It seems that “Bijou” was an idea Freddie Mercury and Brian May had of making a song “inside-out”, (having guitar doing the verses and the vocal doing the break). Mercury put the chords, title and lyrics, and the two of them worked on the guitar parts. Mercury sang the first line and then May transferred the melody to his Red Special. The song was finished without any input from Taylor or Deacon, the drummer and bassist respectively. ❤️Freddie❤️

Proving that the guitar is probably THE most expressive instrument EVER, especially in the hands of someone like Brian May. Gary Moore's 'Still Got The Blues' is beautiful too

Brian and Freddie wanted to flip a song inside out with the guitar doing to vocals and Freddie singing the normal guitar solo. The two of them worked on this together in late 1990 for the Innuendo album (knowing Freddie didn't have much longer) and completed it in an hour. This was Brian using the Red Special to say all the things to Freddie that Brian couldn't bring himself to say verbally. If you listen closely in the first half you will hear it speak about their long years of friendship, love, and laughter (and disagreements). In the last half, you hear the sorrow, future loneliness, despair, and then the ending final farewell and release of the dear friend and soul brother (as Freddie called Brian once). It's the Red Special's goodbye song to Freddie. Regarding the lyrics, Bijou means jewel or treasure. Freddie, as usual never explained the lyrics. It is NOT the name of either one of Freddie's cats nor one of the birds belonging to Brian's mother (both of which stories you will hear ad nauseam). IMO is it not about a person (could possibly be about Queen but not about Jim Hutton) but again is, I believe, about Freddie and his love for music and those who have and will listen to his music after he is gone. That's my take on it after a lot of study of Freddie the man and Freddie the entertainer. Another excellent reaction. This is one of my favorite songs. You've now reacted to all three of my favorites "White Queen", "You Take My Breath Away", and now "Bijou". Thanks so much.

One of my favourites. Brian plays so beautifully. You think it's an instrumental then Freddie comes out with this lovely verse for his "Bijou". Another hidden Queen gem. It reminds me of the guitar solo Brian does now in concert. Dvorak New World Symphony. Exquisite.

I had to watch this again today. Such a beautiful song. Guitar was amazing and Freddie’s voice was angelic. Bijou is a French word (Bee-shu). Best I could come up with for the pronunciation-lol. The word means “Jewel” in French. That’s a perfect definition for Queen and specifically for this song. Just beautiful. I think the lyrics are referring to Freddie and Mary. They loved each other since 1970 until the day he died. Freddie had told her he left her the mansion and the bulk of his wealth because if things were different they would have been married and everything would have been hers anyway. There is a documentary where it was said she spent about 6 hrs a day sitting at his bedside. They were inseparable. He created an administrative job for her and she went on the tours with him etc. he bought her a house down the street so she would be close. They really had an amazing bond.

The Red Special was “singing” in this one!!!!! Yes, I agree the album Innuendo does have a special feeding. They all knew it would be the last one they would get to do together while Freddie was still with them. Freddie’s vocals were amazing on all the tracks. Don’t Try So Hard is a beautiful song on that album. A fun song is Headlong on that album also.

Bijou was the penultimate song on Innuendo, The Show must go on was the final song.....for obvious reasons. Bijou is made as a back to front song....with guitar taking the lead and vocals doing the solo 😊. I suggest you check out “last horizon” live at Sheffield during Queen & Paul Rodgers tour. Great guitar based track from Brian’s solo album.

I had the album "Innuendo". ALL the songs on that album were wonderful. My FAVORITES, though, were "My Bijou" and "Don't Try So Hard". Those songs STILL give me chills when I listen to them. I had both of those played at my oldest boy's funeral (as well as "Who Wants To Live Forever"). He grew up listening the the music I played as I was cleaning house every Saturday. So he was a big Queen fan too. Beautiful music never gets old.

Was just about to go to bed but practically jumped up and down when I saw that you had done this one. Wish I could like this 100 times. To me it seems to musically express Brian’s sadness at the situation. Heard that it is called “inside out” because the usually the singer starts and then the guitar comes in. Thank you so much for the Brian May Day. ❤️❤️❤️

The "Old lady", "The Red Special" is the 5th member of Queen, Brians accolade of the best gutarist is well deserved, not just because of his masterly playing but because he writes jems like this, there are not many guitarists whom have as many instantly recognisable guitar solos as Brian.

Bijou (bee.zhoo - ornamental piece of delicate workmanship) is an incredibly apt title for this piece. I understand that this was a Brian and Freddie only creation. Enjoy watching you dig on Queen as you delve deeper into their catalog! I especially like to hear a new person's perspective on songs I've heard hundreds of times over the years. Like this one. I bought Innuendo when I was home on leave in November 1991. Freddie died a few days later. So my perspective was colored by that sad event. To me, listening to the album broke my heart because I was listening to a man who not only knew he was dying, but knew he was approaching the end. Brian's guitar in Bijou sounded sad to me. Like his heart was breaking watching Freddie go through it. So hearing you say it brought you calm, intrigues me. Gonna try and listen to it a few times with your ears; see if my perception changes any.

Hi, yes were talking different time periods. Your purchase was during the time of his unfortunate passing. An emotional deep connection must have transpired. Freddie`s voice sounded tranquil to me thus my feeling of calm and sense of peace I got from it was toward the end. I think the synthesizers helped the overall dynamics of the song. "you and me, we are destined to be together" - is how he/ they felt toward music and its process in the sands of time. Music can be subjective, and I am very happy that you shared your thoughts on what it meant to you. (Copyrighted HAP3SPEAKZ) ©️

Never fails that I get a chill up my spine with this song...and since my mom's passing, a tear in my eye (this was one of her favourite Queen songs). Brian can bring so much emotion into his playing. Indeed, that Red Special was singing the verses. Freddie just provided the 'middle 8' bridge. He is our Bijou (literally French for Jewel). If you haven't looked it up yet, this song leads right into the last song, which is The Show Must Go On - which could not have been a more appropriate album closer (considering Freddie's condition - he just destroys the vocals on that one!!) Just came across your channel, and it looks like you have a fervent love of Queen - consider me subscribed! Cheers!

Interesting ... as I said before I am total Queen fan but here’s one I haven’t stopped to listen to (I know, I know .. how could that be!!) wow..... I was also a fan of Rainbow and Ritchie Blackmore (guitarist) wrote a song on the Difficult to Cure album 1981 called Vielleicht Das Nachster Zeit (trans.. “maybe next time”). I am NOT saying they are so close as to be same but I immediately went to listen and compare.. of course I prefer Queen .. something about the Red Special that outclasses a Stratocaster any day and for me Brian conveys more nuances of emotion than RB but had to mention. As for the cat/no cat argument ... I listened multiple times to this and just feel it was about the song itself .. it will last forever ... different to other songs ... a way of recalling those last times together with a little jewel of a song where Brian gets to say goodbye. By the way this is entirely in my head and no facts back this up at all... just how it made me feel and sent me on a journey of my own. Thanks for doing this :)

I've listened to this song many times. It's one of my favorites. I think his "bijou," or jewel, is the HIV disease that he knows he's dying from. It's turned his life inside out. Freddie is singing about coming to terms with his sickness and realizing it will be with him for the rest of his life, like it or not. He accepts his fate and makes it become a part of him as if the HIV was on the same level as a true lover or a jewel that one treasures.. Therein lies the innuendo.
