The dove at the end gets me every time. So elusive. A symbol pf peace, love...and life. His life slipped away like the dove. I was a nurse who cared for AIDS patients. If he became sick even 5 years later, he would probably be with us today. There were only hit and miss treatments available then. It was a terrible way for such a vibrant soul to die.

Brian May, the lead guitarist, actually stated in an interview not long after Freddie's death (maybe like a year and half after) that he contemplated suicide after he died because he lost the only person he loved other than his family members. That truly made my heart break 😭

That's true. Brian said what made him change his mind was the thought of his children and his wife. As far as John Deacon is concerned though, a friend of his once said he too suffered from depression after Freddie passed away and probably he hasn't fully recovered yet.
@susieq9801

@@manuelamarconi5599 - John was only 11 when his own father died (maybe part of the reason he was so introverted) and Freddie, who became his "big brother", died at about the same age so it likely brought back awful memories for him and hit him hard. I suppose he decided family was more important and Queen was dead. Maybe he wanted to be the father his own never could be.

It's sad to ponder the "what ifs" with Freddie. He was truly a once-in-a-lifetime talent, a platinum needle in a haystack. Would there have been another Bohemian Rhapsody? Still performing? Still that flamboyant Freddie we all loved? (Ok, yes he would be!! ). Queen in their late 60s and early 70s would be running circles around everyone if he were alive.

After Freddie died Brian May is quoted as saying “You can’t do ‘what if’ can you? You can’t go there because therein lies madness.” I think he really got it right and if anyone might feel that way it would be one of Freddie’s band mates. RIP Freddie...we miss you!

You: "I'm prepared for this" Me: "No, he's not ready." No-one ever is for this heartbreak of a video. Just to make it worse, it didn't need to be twenty years later. Just two. The triple cocktail, the first effective treatment for AIDS, was put in widespread use in 1992. Had Freddie been two years later, it would have saved his life.
@DominikaCharvatova
@DominikaCharvatova 5 лет назад
People are keep saying that. But what must not be forgotten is that it was hugely thanks to Freddies and other celebrities deaths that so much money went into the AIDS research. Without that it would take much much longer. This is just another huge thing that Freddie helped to change with his life/ death. Let it not be forgotten!

I hear & saw this when it was first released in the 90's, as I was only really young when Freddie died, I didn't truly understand why my parents were crying that day in 91, and even though I was raised on Queen, it was only when I heard this song that I cried and understood the heartache of the world from that day, and still to this day, it brings me to full on tears this song, and since my fathers passing, it also makes me think of him as well as Freddie, but I know my dads up there listening to that god sing is heart out to the heavens :) What hurts also, it was only a matter of months to within a year apparently, that medication became available to stop hiv in its tracks so it didn't cause aids :( and obviously medications to reduce the effect of aids, Brian once mentioned about that, that if Fred had gotten ill just a little bit later he might still be with us... those what ifs really do suck.

John Deacon actually retired from music at the beginning of 1997 but then joined his former band mates for this song later in 1997 and then completely retired from music and social contact. Brian and Roger say they have no social contact with him anymore but they never do anything financially with Queen without letting him know. He let them know that he approves of what they want to do with Queen an he gave his blessing for the Queen movie Bohemian Rhapsody. He lives a very private life with the same woman he married in 1975 and they had 6 children so he's not alone. Just VERY private. Even his neighbors try to protect him from Queen fans and autograph seekers by telling them he doesn't live at his house anymore or that he's not at home. Roger said he heard John appears "a little fragile" these days. Brian says that John lives in his own universe. Why? I guess only John really knows. Or maybe he doesn't.

Beautiful, intelligent reaction video, thanks. So much loving symbolism in this video. That second last shot, before the champagne glass, is the cover of Queen’s first album .... only without Freddie standing in the shaft of light. Definitely not crying. A Winter’s Tale, the last song Freddie wrote, a song of great beauty, courage, grace and love. To put a smile on your face, Queen’s RocknRoll medley Saturday night, Wembley 86.

