Queen's Gambit
Alma Wheatley, the mother of Beth, is playing the Piano in the Episode 4 in MEXICO.
I think the song is a Piano Version of:
Mascagni - Son Pochi Fiori

I thought the mom was the best character and the show dropped off a little after her death. The relationship the two of them had was enjoyable to watch. You would have assumed her mom would be unsupportive and restrict her chess playing but she was just opposite.
@cerseilannister7382
@cerseilannister7382 3 года назад
I think exactly the same, in the whole series I was much more attached to the mother and i felt a lot more pain for her than for Beth. It's quite problematic because Beth is the main character but everything seemed so easy for her, I find that Anya taylor joy plays a robot, even when the mom dies I don't feel not enough emotion, while yet there is a strong relationship that it was to create between them, the mother deserved more recognition.
@randydandy8196

@@cerseilannister7382 I think her acting was good. Her being emotionless is a result of losing so many people in her life until she was numb to the feeling, or maybe expected it. U did see her spiralling and being sad. But I think she didn't break down to tears in the show becoz she kept reminding herself about what her mum told her, to look out for herself becoz everyone will leave her eventually

True af I accused her three times LMAO First I thought she'd make her a slave for doing chores but she even prepared a nice room for her (tho she kinda had this platonic and not-very-affectionate relationship with her because of her husband's lost presence) Second I thought she'd restrict Beth for pursuing her career in chess (no chess board and no money for turnament). But she kinda prevent Beth because she was broke and also because of gender + skin color streotype at that time Third I thought she's exploit Beth as a money maker in the house. It turned out although that she did ask for 10% commision (which is very little), she deeply cared about Beth, they even grew closer, talked more, told secrets, travel together, giving Beth enough space to enjoy life outside chess, and she also listen to every Beth move in chess game (eventhough she didnt really understand)

Notice how she introduces her daughter first rather than thanking the audience. Her change of character and relationship between Beth makes what happens next all the more tragic.

I cried my eyes out thinking of her finally overcoming her stage fright for the first time, and playing in such a relaxed way, showing the people the beauty within her, and then suddenly passing. I've played the piano for 12 years and I never could have shown my emotion fully when performing because of the stage fright, it has always stopped me from showing myself to the world when I wanted them to listen. I hope to one day overcome it and just live, like Alma did right here. So heartbreaking...

I'm a musician also and this scene crushes me knowing what's about to happen to Alma. Music has always been her escape and I can feel the emotion and pain when she plays because that's how I feel when I play music too. It's like she gets to express her emotions one last time except this time she gets to share it with an audience

I like how she said that her dream was to play piano with big audiences like in the theaters... and then she finally did and then she died after like she achieved all she could've have wanted in her life.

I felt so sorry for her. She was learning how to be a mother and I think she was such a nice companion, the only one who beth can talk to and gossip about other players without her skills being judged. Idk why some people on twitter blamed her for being over controlling or greedy. Just because she adopted does not mean that her already existing motherhood instincts suddenly will change to evilness. She was protecting Beth from being sabotaged and also encouraging for her path. She had flaws too but she still seemed really sweet to me.

I always thought that her death is quite sad, but now I think she died a fulfilled woman. Performing in public, seeing her daughter doing well, reliving old romances. It is tragic but beautiful for her in a way.

Marielle Heller is simply fantastic as Alma Wheatley, I love her work as a director, but seeing her on-screen like this, playing such an emotional role as the troubled housewife, manager to her daughter, and mother figure, it just made me wonder what else can she do

As great as Anya Taylor-Joy was, my favorite performance and character in this show was Marielle Heller as Alma. Such a layered, subtle performance. It’s crazy that she’s not only a talented actress but is also an accomplished director. I’m excited to see all the work she does after this!

Each time Alma plays the piano, the story is about loss. The first time, we lean about Alma's child. The second time, Alma's husband has abandoned her. This time, the music might be happy, but no, it is merely the prelude to Alma's own passing.

Just a few flowers, humble violets, they are the breath of April with their tender fragrence; And for you I have snatched them from the sunshine.... If they could speak You would hear them say: We are timid and shy daughters of spring We are your friends; We shall die this evening, but we are happy to wish you, who love the unfortunate: may heaven grant you all the good things that it is possible to hope for. and in my heart adds a modest but sincere word: May your life which brings comfort to others be eternal spring... Ah, desire to accept All that I can offer!
