John Duval this is the first time I’ve heard this.! i highly doubt it was played much in the US due to it’s content. This was a time in the US when Native Americans were fighting back against oppression of the us government. Groups such as AIM were taking over places like wounded knee & Alcatraz island to reclaim their native lands. Certain artists (Buffy st. Marie) were trailed by FBI, CIA for their native activism. These types of songs, in my opinion, were banned from US radio play. I already love this song. And I love it’s message. Truth to those lyrics!!! I can relate!

It would have been impossible to reproduce “March Of The Black Queen” in full in a live gig, due to the multi-tracked, cascading vocals and instruments. These guys refused to fake it by using backing tracks or backup singers to fill it all out. Heck, for many years, they refused to use synthesizers!

Is it just me or was 70's Freddie hotter than bright blue blazes? Multitasking all over the stage, striking those poses, that incredible voice. And at the end of 7SOR, "Do you like my claws?". Yes, Freddie. Mee-owww. On a more serious note..the imagery in Black Queen has always reminded me of Alice in Wonderland..not much reality but a whole lotta sharp-edged fantasy right out of a fever dream. Liked what you said, L. Some large talented choral group should take it on. One more lascivious comment (don't know what's wrong with me today!), Freddie singing "I'll be a bad boy, I'll be your bad boy", that whole passage, made me wide-eyed as a teen and even now, still, makes me have to fan myself. Whew. I know I'm not the only one about that. I've seen & heard others talk about how much they love that part of the song (& for the same reasons). Really, the song is one of their grander, regal efforts but that sexiness just materializes out of nowhere when you least expect it. Whew again.

Black Queen was pre-BoRhap, where all the previous hard work and experimentations really paid off, and still they're all unique. As for Brian's White Man, he was a thinker ahead of his time. Even Fat Bottomed Girls. As much as I'm against the message, it could be considered outdated feminism. Two Brian songs I adore are "Son and Daughter" (I read the lyrics as a man fighting against the oppressive society expectations on males) and "Sweet Lady" (same rebellion against society oppression, but from a woman's point of view). They are simply magnificent! Thank you so much, L!!
@Fitzroyfallz
@Fitzroyfallz 5 лет назад
tsukigalleta Feminists love fat bottomed girls! It's a great body positivity song, especially for a time when women's beauty standards required you to be practically anorexic. It has lines like 'YOUR'E gonna take me home tonight' not 'I'M gonna take you home tonight', implying that women can be beautiful and powerful even if they're not skinny. As for Son and Daughter, I know it's become a trans anthem to a lot of people, so that's pretty cool too.

When this song first was released on the (Day at the races ) album it was eclipsed by the song Somebody to Love...it didn't really receive enough coverage to become controversial in the USA..and nobody in the UK or other parts of the world would be familiar enough with the subject matter to find it controversial
@Sneak65
@Sneak65 5 лет назад
White Man - No. It was not very controversial. For a couple reasons. First off it was never released as a single so the masses likely never heard it. Secondly the world had not turned into a bunch of snowflakes yet. We could listen to politically charged lyrics without feeling like we were being attacked. Times have changed a significant amount over the last 40 years. As for the song. I love it. Have been trying to get peeps to react to this song for ages. And you gone done it! Thank you!!!! White Man and Dead on Time are two of Queen's most criminally underrated songs.

In fact Queen's longest running song is the "untitled hidden track" at the end of Made In Heaven's CD/Digital release, with over half an hour of running time; while their shortest song is the one prior to this, called "Yeah", it is (depending on the edit/release), only 3 to 4 seconds long and it is basically the fade out of "It's a Beautiful Day... Reprise" plus sound effects and the background sound moddified through effects in order to transition to the untitled track's modulizer synthesizer loops, accompanied by Freddie singing/shouting: "Yeah!"...

