I've been there. I spent over an hour drawing one hand over and over. At the end I was like what am I doing, that was stupid. I took a reference photo of my own hand, traced it in 5 seconds, stylized in my style, and moved on ;-)

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The whole "be comfortable with your style" thing has given me such a sudden burst of confidence and inspiration! Your advice is so easy to follow and it's not just the same shpiel that everyone else gives. Keep up the good work! If I may ask a question, how do authors go across taking mental health breaks? (also you can substitute my name for something like frosty if this ever gets put on a video ^^')

I appreciate that, thank you. I'm glad you're digging the content and it's proving useful to you. The mental health breaks are very important, take them when you need them. I'll think more about that subject, it's really tricky and almost has to be answered uniquely to each creator. Super helpful as always. I don't know if this is a common situation, but as someone who is primarily a writer then deciding to jump into drawing my own comics and straight into digital for the very first time, your tips on sketching and coloring really helped me shorten the learning gap. Things like rotating the canvas or using the lighting adjustments for shadowing that may be common sense to most. I find myself referring back to your videos, even when there are a lot of other tutorials and references I watch too. Maybe for those like me who suddenly jumped into it when the short story contest announcement happened, I know I'd love to see a video with like your top quick tips in your digital comic process that people often overlook, or you personally didn't know when you started. I'm sure Croppy will make another appearance haha! Your explanation of your experiences have been helpful too. How you handle trolls is also funny. I saw it in action in the comments section of the video with your 7 year journey in comics before you pitched and became featured on Webtoon. You handled that with grace, and the troll never answered. Masterclass. I guess I'm a little afraid about how to deal with the way it will consume my emotional energy if somebody says negative (malicious and non-constructive) things about the thing I drew or wrote. Was there ever a time you had to confront that kind of thing, and how did you come out of it? Was it super easy for you to get over it, or did you stare at the ceiling for four hours or what?

You and me are the same! I wanted to be a writer, never really thought about being an artist. Decided later in life to pick up art specifically to draw my stories so I could be a one person creative team. I had been in bands and tried to film movies, dealing with people was hard for me. so yeah, that's how I got here. I'll add those types of videos to my list. I think they are good ideas. As for negative people, yea, of course it sucks. But this is how I see it, there is nothing those people can say that I haven't said to myself. I've mentally attacked my own art so viciously. I mean, I've near talked myself out of being an artist and that's without anyone's feedback but my own. So yeah, reading their stuff is child's play ;-) When I hear about other artists telling me how they are being judge by other people, that hurts me the most, cause I hate to think that an artist may quit because of someone else. It's hard to internalize, but the trolls are dealing with something, maybe their own insecurities about their art or justifying some choice they made. Another thing also, think about some famous person you admire or look up to or that's at the top of their game, if you search twitter, I am sure you can find trolls bashing your idol. So it's like what are the trolls even doing, just passing on their self-hatred. So yeah, feel sorry for them. Hopefully that makes sense.

@@walterostlie It does make sense to look at it that way, thank you. I think it takes me some time to train myself to think that way. I feel like I still treat strangers on the internet as people like me. So if they tell me something negative, I'm often just replaying the situation in my head. It bothers me for days. But I'll remember what you said for sure. Thank you for writing your reply!! It must have taken some time out of your busy schedule. I found your words very reassuring. And it's also oddly flattering when you say we're alike in some aspect (I also work in the tech industry). Other than Lore Olympus for which I found the Webtoon advertisement, Haxor was one of the first Webtoons I read. So I already looked up to you, and to know you went through similar struggles really gives me the courage to keep trying. Hope you found the suggestions for the video ideas helpful too. There's nothing to say you can't do that. Depending on how you mention them, it may be a good idea and good manners to let the creators know before. Obviously, you don't want to use too much of their characters or story where it became re-purposing. But mentioning it shouldn't be a big deal.

