John said when asked that he'd never do a solo because he couldn't sing. But he was their biz manager and built a lot of the electronics. John wrote the bass line, Freddie and David wrote the lyrics.

Freddie and John in truth were very close friends, and Freddie took him under his wing, so to speak. John was so devastated by Freddie's death, that he gave up music. He was quoted as saying that it is impossible to replace Freddie.

As others have shared, please don’t assume everything you saw in the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” is true. The movie is a biopic that had to be a box office success and that required telling the Queen story in a Hollywood way rather than being a true documentary. John Deacon studied electronics in University (College) and graduated with honors. He started working on his postgraduate degree but decided to quit when Queen started to become a success. He never thought he would be a rockstar but instead thought he would play in a band while working on his degree and then get a “real” job. John was several years younger than Freddie and Freddie took him under his wing and helped him along. John had lost his father when he a preteen so the relationship he had with Freddie was pretty special.

Fred never said that about John. John had a degree in Engineering and made his own speakers.

Thank you for recognizing both John & Roger. Both are grossly under rated. John played that riff for the band then forgot the riff when they broke for dinner. Roger remembered it and the rest is history.

John Deacon was an Electronics engineering. He Created the Deacy Amp. it took them 12 years to get close to the sound of the amp to make a replica copy.

Queen was my band man , i have every thing they have ever put out, i seen them live in Toronto doing the The Game tour. There first 4 or 5 albums were so incredible. Queens first album was really heavy rock . And then came there albums which were considered concept albums. Just an incredible band.

Don't take the movie to serious. Freddie was depicted as a really mean person, especially in the line you mentioned. In the reality, Freddie was the one who helped John deal with all the pressure of being a rockstar.

Live Aid was held on July 13, 1985. The Queen Wembley converts were held on July 11 and 12 of 1986, just shy of one year later. Originally they were to do one concert on the 11th but it sold out quickly so they added another for the next day resulting in Queen playing for 150,000 over the two days. This performance comes from the second date.

John wrote the baseline. That's how the song began to evolve. Under Pressure was a joint product with Queen and Bowie but John's baseline was the inspiration

Don’t take the movie too literally. Freddie was never the mean, diva that was depicted in the movie. Freddie always said he was not the leader of the group, he was the lead singer and they were equal partners. Both Brian and Roger admits that Freddie was the mediator whenever there was conflict in the group, getting everyone to come together and cooperate. As for John, he has an honors degree in electrical engineering and created the Deacy amp that Brian uses to create some of his unique sounds. Many engineers have tried to recreate the Deacy amp, but have yet to nail it, although they came close. Actually they all got along of course there were creative differences at times he loved them so much that he gifted them his part of the proceeds for the last four albums he did before he died he gifted them that out of love and to say thanks for their support of him when he was sick

Roger was singing David Bowies lines. That is why he is so prominent in this song. He was never lead vocals, though......that was Freddie. They all were good vocalists.

From 1982 to 1986, Queen hired a touring pianist, because they felt like Freddie needed to be closer to the crowd in some specific songs. In 1982 they had Morgan Fisher (Mott The Hoople's pianist (the band which Queen supported in their first concerts)). In the same year they had Fred Mandel (a guy who would work in one of Freddie's solo album and one of Brian's) And then they would have the guy from the video until 1986, Spike Edney. However he has the touring been the touring pianist since then. He worked in some Brian's and Roger's solo albums and even in one album of Queen.

Spike Edney has been with Queen for years and still is. He sometimes plays rhythm guitar and piano. Most of the time he is stage left, just out of the spotlight. Check out Dragon Attack to see John shine again. Love how you research things you want to know. Great reaction!

Queen were recording in Montreux, Switzerland and David heard they were recording and visited them. They jammed for awhile then decided to write a song. John came up with the bass riff, then they went to dinner and he forgot it but Roger remembered it! They finished the song in an all night session and Freddie and David finished mixing it in New York. Vanilla Ice put his song out and when Queen's manager called him on it Ice denied it was the same riff. Queen and David had to take him to court and he finally confessed he had stolen the riff. It was a hit by then so Queen and David just asked for songwriting credit. Everyone made a lot of money! Please don't think that the movie is reality. If you want a good documentary watch Days of Our Lives. John was 5 years younger than Freddie and joined the band when he was only 19. Freddie encouraged him to write music and John ended up writing some big hits, You're My Best Friend, Another One Bites The Dust and I Want To Break Free. At college he received a first class honours degree in electrical engineering. He could fix equipment when it failed and he made an amplifier called the Deacy Amp for Brian out of a transistor radio he found in a dumpster that has never been duplicated. Brian still uses it. Queen had 2 bass players before they hired John. John fit in and didn't try to overshadow Freddie and picked up the songs immediately. The band was very close and yes they fought a lot but Freddie was the one that kept everybody together according to Brian, he was the peacekeeper, yes the movie is good but they make him look mean and he was a very gentle shy person

