@896gerard 5 лет назад
@@basberend Disagree. It would climb even steeper surfaces when the surface is real rocky and / or soft. The horizontal 'racks' are an unideal Lego version of a rocky surface.

That's cool and all, but a towel yields to the treads of the tracks... It's like having grooves for the treads to fit into so it doesn't fall. I think a more accurate test would be a solid material. And with the simulated rocks... You might as well just put it on tracks if you're going to help it that much.
@896gerard
@896gerard 5 лет назад
Not true. When climbing a muddy hill, the tracks dig deep into the soil. That's what the towel simulates. Regarding the rocks: an actual rocky environment would be easier. Just build it and try it out. Then you'll know.

This is very impressive, but I’m afraid that the “rocky terrain” may have offset the results by acting as a ladder. In other words: I think that once the treads found a pattern, it could climb up with ease. I will not deny how impressive it is though.

My children had a toy octotrak that was only good to about 45°. Sort of similar to your design, but with 3 joints, 8 treads and no steering. How many degrees can you hit with another unit? The second and later joints won't need active steering, but will need the rubber band suspension to maintain surface contact.
