Mark Rippetoe and Starting Strength Seminar Staff Coaches answer questions from seminar attendees during the Q and A session at the end of the seminar. Rippetoe proposes that no one questions the SS method more than SS coaches and staff. Leg length discrepancies, strength imbalances, and special populations are also discussed.

Damn you, Rippetoe! You made my 81-year-old grandma strong and now she won't stop jumping over our house. Going after her and getting her to get inside every evening is a huge pain in the ass now.

Give her some 300-400 lb squats 3X5 - she won't jump for days after the session!

Squat and deadlift technique of rippetoe(starting strength) is undoubtedly the best. Blindly follow the cues and see yourself hitting new PRs with proper programming.

Press technique advocated by SS is also light years ahead of anybody else's teaching method.

I am a 70% disabled vet. my legs are uneven enough that I wear orthotics with a lift in my left shoe. my left leg gets injured while squatting quite often whenever I start squatting over 330 or so - generally hamstrings but today a quad down around the teardrop. perhaps I need to offset my stance?

I suggest going to the SS forums and giving them more information than that. Wish you luck!

So the short-femured foot goes in front when the stance is staggered, in order to square up the pelvis?
@paullanctot4486
@paullanctot4486 6 лет назад
Big Will you want the pelvis to be square so that would have the long femur leg would be forward. I could be wrong but I can see where having the long femur leg back would exasperate the issue. Keeping the feet together and the knees even would cause the short femur side to pull the hip sideways toward the short side to compensate. If you shift the short side back it allows the hips to stay square.

She's just an in shape feminine woman as every woman should be. 80% of women could probably look about as good as her if they had their heads screwed on. But sadly the terminates of feminism and fat-acceptance have dined long and well on the U.S female population. So now women like her are increasingly rare.

Would really like to find a well trained Starting Strength coach in Cincinnati. When I try Rip's methods for squats, my back hurts for days.
@NarimanMirzaei

Record yourself and do a form check on SS forum. Without seeing you I have to guess that either the bar shifts forward during your decent or your back goes into flexion when you hit the bottom.
@rorybyrne3977
@rorybyrne3977 6 лет назад
i did what Nariman advises and have been quickly able to get my weight up on the squat. mark out the foot distance if you need to, film yourself, and i have started to do the squats with a really low weight/no bar at all so it gets into my head how low I should be going. picking the spot on the floor to look at helps me too.

This was one of there better videos.. Less trying to be funny and covered important issues.. Lifted for years with difference in shin length which really fucked up my progress

A shoe shim is an easy fix for a tibial discrepancy.... No. There's nothing easy about adjusting to the shim. 1 flat foot, one hyper-arched foot. Years of compensation and muscle imbalances thrown out the window for a new form.... Then there's the fact that you send commands and receive feedback through two different lengths of nerves when communicating with the ground reaction force. Internal pressure too, is different between each leg, despite the shim. Anyone who thinks it's an easy fix must either NOT have an LLD, or is simply not very self aware. Even so, Mark is correct. There is no other article that I'm aware of, but his, that addresses the LLD issue so thoroughly. One of these days, I hope to add to the knowledge base. BTW, I'm lucky in one or two ways. I have a GREAT cobbler, and thanks to him and Mark Rippetoe, I've been working on adjusting to my shim.

Hi, I'm sorry you suffer from this also. I recently found out I have a 4.1 mm discrepancy, with the right being shorter (hip is lower). I can visually see the difference in the mirror, however slight, and it has definitely thrown off my balance and body mechanics as a whole. I have back pain always in my mid and upper back. Also forward head posture. Skinny fat. Want to power lift eventually! Anyways, how do I find out if a discrepancy is tibial or femoral? My chiropractor was going to just fit me with a wedge. I feel like this is something I should make sure is diagnosed and corrected carefully.

Kijanu Rivs the starting strength program is for novices. You can lift weights for years and still be a novice. Oh and if these lifts are real, well done man
@ConKen77
@ConKen77 6 лет назад
Desmond Osmund very real lifts. The mental aspect was and is the hardest part of my training. To push and believe I could do more. Thanks for the kind words.
@duncano187
@duncano187 6 лет назад
Kijanu Rivs why is it not wise to start to L.P. when you squat 405? Surely by getting to 410 for 3x5 he's proven he could still utilise L.P. and thus used his time in the most time efficient manner. Yeah L.P. really teaches you to dig down at the end. Good work man
@ConKen77
@ConKen77 6 лет назад
Kijanu Rivs I was doing 531 for a while and did my own thing based on how my body responded. My plan was, Mon- legs, Tues - back, Wed - chest, Thurs - arms, Fri - deadlifts. Mon-Thurs I would have 3-4 exercises and do keeping reps around 12-15 as heavy as I could for 3-4 sets. I'm no freak (I don't think) I enjoy training and have always had a desire to be strong. The barbells probably know me better than I know myself. Mindset and a solid program make all the difference in the world. Now if I could just get my food figured out and apply the same drive to eat good I may get to an even better place. Finished LP in November, Holidays and sickness hit the house Dec - Jan so training slowed so I am now doing a Barbell Medicine program (GPP conditioning) to get back to 199lbs, then another Barbell Medicine program lined up (hypertrophy), then I plan to do yet another Barbell Medicine program (The Bridge) feel free to follow along on the IG. fikejeff I will do better about posting my training. (not typically my thing)
@ConKen77
@ConKen77 6 лет назад
Kijanu Rivs I don't think so, but you are welcome to your opinion. like I said I am in my 30's I think the genetic potential is just that. However if I could go back and train teenager me with the knowledge I currently have, I could see how that could have an effect on my training outcome now in my 30's. Meaning I am not in my prime for developing and actually reaching my maximal genetic potential. I'll take where I am for now but don't think I'm not eyeballing and plotting how to get 2-5lbs more.

Every time I try to Press the same way Rip teaches it, my back hyperextends and it really hurts. How can I utilize the hip movement without losing the neutrality of my spine?
@skan8
@skan8 6 лет назад
Tense your whole lower body,keep your knees locked and make a more sudden shorter movement.

How do you bring your hips in without compromising your back? It seems my upper body is tense but my lower body has to bend in order to bring my hips in and back
@skan8
@skan8 6 лет назад
The more you tense your legs and core , the more stable it gets , just make sure to make it sudden and short . My revelation was when I locked my knees hard.