I wish you could have seen them live too. I saw Queen in 1977 (last stop on their News of the World tour). . . in their true prime IMHO, and for me Freddie was the best I've ever seen. David Bowie and Annie Lennox sang Under pressure at Fredies Tribute concert in 1992. You should watch it, was wonderful who came to give Freddie a good send off. This is Johns song and it was no 1. Love Deakie, great musician and businessman. They are all world class musicians.

Each member of Queen has their own college degree. Brian May earned his PhD in astrophysics in 2007. Freddie Mercury had a degree in graphic art and design. John Deacon has a degree in Electronics, and Roger Taylor has a bachelor's degree in biology.

According to Freddie's personal assistant, Peter Freestone, Freddie was eating breakfast and heard Ice Ice Baby come on the radio. He stopped eating and had a weird look on his face. Peter thought there was something wrong with the eggs he had made him. Freddie told him no then got on the phone and called Jim Beach to tell him what he had just heard. Jim Beach, their lawyer/manager, was aware of the copyright infringement and was already on it. Peter said he hung up the phone, finished his breakfast and never spoke of it again. Some studio versions are really good, like "Who wants to live forever" ! And if you REALLY listen closely to music from the 1990's to today, there are a lot of sampled/stolen beats, riffs, lyrics and moves taken from way back in the 60's, 70's, and 80's ! Three of the BEST decades for music ever !

BTW, DON’T BELIEVE how the BoRhap film portrayed Freddie’s relationship w John (or Freddie’s personality as a whole, for that matter)… John was SO SHY, Freddie was quite protective of him; John actually referred to Fred as “his (John’s) voice”. And, John said it was Freddie who ENCOURAGED John in his song writing (John said that Brian & Roger didn’t discourage his writing, but didn’t seem to take notice, either.) …John has a degree in Engineering; he DESIGNED and BUILT Queen’s one-of-a-kind amp system (which I assume he must have a patent on… NO ONE else has ever figured out how to replicate it). And he still oversees Queen’s finances, even though he’s officially retired. Freddie would’ve never spoken to John in the tone/manner that the film suggests.

Don't be fooled by the video of this song with Freddie & David singing their parts...it's a fan compilation of Freddie live at Wembley (with the studio version) and the visual of David singing it w/Queen at the Benefit concert for Freddie. But it clearly remains a powerhouse of a song.

NOT "Live Aid" - This was Queen's 1986 "The Magic Tour" - named after their album, "A Kind Of Magic". This whole Wembley crowd was there to see Queen and only Queen! Gotta love Freddie's warm-up vocals & interaction with the audience. Let's get several thousand folks to sing along. No problem for Mr Mercury! (oh, your expression when John started playing his bassline riff). It might by fun for you to listen to Queen's studio version of "Under Pressure" because it's the only place you will hear David Bowie singing with Freddie! David sings all of the lower, deeper lyrics in the recorded version, while Freddie sings the higher, lighter notes. In concert, it's Freddie taking on those lower notes (and some awesome high ones too). And Roger is singing most of the higher ones. PS - Ignore the film as pertains to the friendship between Freddie & John. You'll be happy to know that Freddie watched out for John. Helping him develop his songwriting talents and making sure John's songs came out the way John wanted them to.

I love it when people give John his due. He's one of the most underrated musicians ever. If you want to see Deaky absolutely shine, watch Liar - Rainbow concert '74. It's early Queen and they hadn't recorded any of John's songs yet, but he's the backbone of it and many of their early tunes.

I saw them several times live. Always the best live band you could ever imagine.

Some people believe Freddie was 'showing off' before the song started but he was using his warming up routine and invited his adoring crowd of around 100,000 to join him, and of course they did, and absolutely loved him for it. This famous gig was from 1986, and Vanilla Ice got rightly sued for stealing the opening guitar riff (which was apparently written by John Deacon) for his hit 'Ice Ice Baby'.

Freddie looked after John, who was not too keen on the star side of Queen and Freddie helped John find his own voice in the band, which had strong personalities in it. The band had spats but really you could tell they genuinely loved each other, especially towards the end with Fred. John went out of the public limelight as he was so devastated by Freddie’s death, they all were, you have no idea the vitriol and nastiness of the British tabloids in the lead up and just after Freddie died and Roger and Brian went on shows to challenge all the bs.

