You are a wonderful teacher, i am 70 with MS and learning is becoming very difficult 😣 Your clear speech was so wonderful to listen to thank you, i have wanted to know the difference for sometime! Now to get busy with my papers!!! 😊 You made my day perhaps my week or Month😂
Please share master board. Thank you for this clear understanding. I too am new to this. Yet I’m an artist and have been painting for 30 years. Crafts are outside of my natural ability and your videos are most helpful.
I started scrapbooking 20 years ago and then card making; honestly I wasn't really great. I didn't have that design eye to make layouts. I've finally found my way to mixed media, and it's my happy place. I love that other people "get it" and love gluing paper as much as I do!! Found my paper people!! Thank you!!
Good information, thank you. Regarding the orientation of your Japanese text, I use text from various languages that don’t rely on the Latin alphabet, and I never worry about which direction they face. That’s because I use them as graphic elements rather than written language. I do the same with bits of English text (and numbers) as well. Backwards, forwards, up, down, doesn’t matter. I’m looking at the characters as shapes. Funny story: I recently completed a collage using a portion of a Japanese newspaper as part of the background. After it was all done, an acquaintance told me a portion of the text was an ad for constipation relief. 😂
I have a question. So I found an old somewhat unused notebook that I decorated with papers and little trinket things I found lying around in my home on to, and I also make it a daily journal of sorts by putting receipts, wrappers, dried flowers, essentially physical memories of that day so that I can keep it all in one journal. I called it a junk journal because I was inspired by videos of junk journaling to do mine, and these things and the decorations on it were essentially junk lying around in my home, but now I'm not sure. Is it actually a scrapbook? Was it a scrapbook all this time? 😲 I'm new to this hobby but I enjoy it a lot. Love your videos they're so informative!
For me, I buy a pretty junk journal, and then I journal in it and embellish even more. I haven't mastered the art of making the book at the level I want yet. I even have a junk recipe journal that I am using to compile my favorite diabetic recipes, hoping the journal will inspire me to eat better. 😊 A girl can hope.
You dont have to keep them seperate. I do all three in every book I make. I writed down thoughts or something that happens. I save tickets, pictures in same book. I sit down and draw, paint, sew add papers, fearhers etc. put a sample of a new technique in it. I make books for holidays and only put stuff for those holidays in those books. Some contain 5 years for that holiday in the same book. Its your book. Do what you like in it!
I really enjoy your down to earth videos and how you talk us through your thought process. I have numerous supplies and would appreciate your sharing how you come up with your cute little box with a variety of small papers in various sizes?
Yes. Thank you so much for this. ❤ For the sake of ease of describing my paper crafts to friends and family, I'm just going to call it all "collage journaling" because that will make more sense to them than "gluebook" and it describes the intent of my craft on a given day. Craft stores are great for papers, especially the scrapbook aisle, always check the bargain bins, also websites like stationerypal have a lot of thin papers, stickers / sticker flakes, washi etc for very inexpensive if you have a specific theme or style in mind!
This is such a great video ~ you have a way of making things easy to understand. And yes, I would be happy and grateful to see your video on Masterboards and how to make and use them. Thank you kindly. 😊
Thanks Margarete! Being new to junk journaling it’s nice to have someone show things and tell things that maybe should be obvious but aren’t. The lingo, the how and why. It’s nice to have that talked about. I enjoyed your videos very much. ❤️💜💚
Thank for taking the time to explain everything so well. Now I know that my journal is definitely not a glue book. Junk journal - uncertain - as I create a page and no 2 are alike and it is definitely not a sticker journal. I'm a cardcrafter and are using my dies, paper and stamps to create the journal page - still confused - but it is quiet 'me' time.
Dear Margaret ❤ so many varieties of home made books. And yes with scrapbooks, At first I thought they were more like a home made photo album with specific layouts etc, and the therevis the really old fashioned kind when you just chuck anything you like in. Glue here is really expensive. Bostik, blue glue sticks with the green lizard is about $4Au. Per stick, i also like to buy pva glue in bulk as it works out more economical. Also love double sided tape for plastic stuff. Im always finding pattern papers in thrifted magazines. This a very useful video. Thanks so much. Happy crafting ❤🇭🇲
I'm a new subscriber, and new to paper crafts. Thank you for explaining the difference between junk journals and glue books. I would also like to see a video about Master Boards.
