BR is the classic Queen song but for me Prophet's Song is their best - shame most of the public have never heard of it.

@Scottlp2 it's a deep rabbit hole to explore. Their earlier stuff is amazing. Their later stuff, not so much. Still worth exploring.

Probably one of the most original broadcasters ever. When EMI refused to release Bo-Rhap as a single, he "purloined" a reel-to reel copy and played it 14 times on his Capital Radio show that weekend - the rest is history!

A video that clears checks can be more risky than one that is flagged without deducing their unique permitted use cases.

Seeing this on Midnight Special is one of those seminal moments. That show was the best and so gave me many great musical memories, including watching Prince's first TV performance (I Wanna Be Your Lover).

I agree A Day At The Races is a better overall album it has no weak songs and sounds more like a whole, and more mature.And I grew to loathe Bohemian Rhapsody being around when it first was released it was played too much and after all airplay after Freddy's death it for me became overrated. I rather listen to Innuendo which is in the same vein and has that beautiful acoustic guitar segment by Steve Howe .

yeah, and some of the stereo tricks i've grown to love so much are also not present. the original mix of this album for me is THE Queen sound and it's a shame, that Doug had to experience it in such a weird form

For me, it's Freddies 'coming out' song. He was from a strict religious family and his mother did not approve of his lifestyle. The man Freddie shoots dead is his mother's notion of her straight son, he doesn't want to do it of course but can't help his sexuality so he feels guilt. The operatic section is heaven and hell fighting for his soul (it even mentions Besmilla , the devil)...let him go, we will not let him go....etc. By the end, theres nothing more can be said or done to change the situation, so nothing really matters any more.

@celt67 This sounds plausible. But as Freddie said himself. Half of the pleasure of a great song is the eternal pleasure of thinking about its meaning in your own experiences.

@@celt67 Freddie did not really write songs about sexuality in a direct or overt manner, that people would quickly understand it, the only example might be Liar (but it is not so easy to understand the meaning of Liar). I think Bohemian Rhapsody is about the entertainment industry. You have to kill a part of yourself to be successful (that is the Faustian deal).You are under constant judgement. One day everyone will love you and next day the public might hate you. 'Scaramouche will you do the fandango" is someone asking or instructing a clown to do a dance. Freddie Mercury had great affinity for this type of idea, the idea that an entertainer needs to set aside their emotions to entertain the crowd. The song It's A Hard Life (with some similar chords to Bohemian Rhapsody) beings with the opera aria Vesti La Giubba (put on your costume). It is the story of a clown that has to go and perform just after discovering his wife is cheating on him. Freddie liked this idea of being "the great pretender" (which he also covered). (I have version of Vesti La Giubba with English subtitles on my channel if anyone is interested to understand more of the context)
