Quick and Dirty Quilting -When You Just Need a Quilt in a Hurry

This video is going show you how to make a quilt in a day using some questionable quilting methods. There will be very little piecing especially if you start with a panel. There will be no binding. This is for one of those emergency situations in which the recipient of your quick and dirty quilt is more interested in the theme than the intricate work put into a pieced quilt. A panel would be preferred, but just a yard of fabric you like with some coordinating fabric will work just as well. No long arm needed - we will be quilting it on our domestic machines. And I use the term quilting very loosly.
If you have any problems with the sound, put your other ear bud in. I am using a new microphone and new editing software and I obviously have no idea what I am doing. Thank you for your patience.
WARNING WARNING WARNING: If you are apalled by the thought of a quilt with no binding, very little piecing and minimal quilting, you will not want to watch this video.
I need a quilt in a hurry. My granddaughter is carrying a Jimmy Hendrix blanket into daycare for naptime. She is 5, not 25. I need some quick and dirty quilting technique to make her a new 'quilt' before she goes back to daycare. Now don't get me wrong, I have no problem with Jimmy Hendrix. From what I understand he was an excellent guitar player. However, my granddaughter is 5 and should have a blanket/quilt with Elmo or Elsa or Unicorns, not someone from 70's rock and roll. I had procurred the blanket and was going to hide it. Unfortunately, my daughter seized said blanket and absconded with it because she knew I was going to make it disappear until it was appropriate for my granddaughter. LOL She knows me all too well.

I am so excited to have found your channel! I am 67 years old and have a 67 -year-old stash that I’ve actually found out one through twice. I have been stewing about the fact that I might not be able to finish or use some of the sweet fabrics I got. Now you’ve given me enough good ideas and hopefully more to come so I can use some of it! Thanks again I will be back! Bye the way but noodle is genius!!!

You are a Hoot!! And the "quick & dirty" quilt is adorable! Pool noodles are so useful, aren't they? I LOVE what you did with the Chenille-It, the result is beautiful. I've been sewing for some 60-plus years and felt a little sorry for you when you had a little trouble closing the gap where you turned the quilt. So I thought I'd offer a little "quick & dirty" trick that might help you. First, I suggest you make your gap a bit less wide. Roughly half the width you did would still allow you to turn it right side out very easily. Secondly, and this is the neat part, begin sewing around your quilt edge a little differently. Lower your needle at your starting point and rotate the quilt so you can backstitch perpendicularly almost to the the edge with tiny stitches (1.5 works well). Then stitch forward to your starting point, pivot and stitch all around the edge as you normally would. When your reach your stopping point for the gap, repeat what you did at the beginning. Pivot, shorten your stitch length, backstitch perpendicularly to the edge with tiny stitches, then stitch forward to your seamline. Before turning your quilt right side out, give your seamline a really good pressing, and trim away that little length of batting just the width of your seam allowance. Now, once you've got it right side out, put your index fingers one each inside the quilt on each end of the gap and GENTLY pull. If you've done this correctly, the edges of the gap with turn under very neatly and straight all by themselves. Hit them with the iron and your're good to go. (Then go stick your tongue out at Murphy). Hope you like this little trick, I use it all the time for all types of sewing, not just quilts. And I hope I haven't offended you either, I just want to help.

I made one yesterday, wish I had used pool noodles..... anyway it was 2 yards of fabric each side as more of a throw and not sleeping quilt. My coworker us retiring and loves turtles, she may be getting double knee replacement so I thought yes a lightweight quilt with turtles. My lines were not straight but my husband said they look like waves leave it. He was correct. My coworker knows I am not perfect neither would be the quilt or any other thing I make would be perfect. I made a 30x40 cuddle soft baby blanket with this method. Glad it wasn’t any bigger! I don’t like sewing with that fabric! I think I lightly sprayed craft glue to secure my batting so it wouldn’t slip. I top-stitched and then quilted large stars. For my first attempt, I was happy with it. My second baby quilt didn’t go as well. The directional backing is sideways not top to bottom- like you mentioned in your video!! Live and learn but my grandson doesn’t care!! Really enjoy your videos. I can relate, scratch my head and laugh at my silly mistakes!!! As always, enjoyed watching your video! Have a great day April!

I appreciate your tip on the puckers. It had stopped me from completing 2 quilts where the tops are MANY YEARS done. I'm going to have to give it a try. Also never made a turned inside out quilt. I have fabric bought for charity or gifts...this is a good idea for it.