Spike Edney was backup piano player for queen, but kept out of sight. He has since been on stage with Brian in solo concerts. ❤️

Queen were the best live band of all time, in fact they’re still amazing with Adam Lambert, I saw them last June and it was great. Are they better live than in the studio? I can’t answer that, I just know I have loved them since 1973

Little story: when they were in the studio and Deacky came up with the bassline, then they all went to dinner and when they came to the studio John could not remember it but Roger Did.

That movie was very factually incorrect in many ways. Freddie protected John, vouched for him to get him into the group, and helped him be able to be on stage and perform, John was so shy. But everyone knows John was great at electronics and helped the band so much in that way. He had a degree and built some sort of small amplifier that to this day no one can re-create that helped with Brian’s guitar sound. And helped with a lot of those special sounds they were able yo have. But John retired after Freddie passed, they were so close and Freddie was his driving force. (It’s both their songs, they performed it together and apart, and the both wrote it together).

He also collab with Michael Jackson, Montserrat Caballe ((Spanish Opera Singer) one of the greatest collaboration, that's how a collab work)

At the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert (at Wembley) David Bowie sings this with Annie Lennox (with Queen). She is a bit weird but it's still done well. A really great performance that night was George Michael, with Queen, singing "Somebody To Love".

I missed my chance to see Queen in 1982, and while I will never get that back of course, I went to London this past June to see Brian and Roger in concert and they were still ah-maze-ing. I missed Freddie and John, and while of course Adam Lambert is no Freddie (and he'll be the first to tell you that), they put on a spectacular show and it was worth the trip. If they tour next year, I will go see them again. I'm not sure there was a piano in this performance, but the guy who played with them back in the day, Spike Edney, is still playing with them now. He plays on "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" in the Live Aid concert, too.

Yes the baseline and song idea was from John Deacon while they were hanging with Bowie. Actually John had anxiety issues about the fame. He said Freddie helped him and took the attention away from John to help. John and Freddie were friends and so John retired when Freddie died. He didn’t feel Queen was Queen without Freddie.

If you get your videos from Queen Official, they usually will not be blocked. Sometimes someone else drops the video and you get tagged because they are the blockers. This was 1986 and one of Freddie's last live performances. John wrote the bassline, it was the inspiration for this song which was a collaboration by Queen and David Bowie. John had an advanced degree in electronics. He never intended to be in a famous band. When he joined Queen, he thought it was just going to be a weekend gig band. Piano is Spike Edney, often called the 5th member of Queen. He is a multi-instrumentalist and played piano when Freddie wanted to just stay in front and no longer play piano. Roger is listed as one of the top 10 singing drummers and is up there under rock drummers as well.

Story has it that David Bowie bought a pair of boots in the boutique Freddie was working at in London in the late 60's, and they became old friends... so, when David was at Montreaux recording, the guys decided to go to dinner, got a little drunk and almost forgot the rift John had been playing around with, Roger remembered it and the rest is history... they never actually performed the song together on stage, the video you see them together is clips from different concerts. Checking out Roger's solo work, listen to "Beautiful Dreams", "Small", "Tonight", "Sunny Day" and anything on his latest album OUTSIDER, all are gold... As far as Brian goes, check out "Another World", "Resurrection", "Last Horizon", "Holy Man" and a real gem just released from THE MIRACLE box set is Brian's "You Know You Belong To Me", a nice little ditty similar to "Love of My Life". still can't believe they didn't release it in '89... blessings.

So, there is a musical called we Will Rock You based on the music of Queen, and it's set in the future and it's a Sci-Fi musical about the future of music. The characters in the show are on a quest to find a specific thing associated with music, and the quest ends at Wembley. In the UK version of it anyway. I have no idea why, but the US version has decided that Graceland instead of, say, Las Vegas maybe, is the center of music in America the way that Wembley is the center of music in Britain. But in the British version, the final destination is Wembley.

Your reactions are great! I read somewhere that Queen won a multi-million dollar lawsuit against Vanilla Ice for stealing that baseline. Guess you don't want to mess with Queen unless you have deep pockets. LOL. And, as others have commented, don't believe everything in the movie. Actually, there was a very close relationship between Freddie and John mainly because John was only 19 years old when he joined the band and was unfamiliar with the rock scene. The other members were older and had been together for awhile. (Queen actually went through about three other bass players before John applied for the job. The band thought his playing was great and that he would be a good fit.) As soon as John joined the band, Freddie encouraged John to write songs. But, as John says in quite a few interviews I've seen, it took him a couple of years to become confidant enough to bring his material to the other band members. I'm so glad he finally felt secure enough to write a bunch of songs with those incredible bass lines. Many of them became huge hits for Queen.