Brian originally wrote this for a solo album but after realizing this was a tribute for Freddie he said “No, this has to be a Queen song.” So he got Roger and John to come back and record this song.

I like this song because it also allowed Brian to do the singing and show his other skills. John is so sad at the bass. Roger is the solid back vocal. A great way to say goodbye to your brother.

John Deacon was interviewed during the making of the Breakthrough video from The Miracle album in 1988? 89?, done on the train.You can find the documentary / interview easily on Utube. John says that, for him, what made that album work so well and made it feel so good, even after a 2 year break, following that very long, last "Magic Tour", was that it was STILL THE SAME FOUR ORIGINAL PEOPLE AFTER 18 YEARS. When he was asked, if one of the members left would he go on with a replacement or if the band split would he, perhaps, join another band??? He said "No." I'm a '59er and a huge Queen fan since my teens. I'm sure that the boys had already known for a good while, at this time, and were already helping Fred hide it, until he was ready. They were increadably protective of him and eventually were happy to blatantly lie for him. But, I digress...... John's answer to the earlier question is "No. Queen and my family have been my life for 18 years so far. For me, IT WOULDN'T BE QUEEN ANYMORE , IF ANY MEMBER OF THE BAND LEFT." So, after Freddie left us 😪 💕, John did a couple of tribute shows, worked on the Made in Heaven album and made this video with Roger and Brian, then he retired. Roger and Brian respect his wishes and privacy. Deaky respects their desire to continue and is still involved in the financial side and they okay any major projects with him. Hope this information is helpful.

I do think this is as much a happy song as is sad, it is perfect music and singing and celebrating Freddies life while mourning his loss, tears are for him but also for the band in happiness at them displaying their musical and singing talents individually in tribute to Freddy.

i remembered watching "too much love will kill you" by guitarist brian may at the tribute show in london in 1992. you could see in his face that he tried not to cry while singing to freddie ... but as a I am a man: i cried for him :-) you should take a look at the "freddie mercury tribute concert"! it's in the guiness book of records (guess 17 times). It was live-broadcasted to one billion (!) people in 76 countries! it was sold out in 3 hours, even though no performers were announced yet. It is till now "the biggest send off in history"...! First part was just a festival with some "unknown" bands like Metallica, Guns'n'Roses, U2, etc. - second part is Queen playing Queen-Songs feat. the singers of those bands and people like David Bowie, Roger Daltrey (The Who), Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), Elton John and so on :-)

I've made this long comment on the reactions of others & want to add it here also. The symbolism in the song runs deep… "A hand above the water, an angel reaching for the sky"… just look at an image of Freddie's statue at Montreux, Switzerland, overlooking Lake Geneva. You'll see it. "They're only flying too close to the sun"…in our solar system, the planet closest to the sun is Mercury.* Don't forget that Brian May has a PhD in astrophysics. He knows these things. Many of the lyrics are snippets from other Queen songs…"tricky situation," & "such an operation," for instance. I think you will find more as you listen to more of their songs. And the ending scene, the champagne glass on the piano, the single shaft of light, the sounds of footsteps & a door closing, these need no explanation. And "cut," that's the end. It is all so sad, & so beautiful. *The opening image of the flying man brings to mind the Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus, the father & son who made wings of feathers & wax in order to escape from the tower in which they were imprisoned by King Minos of Crete. Icarus, in his youthful exuberance & excitement about flying, failed to heed his father's warnings to not fly too close to the sea, lest he get his wings wet, or too close to the sun, lest the wax holding the feathers should melt. He flew too close to the sun, the wax melted, & he fell into the sea & drowned. So there's that, too.