Puckers usually just disappear in the wash as long as you didn't wash the fabric before you started piecing with it. The unwashed fabric shrinks and the stitching is no longer too tight. It is like magic. LOL. Thank you for watching and don't let little mistakes slow you down - they just make you a better quilter. I must be like the BEST quilter ever!!! 😁. April

Wow thanks that is great to know!! I just quilted my first quilt and there are puckers everywhere/ feels so sloppy but I’m just moving on because it is for my son who isn’t going to care about my imperfections. I can’t wait to wash it once the binding is completed

My mom has 5 grandkids. She made them all quillows. It takes 3 different fabrics. 2 yds each. 1 for front, 1 for back, and 1 for pillow. You won't need a whole yd for pillow, but I guarantee that once you get home you'll change your mind and want the pillow fabric for front/back instead. My mom has made 30+ quillows for our family and friends so far. She is now working on the great-grandkids' quillows. I've gotten 1 so far. The 2nd one is on the table in her sewing room waiting to be finished. When fall comes she'll finish it. She just topstitches the pillow sides straight down following the chalk line she drew. She buys white chalk at dollar stores and it washes out great.

I do the same but layer batting on bottom first then back then front on top. I can now see where to sew after pinning all together. Before sewing I cut the back and batting even with the front. I also sometimes leave out the batting and use minky or similar fleece back. Then with turning right side out I sew around the design to quilt the two pieces together to hold it's shape. With the 3 layer ones I also quilt around the designs on the front but use more stitches closer together. So there is sewing about 4 to 5 inches apart. Example-- around the rainbow and unicorn for the 2 layer ones, and around each color of the rainbow and all the clouds,ECT. for the batting ones.

If you will have the opening on the side where the selvedge was because it doesn't stretch as much, so it will be easier to close the opening without any puckers.

@aprilscraftroom
@aprilscraftroom 3 года назад
I am always afraid the mark might come back if the quilt gets cold. Have you had any experience with that? Is there a certain brand of friction pens or is friction the brand? Thank you for watching. 😀 April
@ayakacrane8569
@ayakacrane8569 3 года назад
@@aprilscraftroom i use the Frixion pens on the light to medium colored fabrics. They don't come back when cold. I also used the same pens on paper before and it only came back really faded in the freezer. You may not want to use it with dark fabrics as the marks show up as white/gray when ironed/heated up.

Nooo! I love that she carries a Jimi Hendrix blanket. Don’t get me wrong. I love the quilts as well, but girls can be anything and shouldn’t be limited to “girly” things, and boys should be able to have anything they want as well. I think unicorns and rainbows are universally loved by all kids at some point. 💜Loved the tutorial and reminder to “just get it done”.
@freddab.7110
@freddab.7110 3 года назад
Thank you! I never understood why girls and boys need to color coded and are only allowed specific colours. Aren‘t colours for all kids? Why do we have to limit children so much? Even to a point where they get bullied just because they love a colour or things that „do not match their gender“.
@aprilscraftroom
@aprilscraftroom 3 года назад
You are right! I can't believe that I fell into the gender specific thing. I think girls can carry what ever they want and boys too. Except for my granddaughter carrying Jimi Hendrix - I think she needs to be a little older before she carries it. Everybody else can carry what ever they want. I'm just kidding. Funny enough my granddaughter turns her nose up at blue and green and says they are boy colors. And i responded with girls can carry anything. I"m such a hypocrite. Thank you for watching. April
@aprilscraftroom
@aprilscraftroom 3 года назад
You are both right. I don't really think that there are certain colors boys or girls should carry. Although, I don't think my 5 year old granddaughter should carry a Jimi Hendrix blanket, but keep in mind I'm not a Jimi Hendrix fan and I'm one of 'those' grandparents. I would never promote limiting children and especially would not want any child subjected to bullying over a color choice. If my granddaughter chose the Jimi Hendrix blanket over the unicorn and rainbow one - I would be just fine with that. Thank you for watching. April

I'm a bigger cheater! I get a yard and a half of 42 inch wide fabric and lay it right side out on top of a piece of fleece that is two inches wider and longer than the fabric all the way around. The fleece is folded to the front and it becomes the binding. I like to use a zigzag stitch to tack it all down. Sometimes, I hand knot the fabric to the fleece or machine stitch diagonally across the whole thing. Perfect little lap quilts to carry around from porch to car.

And I bet it is super soft and the perfect size! Love that idea. Thank you for sharing that great idea. :-). And it would be good to practice free motion quilting on too. April
