Roger Taylor is one of the most underrated singers in the world. Singing while drumming is a rare enough feat, but he does it incredibly well. I've heard a live concert recording where Freddy was struggling to reach his highest notes, and every time he missed one, you heard Roger doubling his vocals. He is a phenomenal singer.

Well you have to remember, Queen had THREE scientists!! Brian May has a PhD is Astrophysics, Roger Taylor had a BA in Biology, and was in studying to be a dentist when Queen took off. Bassist John Deacon has his degree in Electrical Engineering. Freddie, being the artists, has his degree in Graphic Arts. Not many rock bands where all members are college/university graduates.

This may have been my favorite reaction of yours so far! I couldn't stop smiling😊 When I was about 21 I owned a bright yellow Datsun 280ZX, I lived in an area where I was able to drive my car instead of it driving me. I would play I'm In Love With My Car over and over and over as I'd drive way over the speed limit, slipping that stick shift into where I wanted it to be and forgetting everything but my car, the drive, the exhilaration and freedom! My husband taught me how to drive stick, he told me he'd teach me if I got a stick so I got a cheap little Toyota but he mainly taught me on one of his many Datsuns (thru the years). Didn't take me long to find my yellow and black Datsun 280ZX and driving became a pleasure. Thank you for doing this Amy, your reaction is perfection ❤

There were many things which made Queen such a great band. There is one that is often missed, and it's how Roger supported Freddie's vocals during their concerts. Freddie was not always able to sing everything every night, and whenever there was an issue, Roger was able to pick it up immediately, and sing the high notes while Freddie could "rest" at the lower range. One great example of those two guys blending together is the live version of Somebody To Love from Montreal 1981, and I really hope you will react to that along the studio version, somewhere in the near future :)

I love how you describe the sensory experience. The oily rags, the smell of exhaust. It is all there if you let your imagination go. Queen are masters of mood and manipulation. Nice to see lots of tunes coming from A Night at the Opera and hope more are coming. Although I have my suspicions that The Prophet's Song, sadly, will not be among them. Just to let you know. If you do Radio Ga Ga before doing March of the Black Queen I will cry. Officially. Big weepy tears. It will be messy. Please save me from my tears.

Yeah good comments Amy. This is my favourite Roger Taylor Queen song. It is also a perfect "road" song. I played this, at high volume, while driving off in my new Ford Ranger a few years ago, the first new car I'd ever bought. Roger, in any ordinary band would have likely been the star of the band, but in Queen, he had to play third fiddle to the genius of May and Mercury. He is a very good drummer, and indeed, a very accomplished musician, playing all instruments on his solo albums. He also hits all the incredibly high notes in several Queen songs. Personally, I think he's the weakest of the songwriters in Queen (they all wrote huge hits, including Roger - his was Radio Ga Ga) but this song is just fabulous, despite its basic lyrics. I think you hit the nail on the head in that everything in the music is just perfect for this idea.

That choir REALLY conveyed the absolute devotion this guy has for his car. But that was my particular take. I love your breakdown of this brilliant song. Thank you!

I've always heard "I'm In Love With My Car" as an update on the song "Daisy Bell (aka Bicycle Built For Two)." Both songs are in 3/4 - 6/8 time, and both songs deal with the men's relationships with their respective vehicles and girls. Albeit coming from two different centuries.... Roger Taylor - alongside Phil Collins, Karen Carpenter, and Levon Helm - has to be one of the best (and sadly underrated) live singing drummers in popular music in general.

What a fun reaction! I love this song. I love driving and listen to this all the time. I love how the guitar makes car sounds like squealing tires. Roger's voice is highly underrated. He has a great raspy voice and an incredible falsetto. Freddie once said he had a dog whistle voice. The car sounds at the end of the song were from Roger's own Alfa Romeo. I don't know if Roger insisting his song be on the B side was so much that he thought his song was so great but that he had so much faith in the success of Bohemian Rhapsody. The royalties were split 50/50 between the A and B side and Roger thought Bohemian Rhapsody would be a big hit. He was right! I hope you do the next 2 songs which are the next single and it's B side. Fun fact: Freddie bought several cars (a silver Rolls Royce was the first one) but he was the only one in the band who never got a driving licence. He was more stylish, he had drivers. I've got my licence, it's "sleeping" somewhere in a chest of drawers 🤣.

I was very surprised to see you covering this song, and I wasn't sure what you'd make of it - it's a song I've heard a lot of people make fun of. In fact, when Roger first presented the song to the band, Brian May said, 'You're joking, right?' He thought it was a joke! But for me your analysis absolutely nails what this song is trying to achieve - it's not necessarily about the harmonic content, or the melody, it's about evoking the feeling of a particular experience - and it does it really well. It's a different sort of 'flavour' for Queen that they'd do something like this, but it's what makes them so interesting as a band in my opinion. I absolutely loved your reaction & analysis and you've absolutely given me a new appreciation of what the band achieved with this song.