I think the only song that makes me sadder than this one is Mother Love. Freddie had to leave halfway through recording as he felt so ill and said he would come back and record the rest when he felt better, but he never did and died a few months later. Brian finished the vocals for him and it's that part when it changes from Freddie to Brian that hits me every time. If you want something upbeat, why not try Good Old Fashioned Loverboy, or Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Better yet, how about their iconic Live Aid performance in 1985. It was voted the best live rock performance. This is the best version of it on YT IMO - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ktYlzVYQbwY.html

This song and video really tug at the old heartstrings. Brian, Roger and John did their old comrade proud. Now Rich, if you're looking for a change of mood, at the risk of repeating myself, you could go with Freddie's wrath and anger in "Death on Two Legs" , or a sense of cheesy fun with Roger's "I'm In Love With My Car". Hell, you could do both, usually the bookends on a live medley with their classic "Killer Queen". Although if you ever decide to check out "Death on Two Legs" as a stand alone reaction, I'd go with the official lyric video. It's the original "diss track"!

It didn’t fall apart, actually Brian and Roger are still touring, but Brian did go through a depressed and suicidal state and John thought that it wasn’t worth going in without Freddie around. John decided to retire in 1997. Queen and Adam Lambert are still going at it, strong as ever... I recommend ( if you would like to react to a less somber one) listening to Keep Your Self Alive or The March of the Black Queen.

Breakthrough in aids research happened just a few months after Freddie's death which makes if even sadder. Had he contracted the disease just a little later he may have been able to be treated. The doctors say the incubation time is about 10 years from the time your infected until the time the first symptoms appear so that means he would have contracted aids in the late 70's, before anyone really knew anything about it. That what if is just heartbreaking!

Perfectly beautiful tribute to the man who truly was like a brother to them! here is a documentary clip of the making of this. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YdKYpoLfCA8.html&frags=pl%2Cwn yeah, John Deacon took Freddie's death the hardest and understandably felt that NO ONE could ever fill his shoes. So after they wrote this song and made this video he retired music completely. however, he stays involved in the band's finances but stays out of the limelight. John gave his approval for the making of the band's biopic movie Bohemian Rhapsody. however, according to Brian May, basically John has more or less become a recluse.

There is a part of me that is glad Freddie has passed on, not out of hate, but love. If he was still around the internet and social media would have torn him to shreds. The press is just as bad. I am a firm believer that there were/are people in the world whose candle was a little too short, but in that brief moment of light they show us another way to think, to act... to live. To live by the example left by someone great is the greatest honor to give to their memory. His light may have been short, but it was bright. How is your light... dim or bright?

Brian wrote this song and yes this was the last time that John played with Queen. Al three of the surviving members of the band thought that it was over, they were a quartet and not a trio so they all went their separate ways for a lot of years. John retired from music all together and both Brian and Roger went on to have their solo projects. Of course, though both did well, they certainly didn't do "Queen" well and neither of them ever expected to. Later while just jamming with Paul Rogers (Bad Company and Free) they had a good time and decided just to do a little fun tour. People couldn't get enough so a second tour was booked. Queen + Paul Rogers were selling out stadiums around the world. Paul couldn't commit to being a touring musician because he had his solo stuff and his other businesses to deal with so again, Brian and Roger thought that was it. Then they were asked to appear on the American Idol finale and there they met Adam Lambert who had a great voice and a vocal range like Freddie if not a bit larger. Adam had been doing musical productions since he was a kid so he had great stage presence. Brian and Roger were itching to get back onto the road so they asked Adam if he would come and play with them and see if it would work. Well 11 years later, they are still touring as Queen +Adam Lambert and still selling out stadiums around the world. This October they are going out on a North America Tour and all the tickets for those shows sold out in one day. People love Queen music and though Adam doesn't try to be Freddie, he puts his own spin on the songs, he can sing all of them in the key they were written and he does an outstanding job. Nobody can replace Freddie and neither Brian or Roger would have ever put a Freddie impersonator out there to try to do so. Both thought that would be an insult to their friend/bandmate/brother. Brian is 76 and Roger 74 so this coming concert and one in the Spring of 2024 in Japan may be their final tours. I am sure they will still get together for special performances or a live performance that will also be broadcast online but touring takes a toll on the body and neither Rog or Bri are young and Brian had a heart attack a couple of years ago so it is probably time for them to hang up their guitar and drumsticks. There is no show like a live Queen show so for everyone who has a ticket to these next to tours, I am so happy for them that they got to experience the feast for the senses that is a Queen live show. I am so glad I have seen them live too. It was back in the old days with Freddie and I will never forget it. Thank you for your reaction. Maybe the "what if" is "what if Freddie gave us enough, What if Freddie gave us all he had, what if Freddie felt he was done? Maybe we want too much, perhaps we always want more of the deliciousness in life; but what if we are not ever supposed to know what it means to not long for more? What if it is longing for more that keeps us moving forward? I love cake, but there comes a point when I may want more, and I know that I could eat more, hell, there is not even anyone watching to know that I ate more, but I know I have had enough, but the longing remains. Maybe it is supposed to be like that in all things.