About "White Man", would you believe some group somewhere recently criticized it as being racially insensitive to Native Americans because "Queen tried to make the music sound too 'Indian' like the stereotypical music used in old Westerns when native people appeared on the screen". Seems like that totally disregards the lyrics. Anyone remember "Cherokee People" by Paul Revere & the Raiders? I'm of English, Irish & Scandinavian descent. But there's some Cherokee in there too. Songs like that always stir my blood just like centuries-old English & Irish (& Viking!) folk songs do. An Englishman I spoke to recently called me an "Amerimutt". I guess that sums it up. Anyway, I like the song & love the way Freddie sings it.

My DNA shows only a trace of indigenous blood, but I've attended hundreds of Peace Pipe ceremonies and Pow Wows, and listened to NAC/Peyote songs wafting across my yard through many a night, and don't think that Queen was trying to imitate native music with their White Man song. The only thing I hear in it that might be so construed is Roger's steady drumbeat, but it's really not so different from his usual style. I'm pretty sensitive to such things, but hear nothing to complain about in that song. On the other hand, Cher's song was, and is, considered to be a classic example of cultural appropriation. It seems that she allowed the public to believe that she was Cherokee & perpetuated that notion, even though her true heritage was Armenian.

If I remember this correctly Freddie never wanted Queen to be a "political" band but they still pushed boundaries and came up with some socially engaged songs such as this one, Is This the World We Created or Put Out the Fire. Obviously recommended! Roger also has a vast selection of political songs both solo and with The Cross (incl. Nazis 1994 which got banned by radio stations for being too controversial. Because apparently denouncing holocaust denial is too much for an average listener). As for Black Queen in similar rollercoaster style you should definitely give Prophet's Song a go. It's sometimes called Brian's Bo Rhap. And ofc I'm still patiently waiting for '39 :)

@@hannyhawkins7804 I would have to google but it definitely boosted album sales. That video is so unsettling. He should re-release it under Nazis 2018 title or something. In the album "Queen II", "The march of the black queen" connects to "Funny how love is". You should listen to them "together". Same thing with "Father to son" and "White queen (as it began)".

I adore Seven Seas of Rhye, so this video made me super happy. I need to go back and listen to White Man again. I never paid attention to the lyrics.

when I first herd march of the black queen song from the rock group called Queen it make me feel like I was on a acid trip back from the 60's. but the more I listen to it more I kind of liking it so I watch you listening to the song march of the black queen and you look kind of funny the way you rock out to Queen's music. lol.

Oh yesss L is baack!!🙌🏻 Dope reaction as always man🔥👌🏻 White man was a song I’ve also never heard before☺️😱 I just read something about it on Brian May‘s Instagram a few days before. Pretty dope and so deep (but true) .. and I don’t know why but it also could be a song in Disney‘s Pocahontas lol I’m stupid but okay😂🙏🏻 and oh lord..😱 Seven Seas of Rhye live ?🥰 uhh Roger’s high notes were just ear candy 🍭🍬🤤 tho and March of the Black Queen👑 is also just a masterpiece. And I guess it was never performed live because first of all it is very very hard to perform live with all those harmonies and secondly because the choir effect you‘re talking about was created by layering their recording over and over again (I heard that the recording tape already went transparent😯) and that it makes it impossible to do it live. Brian would say that „It was not written for live performance“. He once said it in an interview in which the interviewer asked him why they never performed the opera section in Bohemian Rhapsody live. see ya next time!🔥 (hopefully very soon tho😭 I can’t survive school without ur Queen reactions to watch😂🙏🏻)

I love your work, my man! You're hilarious, scratching with withdrawal! Love it! White Man - that's right, no controversy at the time the album was released. Nobody really heard it except for serious Queen fans. Somebody to Love was the monster hit. And Tie Your Mother Down got a fair bit of airplay. Thanks so much for reviewing it. It's an amazing song. And pretty interesting when the band says they were never political!? The March of the Black Queen was played live in at least 74 and 75, but only an excerpt as far as I know: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6pzkElG84Zw.html But it is amazing. I just love how you never know where you are going with Queen. So unpredictable. I just fall in love with song after song. There's so much there way beyond the monster hits. Big love to you El!