There are some very strong rumors from Brian and Roger that they will be touring the US in 2023. Queen is still great live! Even with Brian turning 75 and Roger 73 they still are masters at their craft and their vocals are strong. There's actually one more musician/background vocalist than there was and he; Tyler Warren; plays percussion. Spike Edney was already playing with the band as a keyboard/background vocalist when Freddie was still alive. Neil Fairclough has been their bass player for over 10 years when they decided to play again and John had retired from the music business. Adam Lambert has been their front man for over 10 years as well. He never tries to fill Freddie's shoes but sings in tribute to him every night. Adam hits one heck of a note on this song when he sings it with Roger. Freddie is missed terribly but the band includes him in every show.

Hey MMB, according to Roger from the Days of Our Lives documentary, John came up with that baseline and then they went to get food and when they got back, John forgot it, but luckily Roger remembered it. Yes, 99% of the time, they’re songs are better live. Freddie felt that the audience could hear the album version anytime they wanted, so the band always wanted to make their shows an experience and the songs are never exactly the same from show to show. In the movie, this song is playing while Freddie is standing in the rain telling that guy Paul that he never wanted to see him again and then Paul went on TV and sold Freddie out. Don’t take what Freddie said in the movie too seriously. They made it seem like Freddie hadn’t spoken or played with Queen in years before Live Aid and that was not true, they did solo stuff around this time, but came back together to record as Queen. You should watch The Days of Our Lives documentary. If you react to it, you can do it in 15/20 minute parts. I love that 30 years after Freddie’s death, Brian and Roger have been able to sell out stadiums and are still killing it on stage in their 70’s and they have been having a blast. I saw another documentary “The Show Must Go On” on Netflix and RU-vid. You should react to that also, where Brian thanks Adam Lambert, because if it weren’t for him, they’d be home rather than touring for the past 10 years and sharing the classic Queen songs with people. Have you tried adding the fair use copyright disclaimer of 1976 at the beginning of your videos? I noticed some other Queen reactors doing that.

There are many, many short, medium and long videos of interviews and conversations where you’ll meet the shy, quiet Freddie that everyone is talking about here. Queen is that rare rock band that had only a smattering of personal drama either public or private. All but Freddie were in stable marriages and were family men. The controversy around Freddie stemmed from the outside in which stemmed from vile attitudes at the time around being gay and HIV/AIDs. Freddie also had stable relationships but it had to stay behind closed doors. I don’t know if the “fighting words” between them in the movie were exact but, as they also say in the movie, families fight. Brian, Roger and John were more than happy to have Freddie be “the famous one.”

Queen has been touring for the last 10 years. Adam Lambert is the front man. His voice is very suited to sing Queens songs. Roger and Brian have stated in interviews that Freddy would have loved Adam. There will never be another Freddy, but without Adam a whole generation would not get to see Roger and Brian live. They are still fantastic even in their 70s. I am sure Freddy is looking down from heaven with a smile on his face as he watches fans still enjoying the music. The production value is amazing. Rumor has it they might do a North American tour as part of their farewell tour. I have been a Queen fan since the day they released their first album. I am now an Adam Lambert fan. Check out a few of the videos on RU-vid. Don’t make a comparison of Freddy and Adams voice just ask yourself if Adam does justice to the songs. That is his only goal.

Fred and John were the best of friends. John took it very hard when Fred died. He said there was no Queen without Freddie. Roger had a very good voice. Sounded alot like Rod Stewart. Unfortunately there already was a Rod Stewart.

Sometimes it’s the channel, it’s an insta block, ie the live aid channel. Anything that is corporate. During this time the idea of residency wasn’t really a thing. There is no way Freddie said that to John.

I've seen Roger in top drummers. The rankings are dependent on who's doing the rankings. For example I've seen Brian ranked any where from 8 to 58. I'm going with the 8. Roger has been ranked in top 20, sometimes top 10. John is always in the top bass players. The rankings are all over the place. You just have to consider the source. There are videos of Roger in concert. Search Roger Taylor cam. The ones at Wembley doing Now I'm Here and One Vision the best. For some reason I can't find the link. Queen sued Vanilla Ice over that bass line. There was an out of court settlement, but we don't know what the settlement was.

