Now I know what's for dinner tomorrow. Edit: Came back after 7 years to add that this has now been dinner in my household since I made my first comment.
@@rax816 I am a bean-based life form now (soup is simmering as I type). A lot of Chef John's recipes are now staples. I recommend this and corn pudding to bring to potlucks and gatherings.
I look forward to these videos ALL the time. I am an aspiring chef who is currently 18 years old and all i do is cook. I love it more than anything. I wake up In the morning and think all day at school what I am going to make for dinner that might for my family. Often these videos are what we end up making for dinner. And by the way Chef John, your spinach artichoke dip is the bomb!
thank you, chef, i can't express how much i love your channel and how much you've been a joy to watch through the years. Lots of love, a viewer from Kuwait.
I watched this video last night and ran out and bought the few things I needed and made it. Absolutely delicious; the whole family loved it! Thanks for another great staple recipe!
Delicious Chef John!! I make the same soup but I use slow cooked smoked ham hocks and when the meat falls off the bones i use that instead of bacon!! good variety!! Kudos to you chef!!
Hi Chef John! We've been making this for the last few months.. this is the BEST recipe and super easy!! The only difference we do us we add a LOT more cilantro and stock instead of broth, and skip the cayenne, double the cumin. My husband has mastered this dish, and since it's one of my favorites, I win!! THANK YOU for your video's!!
Guess what Chef John, I made your cauliflower soup with the bacon, just like you did and it was AMAZING. Love it, Love it. Thanks. I am always looking at your recipes and making them. Stay healthy and THANKS A MILLION FOR ALL YOU DO FOR US🌹🌹🌹
This sounds and looks great! And I want to make it exactly like Chef John down to the relish. I knew I bought those 4 cans of black beans from Walmart great value for a reason.
Had a can of black beans in the pantry that I couldn't remember why I bought and didn't know how to use so I did a search on your site and there it was! Did this for lunch today and it was great! Thanks. I'll be buying more cans of black beans.
Third time making this soup, but I tripled it this time. Used only 9 slices of local smoked bacon (very flavorful but not too fatty) and still removed ~4T of bacon grease before adding the onions. We always use Mexican oregano (if you can find it- it's really fantastic!). Using a spider, I removed about 1/2 beans/bacon/veg and then immersion blended the soup in the pot before adding the reserved mix back in to finish simmering. We prefer a mix of chicken & vegetable broth, very little water unless it simmers down too much. This batch was made pretty much as written, until the very end (of course): We added a splash of cider vin for the final stir. About half was packed up for the week's food prep lunches. ALWAYS a flavorful and healthy soup! We use a variety of garnishes- roasted elote-style corn is my fave. If you don't like bacon... Make something else ;)
Used this recipe to base mine on last night. So good I can't let it go today. So cold here that it is all I can think about. I only ate half as eating two cans of bean seemed like a bad plan. Hard not to keep eating it. Even the cat and dog were salivating. I don't eat bacon much for my personal health issues, but added a ham seasoning flavor packet. Awesome!
I used to have a delicious black bean soup at Grundy's @ Berkeley, CA waterfront and they garnished black bean soup with chopped boiled egg and a lemon slice. It was a delicious 1st course with the rustic bread served before the main course of Chicken Kiev. Delicious! Good memory.
I watched this when you first posted it and I seriously make this constantly. I like the bacon, but I leave it out a lot to save on fat. However, topping this with reduced fat bacon bits is amazing. I seriously stock up on black beans because of this soup! So yummy. Thanks Chef John!
Mmm sounds good I love beans so comforting with hot buttermilk cornbread I don’t eat pork I would add maybe bison or beef thank you I enjoy so much your videos thanks for sharing the love with the world ✨💕🤗☀️🙏
Noticed a bag of Black Beans in the pantry. Soaked overnight I gave them a rinse, course chopped 1 1/2 large yellow onions, black pepper, oregano, cumin, red pepper flakes, 2 tps ea chicken & vegetable BTB Seasoning base, good shaka shaka garlic powder & 1 fire roasted dried poblano pepper. Cooked above for 45 min while shoveling snow, used immersion blender to thicken soup, blop of sour cream and I had a wonderful no meat meal. Oh, 1 bunch of green onions, whites at beginning, greens at end. Sweetness from onions was perfect.
hi , I hope you are well. I made beans I did not have much to work with. Some spices . I put calantro in it, I put dry dill I bought fresh and dry and crushed it, It came out really swell . Both those things can be used in fish chowder and I would love it. happy holidays
This video not only boasts a yummy black bean soup that I love and about to make again....but it Al's feast urges in my opinion the funniest chef on RU-vid!!
Gotta try this one. Your instruction vid on French omelet changed my life! Peeps love my omelets. They had no idea eggs aren't rubber fodder. And as always; ENJOY!!
My favorite black bean soup is the one I make at Thanksgiving. I smoke turkeys in my smoker, and make smoked turkey stock after we eat the meat off the bird. Smoked turkey black bean soup is the best ever.
I once was poaching some eggs and had a brain fart and tossed my slotted spoon into a sink with a small mountain of dirty dishes in it. I grabbed the wooden spoon with a hole in it to fish out my eggs. It worked. That's really the only time I ever used it for a specific task. I do want to thank you for clearing up my concerns about bringing food to a potluck where vegetarians/vegans might show up. It's kinda been a worsening problem lately but thanks to your intelligent guidance I think that I will now have a lot of options that I had given up.
I just cooked this (as I wasn't going to go food shopping at 10pm at night) and this was absolutely delicious! Goes great with bread on the side for a light dinner! Thanks, Chef John! :)
So we've been chillin' down here in Florida at currently 63 degrees - brrr! lol I thought today would be a great day to make this soup and it was dee- lish!! Thank you Chef John!:)
This is one of the best black bean soup recipes I've ever come across. All the other posts seem to be between 3 and 11 years old, are you still alive? Brilliant answer BTW: re the hole-in-the-spoon thing. Very clever to post the answer down in the comments like you were one of the huddled masses I would have never figured that out.
The hole in the wooden spoon allows stirring from the bottom or middle of the without splashing your dish. The hole can also be used to measure spaghetti portions.
The spoon with a hole in it is used here in Switzerland for stirring cheese fondue. For some reason it is supposed to stir the cheese mixture better. As far as I know we don't use it for anything else.
Old video, but HAD to watch it having learned a similar lesson from a co worker.. The big difference is fresh jalapeno while its cooking! Adds a nice little hit.
@JimHalpertful The hole in the spoon obviously makes it less air resistant, which brings it up to par for Chef John's super-speedy-soup-stirring-prowess. Woooooooossssshhhhh-