Uh huh...we thought MAYbe you don't LOVE us anymore...but we STILL love you. Sorry, I don't usually speak so LOUDly. Actually I've been enjoying your other reactions but also suffering withdrawal symptoms. Of course you're gonna cheat on us I mean do other reactions. Just don't make us go a whole week (or 5 or 6 days) without watching you watch Queen. We NEED it. I'm okay now (she said, smoothing her wildly mussed hair with trembling hands). Will gather my thoughts & wits before saying anything else.

I still do the posters on the wall. Of course now my posters are framed, they're hard to come by, usually I've traveled and worked to get them signed. It's gotten beyond posters to where there are photographs I've taken at live shows, vinyl, beautiful colored vinyl records in silhouette boxes, tour posters, show announcements from before they were Superstars, even have a Subway poster from England and a very interesting plastic type, but not plastic, I don't know what it's made of, its heavy duty, in Spanish it hung from the outside of the Arena announcing that the show was there. The thing is like eight feet tall hanging from my wall, but when I come home, especially when I've had a bad day, I can look around and it takes me right out of that horrible day and puts me into a better time, better frame of mind. Different bands, different years, different times. I may need a bigger place soon, unless I stop finding stuff that talks to me.

The majority of people who are Queen fans have only heard the greatest hits album, and seen Live at Wembley. Songs like White Man, Faery Fellers Master Stroke, My Melancholy Blues, and Fun It, are the domain of us hopeless romantics, diving deep, barely coming up for air and going back in. Soooo many deep cuts that are much more satisfying than their radio friendly pop hits.

only a small bit of black queen was performed live, during the Sheer Heart Attack Tour, Night of the Opera tour and the 4 dates before A Day At The Races, only the bit from "I reigned with my left hand..." and the end of to the guitar solo. it was comprised in the medley which usually featured Killer Queen and Leroy Brown, and in the Opera tour, the ballad parts of Bohemian Rhapsody. it was dropped on the Races tour and was replaced with a longer medley that now included Lover Boy, Millionaire Waltz and Best Friend

The last two songs Seven Seas of Rhye and The March of the Black Queen have that medieval type music, which made it so interesting and enjoyable to me. For some reason I get that era that harpsichord type music, that time. In my head when I hear it I think of villages with people drinking ale and wenches, pirates, court jesters and the Knights fighting, jousting, so vivid to me. I do agree. I can absolutely see a choir behind Queen doing the backup vocals on this song, it would be absolutely Epic. If they have a video of them doing the song, though I've never been able to find it live like you just said, they could reinvent that. They could have the choir and do the performance in front of the choir, even if they wanted to perform with the choir, if they just had a video of Freddie singing it live, they could hologram him in or video him in, but I think it would probably look better with them being younger and just doing the video, adding the choir in the background. OH my God it would be so great if they could work on it and do something new with it without changing the song. it was also interesting to me that the vibing music changed in the march of the black queen from that medieval type music two more modern and almost futuristic type music like it evolve that it was going really freaking amazing. and then yet at the end it kind of a little bit goes back into that harpsichord or that so signature guitar sound from that medieval period, but it doesn't go fully back into it. He was just so amazing with the things that he wrote and sang Oh my God the vocals on this, so amazing

TMG is the PREMIER Queen Reaction Channel!!!!!! There is a tribute band (A Night of Queen) that does a wonderful job of replicating the Queen studio versions of songs. They have 14 people on stage to perform "Black Queen" what Queen did with 4 band members and over dubs.

The choir effect was overdubs of their voices--was supposed to sound like 180 voice choir. I saw a thing once where some composer was taking apart Bohemian Rhapsody and said you could tell Freddie had no musical training or he wouldn't have written it. Then said he was glad he didn't.

White Man is an Amazing Song. March of the Black Queen is my 2nd Favorite Queen song. Check out Bohemian Rhapsody ,Killer Queen, March of the Black Queen live at Hammersmith 1975. March of the Black Queen is only approx. 1 minute & 20 seconds but that as close has you're going to get to a live version of that amazing song

Interesting to see Freddie holding his mic while playing the piano. This was before “Ratty”, Peter Hince, got that job and handed the mic to Freddie >600 times! Roger said, “and he better get it right”, which he always did