This is the 1986 Queen concert at Wembley Stadium (one year after Live Aid). Queen and David Bowie created and recorded "Under Pressure" during a late-night jam session at Queen's Montreux, Switzerland studio (David was a friend and had a home in Montreux). They never were able to perform the song live together because of scheduling conflicts but there is a video where someone combined the video of this performance with the video of the live performance of David Bowie performing Under Pressure with the remaining members of Queen at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert after Freddie's passing. He had to pay a large undisclosed amount to Queen and David Bowie to get the rights to Ice, Ice Baby plus give them songwriting credit. The movie was not a truthful representation of what really happened to Queen. For example, Queen never broke up. Also, Freddie and John had a very close relationship. When John first joined Queen in 1971, he was only 19 whereas Freddie was 24. Freddie immediately took John under his wing and became his mentor. Freddie encourage John to write and supported his writing. They were like a big brother and little brother. Freddie is credited by the other band members for helping John cope with the effects of being a Rock Star ( John had a difficult time being a celebrity). John was so depressed by Freddie's death that he retired from performing shortly after. He couldn't see the point of trying to go on without Freddie. John had taken Queen's newly bought Wurlitzer electric piano home because Freddie refused to use it (he hated the sound of the electric piano and preferred his grand piano). John had brought it home so he could teach himself to play the piano. While learning to play he claimed the tune for "You're My Best Friend" just sprung out of the piano. John always felt the song sounded better with the Wurlitzer which was used on the studio recording but Freddie refused to play it and would always play his grand piano in performances. (John wrote the song about his new bride, Veronica. Yes, after 6 kids and over 45 years of marriage, they are still together.) In the later years, Freddie didn't want to be stuck at the piano so much. He preferred to perform on stage so Queen hired Philip "Spike" Edney to play the piano and tour with them. Spike would also sometimes play the rhythm guitar and sing backup. He never became an official member of Queen but still tours with Queen (Roger and Brian) and Adam Lambert. Speaking from experience. The best concert I ever attended was Queen on Nov 24, 1981, in Montreal. It's been over 50 years and it's still the best concert I ever went to! And no, it isn't Ice, Ice baby. Vanilla Ice copied it from Queen who got it from David Bowie.

I saw them live in 1978, at Madison Square garden, 18th row. (shown in the montage sequence in the movie) I still have the concert program from that nite. I seen a lot of concerts there, including having season tickets for the New York Rangers hockey team, it was the only time I ever was afraid the building would collapse from the audiences reactions!!!

I highly recommend you react to Led Zeppelin “Kashmir” live “Celebration” performance. They are not young but OMG they’ll blow your mind. EPIC performance. Don’t let the age thing fool you in this case!

Concert 1986, one year after Live Aid. Freddie Mercury and David Bowie wrote the song Under Pressure. Both did their own recording of the song.

(Maybe I’m crazy or maybe it’s cuz I’m half asleep in the middle of the night… but the song sounded a fraction “sped up”/Roger looked like he was drumming faster than normal… is that possible?) If you want to listen to the original duet w David Bowie & Freddie/Queen (which is FANTASTIC, you DEFINITELY should hear it!)… There’s a video labeled: “UNDER PRESSURE CLASSIC QUEEN MIX” …which is a really WELL DONE fanmade video compilation of Freddie’s performance here and David’s performance of the song at the 1992 Freddie Tribute concert… I REALLY looks like they’re performing together! When there’s a live version of a Queen song available, I always request it simply because a LOT of reactors are only willing to play ONE version of a song (“one and done”, I call it)… and YES, Freddie’s powerful live vocals are unmatched! BUT… Freddie sang HIGH NOTES in-studio (like in the “Under Pressure” duet) that he almost never replicated live to save his throat. There are some songs that are TOTALLY DIFFERENT between studio or live, like: “YOU TAKE MY BREATH AWAY” …We all always request the live performance at HYDE PARK in 1976 because it’s so emotional raw/stripped down, just Fred & his piano. HOWEVER, the studio version is GORGEOUS… The production w Fred’s intricate vocal over layering are SURREAL, it’s so beautiful. There are also a TON of FANTASTIC songs that Queen NEVER performed live for various reasons: the production was too complicated, or Fred’s vocals in-studio are too HIGH, like in: “COOL CAT” …which you MUST hear! (There’s a GREAT fanmade video by KacioRMX to accompany it.) And, after 1988… Freddie NEVER performed live again due to his health. …ALL of my FAV Queen songs are from these later years tho!
