You should scratch in some inch markers along the handle of your net. My big fish never leave the water. I put their nose up against the inside of the rim at the head of the net, straighten the fish out, and read off the length on the handle. It's easy to scratch the numbers too. You can blacken the scratches with a fine point felt tip pen and then coat with polyurethane or varnish. By the way, I love your videos. They are both real and real inspiring!
Boy that feels good, doesn’t it? The fish you see in my profile pic was caught just upstream of that spot. Catch one fish like that, on that stretch, and your trip is a success. Awesome.
Great video, reminiscent of your early ones, with more artsy intros. High expectations result in spotty results. Looks like the opposite, reduced expectations, gave you the chance at one of the most beautiful wild browns I’ve ever seen. You seized the opportunity!
That’s truly a Brutus!! I’m gonna wear out this video! Great video even before the big hookup. You basically got what you wanted. You said one or two fish. Well, this one is definitely equivalent to about 18 average trout or more! So, I’d guess 22 1/4” er . It’s gotta be a 6 lber. The way your fishing lead up to this whale being hooked is special. Switching to the stone was a very big key move in getting this thing to take. Apparently it didn’t want the dry fly. Sometimes they do both. Perfectly videoed! Great job Dan! You deserved a fish like this. You fish often and fish hard. The Trout Gods are watching! Now go get out there and get another beast! Thanks for this epic video. As always, tightlines.
Your ability to catch trout is fantastic and your fishing videos are so well done. I've been fishing the Battenkill for 45 years and they are in there. I remember 35 years ago Encon told me about a 30" named Walter in the Trophy section. I've had some super exciting experiences there.
An absolute stunner Dan!!!!!! Yes!!!!!! Lost one pretty close to that size on the Farmington few weeks ago, but so amped you brought your to net. Congrats man, Chris from CT
What? I’ve been more than ready!? Haha. Ok. Pop some homemade popcorn and melted butter poured over it and of course garlic salt and lemon pepper , tomorrow night!!! Thanks Dan. I’ll be ready.
Scottie !!!! Hey I’m glad you took a peak at this ! Tremendous experience! Delaware system next! Hopefully fish together down there sometime this summer !
Dan !!!When I saw the girth on that fish and the mouth open, I thought one thing. That fish has been feeding on mice. My guess is 22 3/4" and over 5 1/2 lbs. Congratulations Dan. That fish is in the same league as the famous "Barkeater"
Ooooooo I’m sure a couple mice, chipmunks, frogs, other trout, all have lost their life to her! She was a big healthy female with a rich diet! I think that WBT Stonefly was just enough of a meal to interest her!!!! Thanks man
That was a true beauty. I caught one similar years ago on the Middle Fork American River - longish but more wide than long. Mine was 21" and this looks about the same, and I think yours may be even a bit fatter. Way to keep working it deep until you got him to bite. I'm looking forward to my family's trout fishing trip this summer (my first time trout fishing in 10 years as I've been overseas).
That sounds like a great memory! Man I think any wild trout above 14 inches is incredibly cool!!! Keep me Updated with your fishing adventures! Message me on Instagram if you’d like, tight lines!
First of all, well done Dan! You did everything right with this fish.. I even like the moment you took a break to stay calm :) When a fish swims away like this one you know you did a great job with the fish! The best part about this fish isn't even the length... this was a beast of a fish because of how thick and heavy it was! I've caught 20" trout that look like they could have been eaten by this one. 😂Very health fish that is a true trophy! I do disagree with one thing you said... "This is the biggest brown I'll ever catch". I think there are more fish like this and bigger in your future! Awesome video man and well done man!!! Also... love your approach to this spot. It is definitely a stalking pool with smart fish.
Look at that butter bar!!! Nice fish man really nice. Way to keep it cool and get that fish in the net. I've seen and lost a few big ones by rushing and trying to get them in the net lol ( length on fish 22.5 )
Ive Lived on the battenkill and black creek my whole life . There are some smokers in there just gotta walk em down . 26 5/8in 7.86 lbs is my pb .out the battenkill. Still searching a 30 incher .
Amazing fish brother!! Gorgeous color! Guessing 22". It was fantastic to see you compose yourself and keep your cool and not horse that beauty! Great video as always!
My guess is 22.5” for length of that tank, congrats. Also, I can relate to your “trout fever” when you saw the riser, kinda like “buck fever”, that’s why we fish/hunt, that anticipation and excitement
Really enjoying your videos and that was a gorgeous fish! I'm moving to Arlington (from Boulder, CO) in just over a month and can't wait to fish the Battenkill.