Thank you! Funny I've been doing these for a a little while. But when people ask me, I really didn't know how to explain except, it's Fun..lol. You really are a good teacher, explain things well. Always enjoys your video.❤
I love how your little junk journal turned out! Thanks for sharing it. I need to go back over your videos so please forgive me if you have already covered this: how do you recommend overcoming perfectionism as a barrier when collaging?
Just got a Zutter on eBay-many are listed in the $20-25 range, and once I got the hang of it I loved it! I love how I can bind all sorts of random pieces together. Your videos were some of the first I saw about glue books and junk journals back in 2020 and I really, really appreciate you! ❤
I used a browine box because Dolly Parton was on the front. I cut her out and glued it to a page, added some stamping, and a memory of cooking with my mom. Literally, I think anything goes. It's yours be free. ❤❤❤❤
When I saw your receipts and canceled checks in there, I immediately thought of things that have been passed down from my grandmother, I have some receipts like that that I’m going to find and pull out so I can put them in my junk journal. I love this idea. I think I’ll make photocopies of them first! I could dedicate a journal to my grandma using her receipts and pictures and cards and postage stamps. Thank you for this wonderful video.
Fun find of the century! I found in an antique store THREE completed BLUE CHIP STAMP books!👏👏👏 I have no idea what to do with them! Suggestions? I only paid $8.00 for them all!
Fabulous! Your videos are always so helpful and inspiring. So many questions :-) ... Do you have a tutorial for the diamond stitching pattern shown on the spine of your junk journal around 01:44. Yes to a master board video. Also for glue, I wondered if you have ever tried Coccoina Natural glue for your paper crafting? I love it. It's made mostly from potato flour and was created in France in the 1920s. Solvent-free, Non-toxic and Acid-free and it's 100% biodegradable so can be safely composted. I like it because it glides on so well and kind of melts onto paper and in all honesty, because the smell is pretty lovely too 🤩 I'm looking forward to more on the Zutter. Thanks again for such a useful video!
I'd love to see you explain why make a masterboard and cut it versus making 6 or 8 cards. I have trouble cutting them so I end up generally making individual cards and not a masterboard, but maybe there is something I'm missing. :)
Great discussion and explanations as usual. I love both junk journals and glue books, but I have discovered that I love glue books more. Thank you once again for very clear explanations.❤️
I use Elmer’s Glue All for all things paper. Pages get pressed under books overnight. A bit of warping gives it a found hidden in a log in the woods feeling. Water clean up. I keep a damp cloth near me and have fun spreading the glue around with my fingers, tactile.
Thanks Margarete ❤ I have never heard of glue books now I’m thinking of maybe doing a small one. I have journals with a specific purpose but like the idea of these glue books.
Margaret’s. Love you work…I am curious where in the world you find such incredible ephemera? I have some great things but yours are FABULOUS! Love all that you share! I have been a collage artist for years and still learn good tips and tricks from you! I also just joined your collage club not long ago! 💖
Thanks Margarete. I'm a new subscriber and I love your instructional videos! Question regarding the Japanese text on the spine: if you don't read/understand non-Roman alphabets, since you are using these texts as a design element, does it matter to you if they are right side up or upside down?
I try to use text right side up when I can't read the alphabet, because it does feel respectful. I look for numbers to help me decide the paper orientation. But I frequently put scraps upside down when I can read them, so my eye is less likely to be caught by a random word. It makes sense for me.
Thank you for the info! I think it cleared up the differences among the types of books. I've seen some online that people called a combination. The great thing is we can make them whatever we want! I'd love a video about if you didn't already do one.
I have owned a Bind It All since they came out in, say, 2012 was it? Anyway, a long time. I preordered it from my local scrap and stamp shop (remember those?)😂 I have used it over and over again for hundreds of times since then and that same one still works, still punches holes sharply, including chipboard, no problems. There is a bit of a learning curve. Practice first! And remember… it’s paper…do overs are pretty easy!❤
@@MargareteMiller you have inspired me and others so so much! You validate my efforts as an artist and I appreciate all you do for all of us, much love and thanks.🙏🏻
Thank you for this video. I found your channel recently and got interested in creating a glue book. As mentioned in a previous comment, I hurt my back and am stuck at home. Fortunately I can sit up now. I ordered a few beautiful items from your Etsy store and have many items I have collected through my travels to Paris (old postcards and books). I will order the glue sticks from Amazon and start my glue book. So glad I found your channel. My days will be brighter while I recuperate.