Hey Walter thank you so much for all your videos about webtoon ! I have a question : what about the language we use in our webcomic ? I have a story for the webtoon short story contest. Is it better to post it in english so more people can read/understand it or can i stick with my native language (i'm french eheh) ? I think english is better but i'm not that fluent...
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
I think there are more English readers. Do you have any friends who are native English speakers or maybe a little more fluent? You can ask them just to look it over quickly and if anything pops up they can tell you. I have a Swedish friend who always asked me, but he had really short comics, so it only took a minute. You could also post on reddit comic collaborators and someone may help. Also penciljack.com forums. Nice people there

Hello! I have several questions that have been bugging me for some time now. It's about the exclusivity of your webtoon when you're featured. What exactly should remain "exclusive"? Is it only the actual comic's image files, or the story/characters/setting? Can you still make another story with the same characters and setting and do whatever you want with it or is it impossible due to exclusivity? Along the same lines, can you still for example share "sneak peaks" or stream the making of a featured webtoon? And what about merch and derivative content (like side stories or games)? That's a lot of questions, I hope it won't be too long to answer them, thank you!
@petramatkovic4122
@petramatkovic4122 4 года назад
Lulullia I'd like to know as well
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
Characters, story, spin-offs are all contained in the exclusivity. Webtoon doesn't want to be in the business of haggling over rights. spin-offs/etc dilute that. You can prolly do sneak peaks and streams of non-final product, but you'd want to ask first, things change. Merch, you can make your own, but it has to be your own original designs. Games would fall under Webtoon's arena.
@lulullia
@lulullia 4 года назад
@@walterostlie OH MY GOD, I'm so glad I asked! The main character of my Short Story Contest submission is one of my dearest OCs, and one of the main characters of my baby story project! Does that mean that if I win, I'll need to give up on him? I'm happy I'm still in the sketching stage, I can still change the MC's name and tweak his colors o-o" And my fantasy setting, will it also become exclusive to Webtoon? Thanks a lot for your fast reply o-o
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
@@lulullia The short story is a different beast than a normal featured comic, so the contract is most likely different. I don't think the contest winner would need to allow for as many rights as a featured creator would. However, if you win, you have the choice to sign the contract or not. If you don't sign, you will forfeit the win, but retain full control of your character/story. But you'd want to read over the contract and have friends/family/lawyer look over it with you.
@lulullia
@lulullia 4 года назад
@@walterostlie I see. I still prefer minimizing the risks and change my character... It would really be a shame to refuse the prize after so much hard work owo Thanks for your advices, I'll just hope that the setting/worldbuilding concepts will stay away from this exclusivity thing haha, as I'm planning to add a "compendium" as fifth episode to help the reader understand the world more uwu

One question. What are panels??? I've never been able to find out n its confusing. Also When do comics usually get featured??? Big fan tho!
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
Comics can get featured when the comic or the creator catches the attention of the webtoon editors. Either by hustle, popularity, or just being really good. There is no set time-limit. A panel is a single moment in your story. They are usually the things that are contained inside a square in comics. I explain it right here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1rDMHstkQ0s.html

It really depends on your schedule and how long it takes you to draw an episode. Pretend like you needed to take an entire month off from creating, how many episodes would you need as backup for the month you took off and also time to re-build the buffer again? Really the only way to not be tense is to have the entire come done before posting ;-)

Is it fine that I can't draw anatomy properly and want to use the models in clip studio paint for my comic?
@walterostlie

Yes, use whatever you can to make your comic come to life. If it's 3d models, photo reference, using sticks figures. Whatever.

Ya he creado 4 cómics. Si te refieres a archivos por episodio cómico, son 100 archivos, menos de 2mb cada uno, total menos de 20mb

Hi! Quick question: how much space should you put on average (in inches or centimeters) between panels? Thanks!
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
If we're just talking a basic panel to another basic panel, then maybe an inch. 300px. It will depend on dialogue and pacing. but that's a good starting point. Play around with it, see what you like, look at other webtoons you like.

Okay I've been thinking a lot about what happens when you're featured and you have to upload every week, and then you finish your project. Like you stop uploading because it's over? Do you have to tell webtoon that you're done? :1
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
If you're an original featured comic, you work directly through webtoon, they handle all the uploading, it's also in the contract how many episodes you'll have.

Hah, 50 panels per week. I mispoke. 50 episodes would be impossible.
