I'm a former radio personality. I saw Millie Jackson open for the Isley Brothers at the University of Dayton Arena back in the late 70's or very early 80's. She literally stole the show!!! On that particular night the legendary Isley Brothers got by on respect, and a massive catalog of hit records. But as far as showmanship, and stomping a stage is concerned, Millie should have closed that show! I have so much respect for her work! She was Hip Hop, before Hip Hop was ever thought about.👑💖
Great story---Thanks @NickBusbeeFunkSchoolRadio for sharing. I saw her in Atlanta, years ago!!!! her daughter with her....... nice treat!! Also had her dVd but I guess those are a thing of the past.... still thinks she's great!!
I am screaming 😆 🤣 😂 my parents played Millie Jackson and though I was innocent and didn't know what I was singing, I sung the lyrics with passion at 5 years-old 🤣🤣🤣
I was at the Atlanta Airport waiting for a layover flight, and I saw Millie. I straight fangirled!!! I wanted to walk over to her, and one of her band mates said "yeah, you can go over to her"!!! I was like 😮☺️🥰, and she was so warm and approachable, and she made an awesome comment about a pair of boots I had on... A day I will NEVER forget!!!
Mother and daughter look exactly alike. It's amazing. I would love to hear the difference of Ms. Millie career vs the more radio friendly careers who gained greater popularity. Her story has got to be awesome.
This interview would've been greater if not for all the talking heads on the right. No need for so many cohorts especially when they take away from the interview. Alas, Millie is A LEGEND!!! I could listen to her stories for ages.
I had all the Millie albums in high school....I now have all the music on CDs... Would love to see another live show.. Millie can work the mic and the stage..💯🔥👍 This is a frugal podcast, they don't give the guests water bottles.🙄 The original female GOAT..
Great to see Ms. Mille Jackson. Betty Wright and Millie Jackson were two amazing funky soul artist. We couldn't touch those albums in my parents house or else. The 60s and 70s music was the best.
Around 20 years ago, I was in a play with Millie. It was quite memorable because she was given a script but wanted to wing it when we got on stage. It was scary and exhilarating all at once. Fun lady!! 😂
Always loved Millie! Saw her performance with Paul Mooney opening at the Total Experience Nightclub in L.A. back in the day (the night Chaka Khan was in the audience)! She was amazing. Thank you Questlove for this interview.
Millie Jackson was ahead of her time. She was bold and sassy nasty all alone for years. Lil Kim, Nikki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion & Cardio B don't even know she's the Blueprint of what they doing now. Homage is due to Ms Millie Jackson 👏🏽👏🏽
..could not have said it better. Im pretty sure Lil' Kim and Fox' know her..Ive even heard Kim tip her cap to Millie. But them other ones?...nah..they wouldnt know Millie unless somebody introduced her to them. And at the end of the day, THEY NEED TO KNOW HER..AND BOW DOWN, FOR REAL.
What she said about the 2 year old song being nominated at the Grammys was deja Vu 💯! NO hate on Aretha, but now I understand why celebrities boycott. loved this 🖤🌟
My parents would not allow us to listen to Millie because it was for adults only. We knew she was off limits, when I became an adult I bought Mille's clean audio tape. I loved every song. I still quote to younger people and others that love is a dangerous game to play when you are not playing by the rules. Then let them know that's a Millie Jackson song. 💖
Millie said that back in the day, they wouldn't allow allow her to sing "A Child of God" because it has the word "God" in it, so she ended up singing a Gladys Knight song instead. 🤣
that song is a protest song. And it is JUST AS RELEVANT as Mayfield's "People Get Ready"...or Nina Simone's "Young, Gifted and Black" or "Gil Scott Heron's "the Revolution Will Not Be Televised".
Millie Jackson is a beast! My dad loved her music and played it often.......I can remember hearing I know you gotta chick on da side goddammit I know you gotta chick on da side.....
@@nyotauhura5646 correct however on Millie’s live album before she sings the Phuck U Symphony, she shouts out TPS who were in the audience at that show and she sings the chorus , so the commenter could very well recall Ms Millie singing chick on the side 💜
Oh Ok ...then I'll say it then! HOW awkward to have a legend sitting there for what seemed like FOREVER while a cast of .....respectfully ...unknown folk talk about a lot of nothing...with a LEGEND sitting there.....having to participate in a sort of grade school roll call....put on the spot to make up nursery rhymes....It was uncomfortable to watch a LEGEND SITTING THERE....a woman of a certain maturity having to seemingly be made to be LAST priority on the itinerary again as we hear about folks who are respectfully unknown talk about stuff not very interesting ....with a LEGEND SITTING THERE unannounced for what seemed like forever ...Sorry I have to say it how it really felt I am watching my lady Miss MIllie Jackson the legendary just being ignored & I don't overstand why this was done this way! She's not just a legend but an elder too ...NO I did not even get to where she was finally acknowledged because I could barely watch her sit there ...just sitting there it seemed almost disrespectful. So I had to stop the video and start the comment sorry if it is offensive but this was rather offensive as well! WHY is Millie Jackson sitting there waiting to be even just introduced ??? YES she was graceful enough to just sit there but DYAAAM ...lets treat our elder legends a little BETTER than this guys really! Sorry I HAD TO say it & will just deal with any flack for that! .
Let's give Millie Jackson HER props. Don't erase her agency as a WOMAN with this "non-binary" whatever ish! This ONLY happens with pioneering (and often underrated) WOMEN. You don't see a bunch of folks erasing MALES this way. It's not inclusive.
QL and Ms Millie had smoke, that's why. Kiesha provided a bit of reel-in for her momma. Folk were walking on eggshells with this interview. Anything could have happened. Ms Millie is a legend both in music and in personality.
My mother used to be a big Millie Jackson fan, so when her tour came to our midwestern town, my mom got front roll seats to the concert for her, and my 18-year-old cousin. My mother said she picked my cousin out of the crowd and insulting him. The next day my mother threw away all her Millie Jackson albums and told us what happened. After watching this I realize she is known for her foul mouth, so I don't know what my mom was thinking taking my cousin with her.
PHONTE IS MY FAVORITE RAPPER IM THE NIGGA THAT WAS AT THE SIGNING AT RASPUTIN RECORDS OR AOMEBA RECORDS IN BERKELEY BACK IN 2005 WHERE I HAD ALL OF THE JUSTUS LEAGUE CD'S AND YOU WAS LIKE OH SHIT HE GOT ALL OF OUR SHIT INCLUDING THE MIXTAPES
Quest, love the show. The only thing, do the show with just you. The 3 people keep interrupting and sounds like they weren't very knowledgeable about music abd didn't do their homework.😊
What she said about aretha is completely wrong aretha released two album in 1974 aretha never went two years without releasing a new record in the 60d or 70d