Queen isn’t Queen without Freddie or John. I couldn’t bring myself to going to a Queen Featuring Adam Lambert makes me feel like I was cheating.

the clips are so important, they show Freddie at his finest. Performing and laughing and isn't that what we want to remember.

It breaks my heart, I miss Freddie so much. To celebrate him, please watch the full 24 minute Live Aid set. It’s the most upbeat you can get 😉. Thanks!

You should react to Freddie doing Great Pretender. He said that song reflected how he was in life. Private behind the scenes, and pretending in the public eye.

You should react to Love Of My Life (Live at Wembley 1986) my absolute favorite! Or their entire Live Aid performance (Best Version) (HD) its a little over 20 minutes but it is amazing! One of the greatest if not the greatest performance ever!!!!

John Deacon officially retired though he gave his blessing for the group to continue without him. He still collects royalties so he never has to work again.

You should check out The Unknown song from Made in Heaven, it's only a piano piece, but I believe Jim, Freddie's partner recorded Freddie playing whilst at home, it's a truly beautiful piece of music

I was of the first person in Pittsburgh, PA USA diagnosed as having been infected with the new virus that destroyed immune systems. They told me they didn’t know much about it and that I should be dead within 6-12 months, to come back when I got sick and they would make me comfortable. Two years later and I’m still alive! By this time it’s 1985, and it was fourteen more years after Freddie died in 1991 that my doctor told me I now had full blown AIDS. Now it’s 2023, forty yeas since I was told I’d be dead within a year. Only the good die young, eh? I must be one bad MFer, then.

John decided after Freddie passed that there was no Queen without Freddie. And is now retired. He still gets royalties from the songs. But he has left the music business.
@Sarah-nn5ef

This really makes you realize you can't have what if's with Freddie or anyone who dies. "What if he was still alive" "What if he got the disease 2 years later." Because there is nothing you can do about it. You can't make them get it 2 years later, or bring them back to life. If you focus on the what if's you will be miserable and, be in a giant spiral.

This was 6 years after Freddie’s death; John Deacon retired after this. You can feel their pain. As for the other comments about Brian contemplating suicide, he lost his marriage and father around the same time as Freddie, so it was a lot all at once.
@darcisavelli546
@darcisavelli546 5 лет назад
It is sad for all of us. But there has always been one small part of me that feels Freddie didn’t want to get old. I don’t think suicide or any like that, I just feel like he wanted to be remembered like he was when he was doing his concert. If you had never seen this video or the days of our lives the fun and crazy Freddie is what you would think about. So get those two out of your mind and think of the fun Freddie.

Wow not only is the video really really sad but what you said made me emotional too haha. I'd loce if you reacted to I'm Going Slightly Mad. It's about his reaction to the medicine he took which gave him hallicunations and stuff. But it's a really fun video.

Plus, I'm Going Slightly Mad is absolutely perfect for those days when you're just feeling frustrated, exhausted, overworked, and just, like, totally at your breaking point. It will both reflect how you feel and cheer you up at the same time.

Literally months after he died they found new medications that controlled HIV a lot better and he most like would have lived a full life. Brian talked about it in an interview and that’s where his “you can’t do what if’s, therein lies madness” quote comes from