I always loved Roger voice too, so much character and passion in it. Give a try to "Tenement Funster" in the Sheer Heart Attack album. Since the early eighties, Roger has his proper band called The Cross, where he sings and plays guitar along to the drums thing. Brian also has a solo project under his name, just like Freddie. Three very nice singers, four talented composers and musicians for the price of one in a same band, is quite rare (Supertramp, Fleetwood Mac or Eagles had two or three great singers, more others combined great composers...) The Beatles apart (Ringo was a very limited drummer but at least he could sung). Some collective or family bands like The Commodores, The Jacksons, The Temptations... Probably some others I forget or just ignore.

I wonder why, growing up, I always seemed to be going about 10MPH faster when this song ended. I probably even got a ticket or two.

Now I would love similar analysis of all the Night at the Opera tracks. They are fantastic! Ok, we can omit You Are My Best Friend. It’s a lovely pop song, yeah, but compared to the others rather straightforward. But Prophets Song, Seasid Rendezvous, Good Company? They sure do show the versatility of the band. They are fantastic. 50 songs is rather too few for Queen.

"It's a clean machine" could even be in awareness of the same line in The Beatles' Penny Lane. Such a generous, empathic reaction Amy. When my son passed his driving test I compiled a CD for him with every track motoring-related.

This song is sweet, reeks of Deep Purple fast car songs. But Dragon Attack lives in my heart and soul. I play that fill all the time and if I ever meet Roger I will play it on my belly if i have to. I started writing songs after playing drums for a frw years, then shifting to guitar so my buddy would have someone to practice the drums with. He'd bring his guitar over and play my drums. Id bash oit Ramones like power chord riffs, that id written to be simple for him to practice along with. This is how I learned to write songs with feature drums. When I went on to record alone, I'd usually record everything elese to a click track and write and record the drum parts around everything else. One of my favorite instrumental pieces that ive recorded this way, is called Allegro Bowel Movement. 🤘🧙‍♂️🤘 Rich the Ancient Metal Beast

I love the way, on the album, Sunday afternoon cutely ends and then the opening chord of this blasts in.

There's not many bands who had more than one singer, never mind 3! Queen, were a group of talented musicians, all of which contributed equally across the board, to the point where they eventually decided that all their songs would be credited to Queen, rather than the individual artists. Of course, those who were familiar with the slight differences and nuances of each member, can soon work out who wrote which songs. This particular song has Roger Taylor written all over it. The boy racer, cool shades of a drummer!

Roger Taylor kind of sounds like Rod Stewart any kind of looks like Rutger Hauer. That was why he was my favorite.

Brava! Wonderful analysis. I have so much to say here! 1) Thank you for taking it seriously. I never understood the way this song is brushed aside because of it’s subject matter. Do you have any idea how many songs in the 50s and 60s were about cars? 2) Doesn’t surprise you that the drummer wrote a song that spotlights the drums. What WILL surprise you if you do another Roger song is that that is atypical for him. I noticed myself, and have heard many other Queen podcasters and analyzers note the oddity in the fact that most of the songs that Roger writes have the least interesting drum parts. In my mind that is partly because of how he writes. He writes by making a demo where he is singing and playing every part on all the instruments. Then brings it to the rest of the band. He is very competent with lead, rhythm, and bass guitar, but not really much more than competent. He can play well enough to play the parts he writes. But if Brian May is in your band, you’re not going to get much opportunity to jump in with guitar! 😂 So, I feel like Roger works hard on all the parts that aren’t drum, knowing he can add in a perfect drum part at any point, without even thinking about it really. (Also, if he isn’t writing the song, he can put all his focus into something amazing on the kit, like Brighton Rock). 3) I agree Freddie‘s voice works on almost every song, but not on Roger’s rockers. Roger has an unmatched cool factor. John is sweet. Brian is so lovely and kind. Freddie was absolutely magnetic. Roger? The definition of rock star cool. I’ve heard stories of people who have met or worked with the band and they will say how they have good conversations with the others without being embarrassingly starstruck. But something about Roger makes them feel too uncool to even approach him! 🤣🤣🤣 (A thought not coming from Roger himself. I’ve heard he is very kind and gracious to everyone as well!)

Freddie is always praised for making any song sound like its his I dont think he could have pulled that off with this song! He liked been driven around in comfort though! Roger has a very different tone to his voice which suits this song Like you said Freddies wouldn't really fit this song! Would have been fun to have seen him sing it though! I think he would have really played up the innuendis though!

It's funny that Roger's singing voice sounds like that. He was such a pretty boy back in the 70s. The high falsetto voice goes with that, but the raspy bad boy sound is funny coming out of that face. It works fine now that he looks like a sea captain or something.

I wonder if you are aware (I would assume so, but well, just in case) that that these last Queen songs are the first three on A Night at The Opera and that they segue one into the other without silences, forming kind of a mini suite (in the case of this song the car sounds at the beginning are only featured in the single version).

Taylor often took lead vocals on his own songs. Particularly in the early days. You're right about real car enthusiasts listening to their car, rather than to music. I know a few.
