Saw this pattern on Etsy and passed on it. It seemed intimidating as an almost complete beginner (i have only made a single tote-style bag before). However, i might be willing to try it now with this tutorial to help me out!
I love it. Made one in Spider-Man fabric for my 4 year old grandson today. Unhappy about the pattern not giving pattern piece or measurements for drawstrings, drawstring casing. Or bottom tabs. Thanks to you I managed. Turned out wonderful! Thank You!!
Thanks Judy! Yes, I'll usually print the pieces out and then measure them for future reference. Measurements are always helpful for rectangular pieces.
I just love all of your videos. The fabric is amazing. I’m confused by how to purchase fabrics on those Facebook links. Can you do a tutorial on how we can get those fabrics that you use?
You have to join the groups and they hold pre-orders on fabrics. Sometimes they have retail but it sells out almost instantly so fast fingers is the key. Most groups don’t cap their pre-order rounds so you can take your time choosing what you want but some do and the caps are met pretty quickly :) hope that helps 💜
You should donate to her patreon or her RU-vid channel. She has a whole video on custom fabrics and goes into it quite a bit. I think people found it very helpful :)
Another awesome tutorial Because I don’t have access to some of the products you use I can’t make a lot of your bags But .. this one I am going to make Thank you 😊
Lovely backpack, but I liked it when you added the dimensions needed for each piece in your video instead of having to go to a different location for the pattern. Just feedback. I enjoy your videos.
Question: if you use cord and kids put their stuff in it and became heavy their shoulders gonna hurt ,so I thought of replacing the cord with belt how can I attach it? Hope you understand what I am saying. Thank you./
Just found your channel and im impressed ! The quality, clarity and attention to detail are amazing !! You have reignited my love of sewing ! Thank you !
I Love this video. Thanks for sharing it. I do have one Question or request. I finally tried the zipper tape for the first time, is there an easy way to attach the zipper pull? I did look on You Tube and one person, clips one of the ends, and I thought that was more difficult. If you could post a video on how you do it, that would be great. I guess the more you do it the better you become.
Thank you very much for doing a video tutorial for this Merida Drawstring Backpack; I remembered I purchased the pattern maybe 2 years ago from I Think Sew; I hadn't had time to really study the pattern to figure it out; this part doesn't come so easy for me since I'm such a visual learner. I'm so glad I found your RU-vid channel. You make learning fun for me. This will be great Christmas gifts for my husband's cousins' kids.
Hi Jessica!!! Love your tutorials. I ordered fabric from Backstitchers...first time ordering and ordered incorrectly. Planned on making 5 blankets for my grandkids...should have ordered adult panels but ordered kid panels...going to make the best of this situation...this tutorial saved me. Since i have 3 separate items on each panel i am using 2 of those pieces for this bag. Would water proof canvas work for lining & bottom? Also taking the last of the panels.. (which I have 5 of each kids panels) to use for my 3 girls and making the bonnie bucket back pack..i think everyone is going to love Christmas presents this year. TY in anvance
Thanks so much! My boyfriend is going back to college for the first time in a few years, so I made him a school bag using this tutorial! It turned out a lot better than I imagined lol. I appreciate your straightforward way of explaining things ^_^
Hi love this video I need to really pad it up to handle my husbands small camera. Can I add regular piece of 4 inch to top of the quilted bottom half to make the channel for drawstring. He never adks me to make him anything . T u
Jess, what model is your Juki sewing machine do you have and where can i purchase one. Thank You....Sorry, i watched a video you used the Juki and i am new at sewing and need a machine before i can make this real cute pull string bag. Thank You
I had such a terrible shift at work yesterday (I’m a nurse) that I was so pooped I couldn’t watch this last night. I’ve just watched it and it’s adorable. I’ve been making a very popular drawstring bag from another designer and I have to say that I prefer this one as it looks super quick to make. The pocket on the front is adorbs and as you said a great way to show off some cute fabric. Thanks for brightening up my day with your tutorial XXX
Is there a way, or some trick, to getting the lining and exterior to line up right cause my exterior is always a bit bigger and there's nowhere for the excess fabric to go when I sew the exterior to the lining.