You've done a good job of explaining that junk journals are all about the process of making and glue books are all about gluing things on pages. Well done! Thank you.
I just did a massive craft room clean up and discovered I have way too much paper (all varieties) and have decided to start trying glue books, art journals, and maybe junk journals. I found your channel in the process of trying to work out what was what! When I was a kid, I did scrapbooking that resembles what we consider a glue book nowadays. I'm Australian, so I am not sure if the definition changed depending on where you lived? I have also done the modern version of scrapbooking, hence why I have so much paper! 😂 Thank you for your videos, Margarete, they are really informative.
I recently found you!! I love the videos. I would love to see a masterboard video. I’m learning so much and am also confused! Lol. How do you know what to keep as your stash and how do you organize it? Thank you. Beth B in Sarasota, FL
Recently I've been working in a vintage gardening journal and making collages in it. It was a hardback book and I trimmed some of the pages out and I've made several collages with some space for writing and pockets. Would this be a gluebook or an altered book?
I started using junk journals as glue books when I discovered that I don't enjoy journaling. But the options for glue books are endless: I've used appliance manuals, vacation brochures, index cards, children's books, post cards, soft cover recipe books, alteration tickets, old calendars. I "bind" the loose papers with 1-inch circle rings or staples. The beauty of it is to use what you find, and always remember that it's yours and you're creating for your own happiness. There are no rules.
@@DevonLass The junk journals I've used as glue books challenge my collaging creativity because of the variety of papers, but the final effect is so pleasing.
Here is my take on that topic xD please, dont take it as an attack, just sharing thoughts. Tbh i think this "rules" about names are unnecessary. You also could make a junk journal out of a weekly planer. There is no junk journal police thats going to tell you what you should call your journal project or what you use in it. Most projects will be a mix anyway. I get it, its nice sometimes to have a name for everything. But i think it would be better to teach: "do what you want, without pressure and judgment from others. Dont let yourself get bothered by naming conventions. Here are some examples of doing a creative journal: use an old book, make a book from scraps, use a theme, dont use a theme, do art in it, dont do art in it, just glue stuff in, keep memories etc." For some people its about the process, but nor for all. For some, creating a junk journal is higly emotional and private, for others its just a beautiful diary that they bought. Others use only junk to create a piece, others use everything. What would you call a journal using a real cover but selfmade signatures? Is it a altered book? Is it a junk journal? I dont know why i went on a rant haha xD but it was not ment to be aggressive:) Happy weekend to everyone:)
Which topic? I covered several. And xD? I don’t understand so I can’t be offended or not offended 🙃 I’m not defining rules. People ask questions. They have been asking hundreds of questions, often the same one repeatedly. “What is a gluebook”. I’ve taken the time in this video to explain. I’m not creating some rigid structure of my own definitions.
I would love it if you would share more about making a masterboard. Your videos break down Junk Journaling into smaller easily digestible chunks. Thank you for making and sharing these.
Thank you so much for your videos. I am curious about your approach to vintage papers. When I saw the state of some gorgeous post cards at an antique shop, I couldn’t risk bringing them into my house for fear of bringing all that mold into my library/studio. What are your thoughts on it?
If I acquire something that looks too gross, I’ll throw it out. I’ve never had any papers with mold, but if I did, putting them in direct sunlight for a few hours would be good. I have left things outside over night 👍🏼
So the junk journal or glue book (the one with the Floratine paper) just wondering how that one was bound? It is not the spiral bound one. It looks like two staples?
the small junk journal is also a gluebook with a topic, isn't it? Junk journal in my opinion is more of what the name says...A journal...memory keeping by using things which would have went in the bin. Tea bags, wrapping paper, tags from clothes, napkins, business cards, ...
I've started over 20 books trying to to make them perfect but I decided I can do as I feel I just mix all 3 into one really there's no rule to makin a journal, scrap book, glue book. It's your own and there no law 😅
I live in Arizona. I cannot use some glue sticks. Our hot dry summers just dries up the glue so bad that my projects have fallen apart a few years later. Just a caution regarding glue sticks.
