It's amazing that so much film footage exists of Queen Victoria's funeral procession exists, given that this was way back in 1901, and motion picture technology was still in its infancy at this point. Having watched the funeral procession for Queen Elizabeth just a few days ago, it's really interesting to notice how little has actually changed in regards to the pageantry, military outfits and funeral processions for deceased royals. I bet that this film footage would look even more similar to the modern era if someone took the time to colorize it and slow it down to normal speed. Just like with Elizabeth's passing, Victoria's death truly signaled the end of an era in Britain, and I'm sure back then, people also keenly felt the loss of a beloved, long-reigning monarch. Two remarkable female rulers, two centuries apart, who had both definitely made their mark on the world scene. RIP to Victoria and her great-granddaughter, Elizabeth.

@jacintabyline
@jacintabyline 2 года назад
Also I believe Victoria's funeral was the first time the gun carriage and coffin were pulled by naval cadets. This was unplanned as apparently the horses bolted somewhere near Windsor and some naval cadets who were lining the parade route were called in to pull the gun carriage the rest of the way. Which is why they are rather haphazard and not as regimented as at Queen Elizabeth's funeral. After Victoria's funeral all monarchs coffins have been pulled by the naval cadets.

It's surprising how disorganized everything is, compared to the Funeral of Queen Elizabeth. The British royals realize that in the age of TV and internet, when billions of people are watching and the cameras capture everything, there should not be a single wrong move. The level of perfection they've achieved is astonishing. Elizabeth's funeral was the greatest show on earth.
@camillep9346
@camillep9346 2 года назад
I don’t think it was as disorganised as these close clips may ‘indicate’. In fact, I think of it as merely representing the way things ‘were’ then - not forgetting the scapes and lack of technology etc. etc. Wonderfully ‘authentic’ - also, that old film looks more static than real life ☺️
@JoMarieM
@JoMarieM 2 года назад
Keep in mind, too, that the old silent films tended to make footage jumpier and more distorted than today's modern films, and they also made everyone appear to be moving faster. The funeral procession of Queen Victoria's time was also probably very dignified and precise; it's just harder to tell with this old footage!

I was looking at the horsemen and those marching. It looked as if many of the men were heavier than those we saw in Queen Elizabeth's funeral. It was a bitterly cold day in 1901, reportedly, so perhaps everyone was wearing layers of clothing. I did notice one horse acting up. His rider was very portly! I wonder what music was playing. It must have been difficult back then for many people to have traveled from afar to pay respects. Amazing that in many aspects the funerals were similar except I felt that Queen Elizabeth's was a bit more precise. The men marched in sync. Perhaps these had practiced more. Communication today is so much better. It was a blend of the traditional with a bit more modern. Both visually stunning.

It was the Kaiser's aggressive foreign policy and his hostility towards Britain that was one of the factors that led to the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. That's what I noticed too. It is the same basic ceremony, but rather haphazard in it's execution. It just demonstrates how well trained modern soldiers are. Another thing to consider is that modern ceremonies are specially choreographed for television. So I imagine the soldiers today are well rehearsed in the ceremony ahead of time. It also helps that most of the royal family today have served in the military, so they all already know how to march correctly.

This was even before the radio electric lights, and people had to find ways to entertain themselves. However, it makes me sad that people today are not interested in learning about the past. This was in an era where people had to work hard for what they had unless they were born into privilege but even second and third sons of the rich had to make their own fortunes or marry a heiress. I’m more of a WW2 buff but I enjoy seeing how people lived over one hundred years ago. I wouldn’t want to wear a corset though.