I would say a solid 22-23 for sure! One great looking fish!!! Gotta invest in a tape measure, because it stinks when you catch giants and never get a true size. I’ve done that a couple of times, and wish I had a tape 😂. Carry one on me at all times now. Tight lines
@@DownstreamDownrange you could get a rod ruler. It is a sticker that heats onto your rod and then you can just lay the fish right on your rod and get a quick measurement
Dan hey, it was GREAT meeting you ---especially at the time in which you were still somewhat shaking from the excitement of catching that big ass brown. So cool seeing the video. I did indeed have some luck that night....had a monster take and lost it immediately, likely due to 6X tippet on which I was utilizing for my top fly since the 3 days prior were nothing but super tough fishing. He must have bit it just right because the nymph came right off. I won't ever use 6X again on that river but it was super exciting and super cool meeting you that last night of my trip. I'll be purchasing some of your flies before going to Montana:) Hope to run into you again. Let me know if there is some way I can support you better here.....
Wowwwww! MAN!!!!! that’s so sick!!!! Regardless of success to trick another huge one!!! Fantastic to hear and I will absolutely be looking out for your order and I will add some flies (not even on the website) for you for free to the order!!!!
@@DownstreamDownrange yes sir, I did feel like it was the night that the fish would finally start biting and they did indeed :))) Thx very much Dan, I'll order soon and look fwd to it!!!
@@DownstreamDownrange I will be doing dry fly and nymph, mostly on the Blackfoot River near Missoula, and from what I can see, the water may be similar to the Farmington, minus tail water aspect. I've purchased quite a few dry salmon and stone flies and some heavy, large nymphs. If you are feeling "crafty" ....LOL....I could use more of the large salmon and stone fly nymphs. I do think some of the nymphs you've been fishing with are going to be a hit....in various sections of Blackfoot...and some other rivers that I'll try such as Rock Creek, Clark Fork and Missouri. I can't believe my wife is letting me go fish there for 2 whole weeks. This is about the coolest thing I'll have ever done.....
Nice fish! Reminds me of spots I used to fish near Plattsburgh, nice and isolated! I'm guessing somewhere between 18 and 23 inches...but the girth seemed even more impressive.
Congrats on such a beautiful fish. I love your approach to tackling that pool. Who knows, perhaps catching that tree early caused you to slow down a bit more and stay in that pool a bit longer than usual.
That impressive especially in that section of the ‘Kill’ - mostly stockers in that reach and the kayak hatches can be profiled but in my experience, this time of year is the best time to catch the wild guys on C&R side. Nice fish!
Dude this spot is no secret. One of the most fished/paddled spots on the entire river and I’d rather point people in this direction than to some of the lesser traveled locations. That really is a gem of a fish and I’ll be sure to keep quiet when I see you at the secret spots 😉
@@dmopa1 I know it’s not a secret but you gotta try and realize my following and if the name got out of would quickly look like the salmon river. Just gotta respect it and not give any hints and help…. For those that know they know but there’s no need to attract 500 people there this afternoon…. I will continue to delete any and all comments that I think potentially expose certain things…. I thought you would be much happier to know I don’t blast out names and locations
@@s.pepper1833 lmao…. Those who know…kno… and those who want to go full detective can ultimately know….but I’m not going to just blabber the name right out
What a fantastic Brown I'm guessing 23 and a 1/2 to 24" congrats on your PB Definitely going to check out your site and get some flies just getting back into fly fishing haven't done it for 35 years But I do fish the adderandex a few times a year with ultra light tackle Great videos brother
Beautiful fish! Glad to see you had such an amazing experience. I'm guessing its 21 1/2". I'm curious about your 9' 5wt nymphing set-up. Are you using a euro line with a mono leader?
Fulllllll mono rig setup for the euro rod! I do have a video out on that whole entire thing! Check it out on my Channel! Lots of people asking about the 5W. I’ll do an update on that soon!
I read once when asked what he does, Bruce Lee said he's a martial artist, he only acts to pay the bills. On that day my friend, you were first, a fisherman. Let that sink in.
I've been slamming big browns on the spinner all month. Heading to the battenkill today to try out this particular spinner thats been working everywhere from Montana to NY. Definitely want to learn how to fly fish though. Nice catch in the video. Solid of the kayakers to go behind you.
@@DownstreamDownrange Thanks man. Battenkill was still high and moving fast. Another week of no rain and it should be perfect. Gonna hit smaller rivers and creeks until then.