If you buy the pattern, you will get the measurements and pattern pieces. Jess doesn’t give out measurements because it wouldn’t be fair to the designer. Hope that helps explain.
I love all types of bags. I’ve been wanting to learn how to make bags and I’m happy to have found you. You are a great instructor and take the time to explain in detail everything. That’s greatly appreciated. I’m buying and reselling items to buy my sewing machine and fabrics. Also want to start a small business selling mini backpacks. Thank you for the motivation💜
So my machine has a tendency to eat thinner fabric, so I run a scrap piece of fabric first to hold the thread taught and prevent any problems with my project.
Thanks for another great tutorial. I love your fabric choice, was just wondering what size you would cut your paracord to if you were making for a child or would you still keep the same length?
Jess OklaRoots I know, but you have the cutest fabrics! I’m still trying to figure out how Hapa and Backstitch work! I need to get my hands on Animal Crossing “shtuff!” Lol!
Hello. I absolutely LOVED this video. Thank you SO much. I attempted to join the FB group via the link you provided for the beautiful fabric so that I could purchase the fabric; however the administrator "declined/refused" my invitation to join. I answered all if the questions appropriately and there was no explanation given for being declined. So I will be using fabric from other available sources, but i am excited to make this! ❤
Hello Jessica, I ordered this pattern from ithinksew but am unable to access it. I've tried contacting the company but no response. Do you have a way of contacting it?
I have a question...what kind of printer do you use to print off your templates? I need to get a new printer and want one that I can use for my sewing projects as well as work stuff. Love your channel, btw....And that you are a fellow Oklahoma gal.
Haha😂 you know you’ve been sewing too long with Jess when you find yourself singing her little sewing music track when you’re not even at the machine !
my fabric be here tomorrow i can make my grandson 1 but maybe u can help me out printed off the directions, 2 pattern sets ? what is A4 paper size pattern ? ty
I'm confused. How do you print and which one to use? I have printed both and nothing seems right. 1" square is correct but the 3" lines do not make 3" and one runs off the cut line on the exterior and lining pattern. Fustrated and only on step 1 first cut.
Oh my gosh, I adore this fabric and your fantastic explanation on every part of it but especially the front pocket, here in the uk we’re always the last to have these sorts of fabrics 🥰
So Inked Papers is fantastic with this. I'm in the same boat currently. You can just message them your designs and they can give you size suggestions. I have some labels that are 1.25"x1.25" and some that are 1.25" x 2"
I enjoy all your videos! You are such a good instructor and such a precise sewist! Question, if you had your choice of any serger, which one would it be? Roz Pittsburgh, PA
I am going to make this one using fabric ties. Perhaps making the draw string just a little shorter. Great idea that can also double for project bags for sewing class. I like your idea to for organization in packing.
This is ADORABLE! Quick question, when using cork on bags, do you have to interface the cork? I just bought some cork from Sallie Tomato and it's a lot thinner than I expected. I will add this to my list of projects. BTW the music in this video is sooooo cute!
Wow! I have never heard of increasing the seam allowance on the lining so that the resulting lining doesn’t sag too much. Awesome! And also, where did you learn that trick.....the other awesome trick is clipping the corners a second time for getting a crisp point on the outside of the bag corners after turning! Any more unique tips you can share with us? Thank you for the superb tutorials. Pointe Vedra isn’t far from me here in Saint Marys GA where the Kings Bay Submarine Base is located .....
Recently saw a great tip. Maybe you’ve tried it. Where you’ve marked 3/8 “ on pocket instead of using marking pen, use a Hera marker on wrong side and it makes it fold over super easy when you go to press it. Haven’t tried it yet but saw it done. Thanks for another super video!
You added an interior pocket you could have used the interior pocket to close the lining and then close the interior pocket and that seemed would have been hidden inside of the pocket. A lot of bag makers leave an interior pocket open and also a section of the lining to birth the bag through. Then, they closed the lining through the interior pocket then stuff it all back through and close up that pocket so that the lining looks perfect and the only seen does it matter because it's on the inside of a pocket. Just an idea in case you begin selling these and you want to take them up just a little bit more
